- DANFS entry for this hull, verbatim: 'LST-884 was laid down on 23 July 1944 at Pittsburgh, Pa., by the Dravo Corp.; launched on 30 September 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Michael Durkin; and commissioned on 10 October 1944. During World War II, LST-884 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the assault and occupation of Iwo Jima in February 1945 and the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto in April 1945. She was decommissioned on 16 February 1946. Due to extensive damage resulting from a kamikaze attack on 1 April 1945, LST-884's hulk was sunk on 6 May 1946. The ship was struck from the Navy list on 21 May 1946. LST-884 earned two battle stars for World War II service.'

- Limitations
- Volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track DANFS but its 15 February 1946 decommissioning conflicts with DANFS's 16 February (DANFS carried; see gaps). One photo-gallery header misdates the kamikaze attack '1 April 1944' - a typo; the attack was 1 April 1945 per every other source. Contains no asbestos content; the salvage-photo captions document physical work on the burned hull, not materials.

- Finding
- Official USCG war history's ship-specific narrative: at about 0548 on 1 April 1945 three planes approached the Coast Guard-manned LST-884 (TG 51.8, off Okinawa); port guns opened fire; one plane crashed the port side 'plunging through the ship fitter's shop, and into the tank deck, where it exploded with intense flame,' detonating stowed 81 mm and 60 mm mortar ammunition; fire reached the main engine room and heavy acrid smoke forced the watches out; abandon ship ordered 0555, completed by ~0610; the CO and volunteers re-boarded from 0731 with four LCSs alongside; fire under control 1100 with tank deck and both engine rooms flooded; USS Yuma (AT-94) towed her to Kerama Retto anchorage arriving 1838; eleven days of cleaning and salvage welded a 20-foot port-side hole and the open tank deck shut; 'On the 14th, the LST was underway for Guam in tow of LST-940.' Twenty bodies were buried - all but one believed Marines, most taken from the tank deck; one member of the ship's company killed and one wounded.

- Limitations
- Published official service history (post-war monograph) - a secondary synthesis of the ship's own reports, but the authoritative published narrative for this hull's loss. Documents fire and flooding through interior spaces and an eleven-day salvage period aboard the burned hull - relevant context for material-disturbance questions, but it names no materials and contains no asbestos content. Not an exposure record.

- The ship's own after-action report documents: LST-884 assigned to the Iwo Jima defense group replacing the aground LST-766; at Navy Yard, Pearl Harbor 22 January 1945 preparing for receipt of an LCT and 3x12 pontoons; cargo (heavy grading and roadbuilding equipment) plus a C.B. and bomb-disposal detachment of 8 officers and 222 men transferred from LST-766 at Maui by APD; departed Pearl Harbor 24 January; Eniwetok 6 February; discharged four self-propelled pontoon barges at Apra Harbor, Guam 13 February; departed Guam 16 February; off Iwo Jima 20 February. On 21 February five Zeke suicide aircraft attacked TG 51.5 - LST-477 and section guide Keokuk were hit and burned; a Zeke attempting to crash-dive LST-884 was shot down by LST-809's fire before reaching her ('The accurate fire of LST 809 undoubtedly saved this vessel from serious damage or loss'). Beached Green Beach night of 24-25 February, unloaded under sporadic mortar fire; on 27 February a 75 mm shell pierced compartment C-417-W at the waterline and exploded inside, and a mortar round hit the port side amidships; starboard shaft binding forced the starboard engine secured; departed the objective for Saipan 28 February on the port engine as formation guide. 1,154 rounds of 40 mm and 20 mm AA fired without stoppage; battle damage assessed 'slight.'

They killed 1 enlisted man and then escaped'; the Part (V) Section (K) repair-work table records 'LST 884 | 4/1/45 | Suicide plane | Eng. rooms flooded. Tank decks flooded. - Finding
- The sunken hull survives and was ROV-surveyed by the federal government: on 21 March 2025 NOAA Ocean Exploration's EX2502 shakedown expedition (NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer, Honolulu-Honolulu, 17-27 March 2025) dove 'LST-884 (UCH)' in the Hawaiian Islands with ROV Deep Discoverer and camera platform Seirios - maximum depth 625.5 m, minimum seafloor depth 609.8 m, bottom time 5:27:51, distance travelled 87.2 m. The dive summary records 'Maritime Heritage Restrictions: Yes,' that the wreck had to be located in multibeam backscatter because provided coordinates were slightly offset, and 'No samples were collected due to the restricted location.' Observations: front landing doors open, port door completely detached, slight buckling of the port hull 'perhaps from sinking event,' and painted markings of two Japanese flags and a plane still observable on the bridge's starboard exterior 'representing the vessel's wartime accomplishments.'

- Finding
- Era/design inference for a diesel-powered LST built in 1944: no boilers aboard, so the steam-plant lagging pathway does not apply; era-standard asbestos-relevant applications for the type are GM diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. The class profile notes that the LST program's diesel plant narrows the steam-lagging pathway and concentrates exposure relevance in engine-room/exhaust lagging, gaskets, deck coverings, and accommodation insulation.

Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantities; establishes no exposure for any individual. The class profile's underlying BuShips SDB 1945 v2 citation (shipscribe.com scan) returned 404 this session - noted in the batch report as source decay; the inference stands on NavSource's verified spec block plus the class synthesis.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or verified litigation naming USS LST-884 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated helper reported the fleet-shared daily quota exhausted (~8.5 h to reset); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard LSTs' material is law-firm marketing content (gorilaw.com landing-ships page; navyshipexposure.com LST class page) asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.
