- Documented for this hull (verbatim): 'LST-926 was laid down on 13 May 1944 at Hingham, Mass., by the Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard, Inc.; launched on 24 June 1944; and commissioned on 20 July 1944, Lt. Floyd H. Gould in command. During World War II, LST-926 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the Lingayen Gulf landing in January 1945 and the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto from April through June 1945. Following the war, she performed occupation duty in the Far East until late March 1946. The ship was decommissioned on 14 June 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 31 July that same year. On 13 June 1948, the tank landing ship was sold to the Walter W. Johnson Co. for scrapping. LST-926 earned two battle stars for World War II service.'

- Finding
- Yard-table row for this hull: yard number 3396, type LST, number 926, FY 1943, keel laid 13-May-44, launched 24-Jun-44, delivered 20-Jul-44 - 42 days on the ways, 26 days fitting out in the water, 68 total days; disposition column reads 'Scrapped 1947'. Yard context: Bethlehem Hingham Shipyards, Inc. was built in 1941 for destroyer-escort construction with $35 million from the Navy; 16 building ways; managed by Bethlehem's Quincy (Fore River) operation; peak employment over 23,000; closed and liquidated after the war.

- Bethlehem-Hingham workforce (peak >23,000 yard-wide, 1941-45); this hull's build crew (May-Jul 1944)
- Limitations
- Colton's table is a respected secondary compilation built from official records - not itself a primary document. Its 'Scrapped 1947' disposition conflicts with the DANFS-documented 13 June 1948 sale date and is repeated identically across many table rows, suggesting an approximate/default value; DANFS date carried (see gaps). Yard-employment peak is a yard-level figure covering DE construction, not this hull's build crew specifically.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Ship-specific primary document (read from the imaged original): the casualty dispatch lists 'ATTACHED TO USS LST 926 - 20- LEHRER, Gabriel, Ens, USNR, 381648, Critically Injured' among 20 casualties 'as a result of fire and explosion of ammunition 2 January 1946' at Gushikawa, Chimu Wan, Okinawa (CASFORMTEL references; Log 41957-N-0, 41901-A-20). Companion Finding of Facts: landing craft beached west-to-east were LST-355, LST-920, LST-783, LCT-1414, LCT-560, LCT-891, LCT-785; LCT-560 had loaded ammunition and pyrotechnics for dumping at sea; fire broke out ~1620 in the after section of the load and spread to an explosion ~1632; fire of indeterminate origin, most probable cause a defective smoke pot; deaths and injuries incurred in the line of duty, not misconduct. LST-926 is NOT among the beached hulls - her attached officer was a casualty at the scene, consistent with her documented Okinawa occupation-duty window (20 Oct 1945 - 26 Mar 1946).

- Secondary-source historical note for this hull: on 15 August 1945 Vice-Admiral Matome Ugaki led a final kamikaze mission of ten D4Y aircraft from Oita Airfield against U.S. ships off Okinawa after the surrender announcement; his plane transmitted a last message at 7:24 pm and did not return. Per the source, 'The next day, the wreckage of an aircraft with three bodies inside was located by the crew of LST-926... The Americans buried the bodies on the beach. Likely, this was the wreckage of Ugaki's aircraft and his remains. All the other aircraft on the mission had only had two crew members.'

- Finding
- A diesel-powered LST built May-July 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a ship of this type and period were GM diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings in a hull worked by ~117-man ship's company plus embarked troops. The diesel plant means no boiler/turbine lagging pathway - the exposure-relevant systems are engine-room and accommodation, not a steam plant.

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s; standing policy (1975) removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or required for repairs, modified 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas. This hull's entire construction and service era (1944-46) plus her 1948 scrapping precede that policy regime.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LST-926 was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated helper reported the fleet-shared daily quota exhausted (~28,027 s / ~7.8 h to reset) and enforced stand-down; logged as blocked, not a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no law-firm listicle content for this hull (unusually clean result). The 1948 sale-for-scraping predates ACM-handling regulation; no scrapping-contract or hazmat record located for the Walter W. Johnson Co. breakup.

- DISAMBIGUATION: a second, unrelated hull carried the number 926. Ex-USS LST-1008 (Bethlehem Quincy-built, Normandy veteran) was transferred to the Republic of China Navy 1946, seized by PLA forces 1950, and served in the PLAN as Dabie Shan with pennant number LST-502 then LST-926 - displayed as a museum ship at the Qingdao Naval Museum 1999/2000-2005 and scrapped ~2005-2007. That hull is NOT USS LST-926 (Bethlehem-Hingham 3396), which was sold for scrapping 13 June 1948. Litigation, photo, and museum references to 'LST-926' post-1950 typically concern the PLAN ship.
