    Finding
Ship-authored action report for this hull (serial 61-45, dated 30 October 1944, signed A. Lozica), enclosed as Enclosure (A) to Commander Task Group 78.11's report of the Leyte-to-Hollandia convoy operation 23-26 October 1944 (Comdr. T. C. Linthicum, USN, Comdr. LST Group 23, flagship USS LST-1018), plus the covering endorsement. The 986 report documents: participation in the Leyte invasion with TG 78.6 under CTF 78 OpPlan 101-44 - loaded equipment and embarked troops of the 339th Army Engineering Construction Battalion at Tanah Merah Bay, New Guinea, 12-13 October 1944; sortied Humboldt Bay 16 October; assigned to the Red Beach group; two unsuccessful beaching attempts 22 October (exceptionally shallow water, soft mud to 1,000 yards); third attempt 23 October failed; bow doors opened 500 yards offshore 0900 23 October and the beach party constructed a pontoon causeway to the ramp; unloaded 1100-1315 23 October; retracted 1400. Returning for Humboldt Bay in TG 78.11, at 2335 on 24 October at 08 deg 29 min N, 128 deg 29 min E, two explosions ahead in convoy; LST-695 flashed 'WE HAVE BEEN TORPEDOED AND ARE SINKING'; LST-986 - last ship in the extreme left column - went to her assistance, lowered boats to search for survivors, and at 0100 25 October took LST-695 in tow at ~4 knots with PC 598 screening and LST-170 following. LST-695 reported 15 dead, 3 missing, 20 injured; SOPA established aboard LST-986; buried-at-sea count reached 22; on LST-170's advice of critical casualties a fast-ship/plane request was made to Palau; at 1217 on 26 October course changed to 097 deg T for Palau; arrived Palau late forenoon 27 October; transferred 13 patients off LST-695 and 1 off LST-170; turned LST-695 over to a salvage tug under CTG 57.14 orders; sailed for Hollandia at 1815. CTG 78.11's endorsement: the CO of LST-986 'acted contrary to instructions in towing the vessel to Palau' and 'was lax in not making at least an attempt to carry out original orders to a place where repair facilities were available,' but 'towing into port the stricken vessel was a difficult job well executed' deserving 'high praise for the participants.'

    Finding
Ship-authored action report for this hull (serial 107-45, dated 27 January 1945, signed A. Lozica): in TG 78.9 resupply Echelon G-3 under Capt. Manees (USS LST-574) per CTG 78.9 OpOrder 3-44 and CTF 78 OpPlan 103-44, this ship alone comprised Group 38 of the echelon; left Leyte Gulf 8-9 January 1945 for Lingayen Gulf, Luzon. On 12 January ~1815 the convoy went to general quarters; four enemy aircraft attacked ~1830-1840 - one suicide-dived a Liberty ship astern (overshot and crashed astern of her), a second crashed a Liberty ship on the starboard quarter ~1,000 yards off (hits scored, ship set afire), a third dove on an LST at the rear but fell short, the fourth flew off. LST-986 expended 245 rounds of 40mm and 517 rounds of 20mm; no material failures. Arrived Lingayen Gulf early 13 January; beached 1800 19 January on Crimson Beach; discharged cargo and troops - personnel and equipment of the 71st Headquarters Tactical Reconnaissance Group and the 110th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron; sortied 1700 22 January with TU 78.11.10 under Capt. Thieme (LST-1015); arrived Leyte Gulf 27 January 1945.

Group report documents Unit Four of TU 53.3.3 (Tractor Group CHARLIE): 7 LSTs (739, 581, 672, 580, 628, 986, 564), 5 LSMs, 4 LCIs - departed Purvis Bay, Florida Island, 12 March 1945, staged at Ulithi, arrived Okinawa morning 1 April 1945. The 986 report documents: under CTF 53 orders beached Green Beach, Banika Island, Russell Islands, 4 March 1945 to load understowed ammunition; beached Pavuvu Island, Macquitti Bay, for the remainder of cargo and troops - elements of the Eleventh Marines and one Army amphibian truck unit; completed loading 7 March; logistics at Port Purvis; departed 12 March with the LST/LSM/LCI convoy under Capt. Watts (LCI 786), CTU 53.3.3; arrived Ulithi 21 March; departed for Okinawa 25 March; arrived morning 1 April; launched amphibious vehicles 1100-1130; stood off Yellow Beach Two until ~2000; received beaching instructions 1900 2 April; beached Yellow Beach Two at 2200 between LST-580 (port) and LST-739 (starboard); commenced unloading non-amphibious vehicles and bulk cargo 1400 3 April; completed unloading 1800 4 April; retracted 2300 as ordered in a freshening 25-knot southwesterly; moored at Kerama Retto; underway ~1715 6 April with an LST convoy for Leyte and Lingayen Gulf (moored 17 April); 22 April underway with other LSTs for return to the Panama Canal Zone for overhaul via Eniwetok and Pearl Harbor (arrived Eniwetok 5 May). MARAD ShipHistory record and digitized vessel status card for LST-986 (ShipHistory Detail 9584): database lists the hull as LST Tank Landing Ship, MARAD Type Military, fate 'Sold - No Further Info.' The status card records 'Surplus - Department of Navy'; operator/buyer Moore Dry Dock Company; form of agreement 'Pur.' The delivery date conflicts with DANFS/NavSource's printed sale date of 4 November 1948 - see gaps; sister hull LST-979 was sold to the same company 4 November 1947, consistent with a 1947 batch sale.

