    Finding
NHHC DANFS: LST-996 was laid down 27 March 1944 at Boston Navy Yard; launched 2 May 1944 (sponsored by Mrs. Ursula A. Hall); and commissioned 23 May 1944 with Ens. C. A. Leach, Jr., USNR, in command. It served in the European theater during the southern France invasion in August-September 1944, then in the Asiatic-Pacific theater during the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto in April-June 1945. It was decommissioned 22 April 1946, struck 8 May 1946, and sold 12 October 1947 to Hugo Neu Steel Products Corp., New York, New York, for scrapping. DANFS credits two World War II battle stars.

    Finding
NHHC's cataloged copy of National Archives photo SC 192903 identifies USS LST-996 as the first LST to reach the beach occupied by the 45th Division during the southern France invasion on 15 August 1944; the photograph shows an Army truck driving ashore from the vessel.

    Finding
NARA Special List 44, the National Archives finding aid for Navy deck logs indexed by ship number, lists LST-996 twice with the same date span, 23 May 1944 through 30 June 1945. The listing identifies a record path for ship-specific deck logs.

    Ship's crew, 1944-1945
    Limitations
This is a finding aid, not a review of the deck logs. The duplicate index entry and the listed end date do not establish the complete surviving-log span, and no asbestos content can be inferred until records are retrieved and reviewed.

    Finding
The NavSource vessel page identifies LST-996 as an LST-542-class vessel with two General Motors 12-567A diesel engines, diesel-driven generators, and no stated boiler or steam plant. This confirms a diesel propulsion pathway and excludes boiler/turbine lagging as a documented vessel system; it does not identify any asbestos-containing product aboard the hull.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-maintained historical archive, not a Navy hull material record. The specification block is used only to characterize the class/design's diesel plant; it does not establish asbestos presence, quantity, location, condition, individual exposure, or causation aboard LST-996.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located in the public official and archival sources searched: no asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or official record identifying asbestos aboard LST-996 was found. The hull was sold for scrapping in 1947, before later Navy asbestos-management records would ordinarily exist. CourtListener litigation coverage is not included in this negative finding because the authenticated API reported a multi-hour daily-quota wait before results could be retrieved.

    Limitations
A no-record result does not prove asbestos was absent aboard the vessel and does not establish or defeat exposure, causation, or legal eligibility. It is expressly incomplete as to CourtListener because the fleet API daily quota was exhausted.
