Documented for this hull (verbatim DANFS text): 'LST-982 was laid down on 22 December 1943 at the Boston Navy Yard; launched on 10 February 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Orrin R. Hewitt; and commissioned on 19 March 1944, Lt. (jg.) W. A. Breen, Jr., USNR, in command. During World War II, LST-982 was assigned to the European theater and participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944. Transferred to the Asiatic-Pacific theater, she engaged in the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto in May and June 1945. Following the war, she performed occupation duty in the Far East and saw service in China until mid-April 1946. The ship was decommissioned on 25 April 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 19 July 1946. On 5 December 1947, she was sold to Bosey, Philippines. LST-982 earned two battle stars for World War II service.'

NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates track DANFS where they overlap; the Flotilla 36 / Group 108 / Division 216 administrative listing is as-tabulated and contains a page typo ('USS LST-981' in the flotilla line). Crew photographs are personal-collection submissions - the 'high and dry on Omaha Beach November 1944' image is a crew member's photo, not an official Navy photo number. Contains no asbestos content.

    Limitations
Primary-source operational record - proves movements and one maintenance event (the 14-16 August 1945 ARD-15 drydocking at Saipan), not materials: the diary records the docking but not the work scope, so it cannot establish whether any insulation was disturbed. Administrative flotilla assignment differs from operational commanders named in the diaries (Flotilla 16, Group 92, CTU 11.5.6, Flot 23, Group 103) - NavSource's Flotilla 36/Group 108/Division 216 is the peacetime listing; no contradiction, task-organized commands differ. No asbestos content anywhere in the diaries.

    Finding
An official U.S. Army Air Forces photograph (76450AC) in NARA RG 342 documents this hull at Saipan, Marianas Islands: the NavSource-captioned description reads 'Personnel of the US Army Air Corps 805th Engineer Aviation Battalion unload equipment from the USS LST-982 for the construction of an airfield on Saipan, Marianas Islands, date unknown.' The ship's documented Saipan anchorages (13-23 June and 5-23 August 1945 per the war diaries) bracket the plausible window.

The NAID NavSource prints (193831547) returns no record in the current catalog; the correct record for photo number 76450AC is NAID 204975260 (verified via catalog search this session). Finding
A diesel-powered amphibious ship built December 1943 - March 1944 at a U.S. Navy yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a diesel LST of this type and period were GM diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, valve packing, deck coverings, and bulkhead/accommodation insulation; she carried no boilers, so the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. One documented maintenance window could have disturbed insulation-era materials: the ship's war diary records her docking in floating dry dock ARD-15 at Tanapag Harbor, Saipan, 14-16 August 1945 - documented as an event, with no asbestos scope documented.

    Finding
Government documentation of asbestos use in construction at this hull's builder yard during her build era: the NPS environmental assessment for the Charlestown Navy Yard (Boston Naval Shipyard, closed 1974) documents that Building 109 - 'constructed by the Navy in the 1940s' and 'built in three stages between 1940 and 1944' as a wartime temporary building - is 'a two-story, wood-frame building with light gray asbestos siding', shows 'cracked exterior asbestos shingles', is 'afflicted with structural issues and asbestos', and is slated for 'asbestos siding remediation'. The EA glosses ACM as 'Asbestos Containing Material'.

CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated API helper returned a daily-quota-exceeded response (server-requested wait ~6.5 h); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. CORRECTION/SOURCE-CONFLICT: secondary shipbuilding registries compress this hull's fate to 'scrapped 1947'. The authoritative record is narrower: DANFS says 'sold to Bosey, Philippines' on 5 December 1947 and NavSource adds 'fate unknown'. A sale to a Philippine commercial buyer (Bosey) is documented; whether she was in fact scrapped is not established by the 'scrapped 1947' shorthand and remains unresolved - 'fate unknown' is the honest status.