Era inference for this hull: the LST-542 design ran a diesel plant (2 x GM 12-567A diesels, 1,700 shp, Falk reduction gears, twin screws - BuShips SDB 1945 v2 design table and this hull's NavSource spec block) with no boilers, so the steam-plant lagging pathway of boiler vessels does not apply. Asbestos-relevant applications aboard an early-1944 diesel landing ship of this type were the era-standard set: diesel-exhaust and machinery-space lagging, gaskets and valve packing, accommodation thermal insulation, deck coverings, and winch/crane brake linings.

    Finding
Builder-yard asbestos documentation: the yard dataset records Boston Naval Shipyard (Charlestown Navy Yard; this hull's builder, January-April 1944) at evidence tier 3 with a WWII peak employment of 50,128 and a litigation-product row: In re John Crane, Inc., No. 01-03-00698-CV (Tex. App. 1st Dist. 2003) - a worker alleged exposure to John Crane gaskets and sealing materials at Boston Naval Shipyard.

    Limitations
Yard-level, not hull-level: documents asbestos-product litigation touching the builder's workforce environment, not this vessel. The case is a pleading/allegation-stage record of claimed exposure at the yard, not a finding about LST-986; no individual exposure aboard this hull is asserted or implied. Justia-hosted opinion text, not independently re-read this session beyond the dataset's indexed row.

    Finding
Breaking-yard asbestos documentation: the yard dataset records Moore Dry Dock Company, Oakland, CA (this hull's scrapper, delivered 27 November 1947) at evidence tier 2: the 1946 USMC-commissioned Fleischer-Drinker industrial-hygiene survey documented amosite pipe covering and asbestos boiler block insulation use in confined engine rooms and boiler spaces at Navy-contract yards of the type Moore operated, with dust counts measured during cutting/fitting; the W.A. Simons Asbestos Trust California Site List (Sep. 2020) assigns MOORE DRY DOCK-OAKLAND (Adeline St) Exposure Level H (High). Dataset product list for the yard: amosite pipe covering (block and felt), asbestos boiler block insulation, asbestos gaskets (Garlock/John Crane), asbestos millboard (Johns-Manville), asbestos deck covering. NOTE: a July 2026 C&EN report called for retraction of the Fleischer-Drinker paper citing understatement of hazards; the Simons Trust H designation independently corroborates the yard's asbestos environment.

    Limitations
Yard-level, not hull-level: documents the documented asbestos environment of the breaking yard, not this vessel. Fleischer-Drinker surveyed Navy-contract yards of this type, not necessarily this breakup; the trust list is a litigation-settlement artifact. Does not establish asbestos content of the hull being broken, individual exposure, or causation.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or verified litigation naming USS LST-986 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated helper reported the fleet daily quota exhausted (~6.4 h to reset); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no law-firm listicle or qualifying case naming this hull.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation-repository search is a genuine open gap (blocked by quota, not run). Construction at a documented wartime Navy yard, a 1945 overhaul, and 1947-48 breaking at a documented asbestos-environment yard all sit inside the asbestos-use era. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding
Archival coverage for this hull is bounded: the BuPers muster-roll file unit 'LST-986, 4/14/44-5/31/46' (NAID 126585299, RG 24, microfilm Roll 5030) spans nearly the entire commissioned life but is Ancestry-only/microfilm, not freely digitized - not read; its 5/31/46 title end-date precedes the 18 July 1946 decommissioning by ~7 weeks (final rolls may be in a separate file unit or filed with decommissioning papers). No ship-titled war diaries surfaced for LST-986 in catalog searches - unlike sister hulls (e.g., LST-979), this hull apparently did not submit standalone monthly war diaries; her COs filed operation action reports instead (ev-03, -04, -06). Additional group-level reports in which the hull is text-indexed but whose LST-986 mentions were not pinpointed include Almaack (AK-27) and Monrovia Guam reports (NAIDs 78549386, 633400415) and CTU 53.3.3's Okinawa report (NAID 140018590). WWII deck logs for this hull not located in the digitized deck-log series.

    Limitations
Archival-lead row: muster rolls not read (paywalled partner access); group-level reports carry indexed LST-986 mentions not pinpointed page-level this session; absence of ship-titled war diaries from catalog results is not proof none exist (may be undigitized or misfiled); deck-log series not exhausted. Nothing in this row is an asbestos finding.
