- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS states that LST-918 was laid down on 5 April 1944 at Hingham, Massachusetts, by Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard, Inc.; launched on 7 May 1944; and commissioned on 29 May 1944 under Lt. Paul Cherin, USNR. It served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the Leyte landings in October 1944 and the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto from March through June 1945. After the war it performed occupation duty in the Far East until early January 1946; was decommissioned on 12 June 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 31 July 1946; and was sold on 18 December 1947 to The Learner Co., Oakland, California, and subsequently scrapped. DANFS states that LST-918 earned two battle stars for World War II service.

- Limitations
- Ship-specific official history, not an asbestos or materials record. The live NHHC page returned HTTP 404 when checked on 3 October 2026; the archived capture is cited and labeled. DANFS does not give a complement, exact scrapping date, or scrapping location.

[3]U.S. General Accounting Office, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (18 October 1979; official report PDF) [gao]

- Report, introductory summary and 'Navy's Policy on Use of Asbestos' discussion
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO reported Navy-wide information about asbestos use in Navy ships and quoted Navy officials as saying that ships contained asbestos in components including clutches and electric cables, while thermal insulation was the Navy's major asbestos use aboard ships. This is Navy-wide program context and does not identify LST-918 or establish any material aboard it.

- 1979 review of Navy asbestos program and policy
- Population
- Navy ships and Navy shipyard workers generally
- Limitations
- Context only. GAO reviewed Navy ship asbestos use and shipyard worker protections; the finding is not a vessel survey and supplies no hull-specific material, quantity, condition, work history, or individual exposure evidence. GAO's direct product-page URL returned HTTP 403 to this session; the official report PDF and indexed official report text were available through web research.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's ship-number list includes LST-918 deck-log coverage from 29 May 1944 through 30 June 1945, providing an archival lead for the ship's commissioning and wartime period.

- USS LST-918 deck-log records
- Limitations
- This is a finding aid documenting listed log coverage, not the deck logs themselves. The listed logs were not reviewed for asbestos, maintenance, or exposure information; the finding aid does not establish the content of any log entry.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or materials schedule for USS LST-918 was located in the public sources reviewed. CourtListener litigation status remains unknown: the exact-name opinion query was stopped by the authenticated helper's fleet pacing limiter before HTTP transmission; the exact-hull opinion query received HTTP 429 with a multi-hour wait and returned no results. No docket search was made after the 429.

- Sources reviewed through 2026-10-03
- Limitations
- A failure to locate a public record does not establish that asbestos was absent. The archived DANFS page, NARA finding aid, and GAO report do not provide hull-specific asbestos documentation; the NARA deck logs listed for this hull were not reviewed. CourtListener supplied no results, and the docket searches were not run after its 429 response. No inference about exposure or legal eligibility is made.
