- Finding
- USNI documents the LST(H) type this hull joined on 15 September 1945: 'LST(H)s, configured for casualty treatment and evacuation, were not designated hospital ships because they did retain armament. Their minimal sick bays usually were tended by one or two pharmacist's mates. With additional personnel, 150 cots could be installed, but when necessary up to 370 cases could be accommodated in troop quarters and on the tank deck.' Augmented LSTs served at Tarawa (1943), the Philippines (1944), and Iwo Jima and Okinawa (1945) with surgical teams of up to five physicians and 35 pharmacist's mates. 'Anticipating a huge butcher's bill for the potential invasion of Japan in November 1945, 36 LSTs were to be designated LST(H)s' for Operation Olympic on Kyushu - the wave into which this hull's 15 September 1945 redesignation falls.

Asbestos-relevant applications for the type and era were diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/brake linings; the September 1945 LST(H) conversion added interior medical-space outfitting of undetermined scope.

- Finding
- Builder-yard litigation documentation: in this Texas appellate mandamus opinion over the scope of discovery requests, plaintiff Carl Terranova 'alleged that, while working at the Boston Naval Shipyard in Boston, Massachusetts, he was exposed to John Crane's gaskets and sealing materials which contained asbestos.' This hull was built at that yard in June-August 1944. The opinion also records John Crane's statement that it 'has never manufactured, supplied, sold or produced asbestos insulation products' but manufactures 'engineered sealing products, some of which contained asbestos.'

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s; the Navy's 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for repairs, modified 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas. The hull's entire U.S. Navy era (1944-46) sits inside the unrestricted asbestos-use period.

CourtListener API v4 returned zero hits for 'LST-1033' on the opinion index and zero on the RECAP docket index; the variant sweep ('LST-1033' OR 'LST(H)-1033' OR 'LSTH-1033') on opinions also returned zero.
