NavSource is a volunteer photographic-archive compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates here agree with DANFS and the CO table is consistent with the war diaries' signature blocks. Contains no asbestos content. The 'H markings' caption observation is significant - it places the hospital-function marking on this hull at Iwo Jima in February 1945, seven months before the formal 15 September 1945 LST(H) redesignation.

The ship's own Iwo Jima action report (downloaded via IIIF and OCR-read in full this session) documents a three-fold mission for this hull at the assault: 'it was to function as the Casualty Evacuation Control Ship for Red Beaches' and 'to transport, operate and land when directed, personnel and equipment of the Mobile Blood Bank' - including 61 cases of whole blood with refrigeration gear ('Blood was stowed in reefer boxes, top side on the main deck'), plus LVT(A)/LVT launch of Marine assault troops of BLT 1/27 (annex lists 14 Marine officers and 319 enlisted embarked 21 Jan-12 Feb 1945). D-day 19 Feb: bow doors opened 0733; 'Lowered both LCVP's into water for use as ambulance boats'; launched 50-ton pontoon barge 'to be retained alongside to port as a working platform for casualty evacuation'; took station 300 yards to seaward of Red Beach control vessel; '0941 - Commenced receiving casualties alongside.' 20 Feb: three additional medical officers received from USS Lenawee; port propeller fouled by pontoon-barge wire cable; towed by ATR-51. 21-22 Feb: salvage diving party from ATR-33 with underwater cutting torch cleared the port propeller. 23 Feb: commenced firing on enemy aircraft (40 MM and 20 MM expended); attempted casualty transfer to USS Hocking. 27 Feb: beached on Black Beach to land Mobile Blood Bank personnel and equipment. Departed 28 Feb in Task Unit 51.16.9; arrived Saipan 5 March 1945.

    Finding
The August 1945 war diary (downloaded via IIIF and OCR-read in full) is already styled 'UNITED STATES SHIP L.S.T. (H) 929' on its cover page and 'U.S.S. LST (H) 929' on the letterhead - the crew was using the hospital designation in a diary submitted 2 September 1945, thirteen days before the formal 15 September 1945 LST(H) redesignation in DANFS. Content: underway 1 August from Subic Bay to Okinawa in Task Unit 72.10.6 (ComLSTGrp 17 movement order), towing U.S. Army-manned emergency rescue boat P-363 (tow parted and regained in typhoon-proximity seas); Hagushi/Naha Ko operations under repeated 'Flash Red' air-raid alerts with smoke-making and condition watches; discharged 90th Bombardment Squadron personnel (13 officers, 182 enlisted, one civilian technician) at Purple beach causeways 6-7 August; embarked 531st Field Artillery Battalion (7 officers, 112 enlisted); convoy OKI #12 to Leyte 10-15 August (escorts USS Lovelace, USS Edmonds; depth-charge incident 11 Aug); watered 40,808 gallons at Balauaan Bay 17 Aug; served as OTC for LSTs 230/886/479 to Batangas Bay, beaching at Talaga 22 Aug (reconnaissance by Lt(jg) Michael Francis Mathew Tarker); returned to Leyte; CO requested availability for 'a serious vibration ... in the port propeller shaft possibly caused by a bent tail section, or a badly worn and pitted bearing' - availability denied, ordered to prepare for sea; ended month in a 29-LST lift to Lemery, Balayan Bay. Enclosures include the Leyte-Batangas communication plan (serial 035) and the Talaga beaching report (serial 65).

    Finding
The October 1945 war diary (downloaded via IIIF and OCR-read in full) documents a ship-specific yard event: 'Dry docked in dock #4, Yokosuka Navy Yard, Yokosuka, Honshu, Japan' 1-3 October 1945 'to effect repairs from damages sustained during the tropical hurricane which affected ships of the Tokyo Bay area 17 and 18 September' - the bow anchor cable had parted at the twenty-fathom mark and the ship 'broach[ed] starboard side to a sea wall,' rippling deck and hull plating with 'several underwater punctures in ballast tanks,' weakened/bent frames, 'a possible bent tail shaft and damaged starboard propeller.' Commander Service Division 102 (Commodore J. T. Acuff in USS Argonne) 'assigned the USS Argonne to complete hull repairs and the USS Dyonisus for shaft repairs'; undocked 3 Oct, at-anchor availability through 4-7 Oct. The diary also documents the hospital function: the ship had been unloading 'Army troops and cargo of the 43rd Field Hospital and 29th Medical Supply Depot' at Yokohama when the typhoon struck; 'Twenty-one of the hospital corpsman, assigned this ship for duty in connection with hospital evacuation during operations, were transferred to Commander Fleet Activities, Yokosuka' 4 Oct; LCDR James W. Leatherman (MC) USNR detached to USS Delta 1 Oct. Then Tokyo Bay-Leyte convoy TU 32.6.16 (8-20 Oct, typhoon reversal 9-10 Oct); freight pickup at NSD Calicoan; water at Lauaan Bay (43,566 gal); fueling alongside SS Socony Vacuum (124,049 gal) and YO-60 lube oil (3,024 gal) 23 Oct; embarked elements of the 316th, 318th, and 906th Field Artillery Battalions at Rizal 26-27 Oct; departed Leyte 28 Oct in TU 34.9.15 (15 LSTs, escort USS Burrows) for Aomori, Honshu.

An LST-542-class diesel-powered tank landing ship built mid-1944 sits inside the era when insulating and gasket/packing materials aboard Navy auxiliaries and amphibious ships were commonly manufactured with asbestos fiber. With no steam plant, the boiler/turbine lagging pathway does not apply; era-consistent asbestos-relevant applications aboard a ship of this type and period were diesel engine and exhaust lagging, machinery thermal/acoustic insulation, gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. The documented 1-3 October 1945 Yokosuka Navy Yard drydocking for hull-plating and shaft repairs (war diary, ev-06) is a repair/renewal event aboard this hull inside that era; its material scope is unitemized.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (quota-blocked, not run). This hull has unusually complete operational documentation (casualty-evacuation flagship role at Iwo Jima, Yokosuka drydock repair), but no located record names asbestos aboard. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
