Gott; commissioned 15 May 1943; redesignated LSTH on 15 September 1945. WWII assignment: Asiatic-Pacific theater - Gilbert Islands operation (November-December 1943); Marianas operation, capture and occupation of Saipan (June-July 1944); Tinian capture and occupation (July 1944); Western Caroline Islands operations, capture and occupation of southern Palau Islands (September-October 1944). Post-war: occupation duty in the Far East in October and December 1945; decommissioned 20 March 1946; struck from the Navy list 1 May 1946; sold 5 December 1947 to Ships and Power Equipment Co., of Barber, N.J., for scrapping. NavSource documents for this hull: 'USS LST-19 was manned by a Coast Guard crew during World War II'; laid down 22 October 1942 at Dravo Corp., Neville Island, PA; launched 11 March 1943; commissioned USS LST-19 on 15 May 1943, LCDR Charles M. Blackford III, USCGR, in command; assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater under LST Flotilla Thirteen, LST Group Thirty-Seven, LST Division Seventy-Three. Campaign table: Gilbert Islands operation (Makin and Tarawa Island landings, 28 November-8 December 1943); Marianas operation (capture and occupation of Saipan, 15 June 1944); Tinian capture and occupation (24-28 July 1944); Western Caroline Islands operations (capture and occupation of southern Palau Islands, 6 September-14 October 1944). Redesignated Landing Ship Tank (Hospital) LST(H)-19 on 15 September 1945; occupation service in the Far East 27 October-2 December 1945; decommissioned 20 March 1946; struck from the Naval Register 1 May 1946; four battle stars; sold for scrapping 5 December 1947 to Ships and Power Equipment Co., of Barber, N.J. Photo captions place the hull beached in Kiska Harbor on 19 August 1943 (citing the August 1943 war diary), at Peleliu, entering a floating drydock at Kossel Roads, Babelthuap Island, in January 1945 alongside USS Munsee (ATF-107), anchored in Long Beach Harbor in April 1945, and in San Diego Bay in July 1945.

NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates track DANFS and the ship's war diaries but are compiled. Contains no asbestos content. Photo-caption itinerary details (Kiska, Kossel Roads drydock, Long Beach, San Diego) derive from cited war diaries and contributor photographs; they establish the ship's movements, not any material condition.

NARA's Special List 44 inventories Navy deck logs for LST-19 covering 14 May 1943 through 30 June 1945 (entry 'LST-19 | 5/14/1943 | 6/30/1945'), confirming that dated contemporaneous Navy records for this hull exist in NARA custody for the full commissioned WWII period. The logbooks themselves are not digitized in the National Archives Catalog (the NARA online deck-log list includes only LST-652 and LST-914 among LSTs).

Log-coverage dates are an inventory of extant records, not commissioning documentation - the 5/14/1943 start is one day before the DANFS/NavSource commissioning date of 15 May 1943 and is not asserted here as a commissioning date. The logs were not individually reviewed; their content (weather, positions, personnel entries) is operational, not material-history documentation. No asbestos relevance is claimed from this source.

The official USCG war history lists LST-19 among Coast Guard-manned ships entitled to operation/engagement stars for four operations: Gilbert Island Operation (P25); Capture and Occupation of Saipan (P29-2); Capture and Occupation of Tinian (P29-8); and Capture and Occupation of Southern Palau Islands (P30-2). This independently corroborates the ship-specific facts that LST-19 was Coast Guard-manned and earned its four battle stars for exactly the campaigns listed by DANFS/NavSource.

    Finding
A serving crewmember's firsthand account documents for this hull: in late December 1944, while beached on Purple Beach, Peleliu, LST-19 broached and was impaled on coral heads when a moored consort's quarter wire parted; main and auxiliary engine rooms flooded; the ship lay broached for thirteen days with no power or fresh water before being kedged free; damage listed as 111 holes below the waterline and two forward starboard compartments sliced open. She was towed by USS Munsee (ATF-107) toward a floating drydock at Kossel Roads, Babelthuap Island (January 1945), survived the great February 1945 typhoon at anchor, received further repairs moored to an ARL at Ulithi, then steamed - on engines with a whipped port shaft - to Pearl Harbor (arriving around the death of President Roosevelt, April 1945), then Long Beach, and finally to the Coast Guard repair base at San Pedro, California, 'where it would be converted to an LSTH for the final assault on the Japanese mainland.'

    Limitations
A single veteran's recollection published on NavSource - firsthand but unofficial; incident-level details (day counts, hole count, verbatim exchanges) are not independently corroborated, though the endpoints (Peleliu grounding photos, Kossel Roads drydock photo, Long Beach April 1945 photo, LST(H) redesignation date) match the official record. Establishes a major battle-damage/repair period and a conversion yard period - both exposure-relevant event classes in the era - but contains no asbestos or material content.

Era/design inference for this diesel-powered hull: LST-19 carried two General Motors 12-567A diesel engines (900 hp each, 1,700 shp total, Falk reduction gears, two shafts - NavSource spec block matching the BuShips SDB 1945 v2 class design). With no steam plant aboard, the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; era-standard asbestos-relevant applications for a 1942-43 amphibious hull of this type were diesel-exhaust lagging, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, machinery gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and brake linings on winches/cranes. The 1945 LST(H) conversion (interior accommodation rework at a Coast Guard repair base) is an additional era-consistent disturbance window.

Att'y Gen., filed 1965-07-02) re county-judge appointment, a name collision with no vessel relevance; docket and LST(H)-19 searches could not be completed (fleet pacing budget spent, helper-enforced stand-down) [court_record]

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LST-19 / LST(H)-19 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The only CourtListener opinion-level 'LST-19' hit is a 1965 Texas Attorney General opinion on county government - a name collision, not a case naming the vessel. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is generic law-firm marketing copy (gorilaw.com 'Asbestos on Landing Ships,' asbestos.com amphibious-vessel lists) asserting asbestos for LSTs as a class without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era construction practice makes installed asbestos plausible, and the CourtListener docket index and 'LST(H)-19'/'LST 19' variants remain UNSEARCHED this session (fleet pacing stand-down; logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result). The hull was scrapped in 1947-48, decades before modern ACM-handling documentation. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
