- Lines headed ‘542-Class Tank Landing Ship,’ service chronology, final disposition, and specifications; page verified live 2026-10-03
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource identifies USS LST-917 as an LST-542-class tank landing ship, laid down 31 March 1944 at Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard in Hingham, Massachusetts, launched 6 May 1944, and commissioned 28 May 1944. It lists two General Motors 12-567A diesel engines. NavSource reports WWII service in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, including Leyte, Morotai, Lingayen Gulf, Mindanao, and Okinawa; occupation and China service after the war; decommissioning on 24 May 1946; striking on 3 July 1946; and sale to Kaiser Co. for scrapping in Vancouver, Washington, on 19 May 1948.

- Ship crew; WWII and postwar service
- Limitations
- NavSource is a secondary naval-history archive reproducing DANFS history and ship-reference material, not the original commissioning, machinery, or disposition records. Its page supports the stated chronology but does not establish asbestos content, individual exposure, causation, or present-day material condition. The diesel-engine specification is not independently confirmed by a primary machinery record.

- Special List #44, p. 59, LST-917 entries; NARA deck-log guide, sections ‘An Introduction to Navy Deck Logs’ and ‘1941-1959 Deck Logs’ at https://www.archives.gov/research/military/logbooks/naval-deck-logs
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The National Archives’ Special List 44, by ship number, lists Navy deck logs for LST-917 from 28 May 1944 through 30 June 1945. The National Archives explains that its ship-number list identifies surviving deck-log date coverage; the underlying logs were not retrieved or reviewed for this record.

- Limitations
- This is a finding aid/date-range listing, not the deck logs themselves. It establishes an archival lead and coverage dates only; no movements, incidents, exposure, or asbestos findings are asserted from the unreviewed logs.

- ‘1920-1950’ section, lines discussing World War II and U.S. Navy asbestos use for pipe insulation; page verified live 2026-10-03
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A CDC/NIOSH historical overview states that U.S. Navy use of asbestos increased during World War II for insulation of pipes in naval vessels and describes contemporaneous Navy precautions for pipe-covering work. This is Navy-wide WWII context only; the source does not name LST-917 or establish that asbestos was installed aboard it.

- Population
- U.S. Navy shipboard pipe-covering work during World War II
- Limitations
- The overview describes Navy-wide WWII practice and does not name this hull, its class, builder, or any LST. It cannot establish asbestos aboard LST-917, a particular product or location, quantity, present condition, individual exposure, or causation. No ship-specific inference is made from diesel propulsion or construction date.

[5]Batch 7460 source review and authenticated CourtListener helper outputs for USS LST-917 [other_primary]
- Locator
- Search-ledger entries sl-uss-lst-917-lst917-01 through sl-uss-lst-917-lst917-08
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or other asbestos document naming LST-917 was identified in the public sources reviewed for this batch. The authenticated CourtListener exact-name and hull-number litigation sweep was not completed: no response payload was obtained for the exact-name query, and the exact-hull query was blocked by the daily quota. The litigation result therefore remains unknown; the blocked search is not a no-result finding. Direct review of the underlying NARA deck logs was also not completed.

- Limitations
- This is a bounded negative finding about sources actually reviewed, not proof that asbestos was absent aboard the ship or that no relevant record exists. CourtListener access was blocked by pacing and daily quota; its litigation result remains unknown and cannot be called a no result. NARA deck-log coverage was identified but the logs were not examined. It does not resolve exposure, causation, or legal eligibility.
