[2]DANFS, LST-997 (NHHC page archived by the Wayback Machine 2025-04-01; live NHHC URL returned 404 on 2026-10-03) [nhhc_danfs]

- DANFS LST-997 entry, three narrative paragraphs
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Official DANFS history for this hull: laid down 27 March 1944 at Boston Navy Yard; launched 12 May 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Victoria V. Lynn; commissioned 27 May 1944, Lt. L. R. Dhuyvetter, USNR, in command. During World War II she served in the European theater and participated in the invasion of southern France in August-September 1944, then performed Far East occupation duty until mid-November 1945. She was decommissioned 7 March 1947, struck 4 April 1947, and sold 15 June 1948 to Consolidated Builders, Inc., Seattle, Washington, for scrapping. DANFS credits one World War II battle star.

- Boston Navy Yard construction trades (1944); Navy crew (1944-47)
- Limitations
- Ship-specific historical record only; it does not identify asbestos-containing materials, their locations, quantities, condition, crew exposure, or legal eligibility. The live NHHC URL is unavailable and this is explicitly an archived capture.

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource's page for this hull corroborates the Boston Navy Yard construction and 27 May 1944 commissioning, identifies the vessel as an LST-542-class tank landing ship, and gives its diesel machinery as two General Motors 12-567A 900-hp diesel engines, single Falk reduction gears, three diesel-driven 100-kW generators, two propellers, and 1,700 shp. It records the southern-France campaign (15 August-25 September 1944), Far East occupation service (15 September-15 November 1945), the 7 March 1947 decommissioning, 4 April 1947 striking, and 15 June 1948 scrap sale. Its photo captions identify NARA film NAID 24198 as showing LST-997 beached on Yellow Beach on 15 August 1944 during the invasion of southern France. It gives a conflicting launch date, 22 May 1944, rather than DANFS's 12 May date.

- Crew (1944-47); embarked personnel during southern-France operation
- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer historical compilation, used here as corroboration and an archival locator, not as a replacement for NHHC. Its launch date conflicts with the official DANFS page, so the official 12 May date is carried and the conflict is in gaps. Its machinery specifications do not establish the composition of any insulation or gasket aboard this hull; NARA film content was not independently retrieved this session.

[4]GAO, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (18 Oct. 1979; product page access blocked with HTTP 403 during this research) [gao]
- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2; prior-batch authoritative-source lead
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO's Navy-wide asbestos-protection review is an era-context source for a vessel built in 1944. It supports treating wartime Navy construction as an asbestos-use era, not treating LST-997 as a documented asbestos hull.

- 1979 report; context for 1944 construction
- Population
- Navy shipyard workers and Navy asbestos-protection program
- Limitations
- Program-level source only; it does not name LST-997 or establish any product, location, quantity, exposure, or condition aboard her. The live GAO product page returned HTTP 403, so the report text was not re-extracted in this session.

[5]Batch-7540 search ledger for USS LST-997: NHHC/DANFS, NavSource, NARA catalog lead, GAO, Firecrawl, and authenticated CourtListener helper [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger sl-uss-lst-997-lst997-01 through -06
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located in the public sources searched: no vessel asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation record was verified for USS LST-997. The CourtListener sweep is not a negative result: its first required exact-name request was rejected because the shared authenticated daily quota was exhausted (about 6.1 hours to reset), so further CourtListener requests, including the hull-number query, were stopped as instructed. Firecrawl was likewise quota-blocked.

- Limitations
- A search result is not proof of absence. In particular, CourtListener results remain unsearched due to the authenticated shared-quota stand-down; undigitized Navy maintenance records, NARA holdings, and any disposal-work records remain open leads. This row establishes neither absence of asbestos nor absence of exposure or legal eligibility.
