- DANFS record for this hull: named for Ensign Chan Lyman, USNR, killed aboard fleet oiler Neosho (AO-23) at the Battle of the Coral Sea, 7 May 1942. Spec block: 1,140 t.; 289'5"; 35'1"; 8'3"; 21 kt; cpl. 156; 3x3", 4x1.1", 9x20mm, 8 dcp, 1 hedgehog, 2 dct; class Evarts. Laid down 22 April 1943 by Mare Island Navy Yard, Calif.; launched 19 August 1943 (sponsor Mrs. Chan Lyman, widow); commissioned 19 February 1944, Lt. Comdr. James W. Wilson. Cleared San Francisco Bay 23 April 1944 for Pearl Harbor training duty (target for fleet submarines, screen for escort carriers); departed 20 August 1944 for 13 months screening 3d/5th Fleet supply ships; Kossol Passage 20 September, screened Western Garrison Group during Palau invasions; departed Peleliu 22 October escorting 1st Marines elements to Russell Islands; Manus availability 'marked 7 November' by the explosion of an ammunition ship nearby (date conflict - see ev-uss-lyman-de302-03); a week later at Ulithi a midget submarine torpedoed an oiler in the same anchorage; weighed anchor 16 December screening auxiliaries for the Lingayen Gulf invasion; Ulithi 14 January 1945; early February protecting a replenishment group during Iwo Jima; Ryukyus 22 March-11 June for Okinawa; typhoon 5 June rolled the ship 65 degrees forcing withdrawal for repairs; underway 3 July, ended war guarding 3d Fleet supply ships during strikes on the home islands; entered Tokyo Bay 30 August, present for the 2 September surrender; debarked 80 veterans at San Francisco 8 October; sailed to Richmond, Calif., 8 November; decommissioned 5 December 1945; sold to Puget Sound Navigation Co., Seattle, 26 December 1946. Five battle stars for World War II.

- Contemporaneous primary document from this hull: commissioned 19 February 1944; completed shakedown and departed the United States 23 April 1944; arrived Pearl Harbor 1 May; through 1 August attached to Commander Submarine Training, Pacific Fleet (training fleet submarines and wolf packs daily), then to 19 August under Commander Destroyers, Pacific Fleet screening CVE flight training. Departed 20 August for the Palau campaign screening the Western Garrison Group via Kwajalein and Manus; arrived Kossol Passage 20 September; screened at Angaur, Peleliu, and Kossol until 22 October, then escorted First Marine Division elements to the Russell Islands (combat star). At Manus with the Logistics Support Group, THIRD Fleet, when USS Mount Hood (AE-11) blew up 10 November 1944 - no Lyman casualties, but one piece of shrapnel penetrated the main deck into the engine room and several others landed on deck; USS Wyne (DE-744), moored alongside, lost one man killed; Lyman supplied medical assistance to USS Mindanao (ARG-3). Reached Ulithi 17 November; present for the torpedoing of USS Mississinewa (AO-59) 'by a midget Japanese submarine' 20 November 1944; joined the sound search and night patrol. 29 November-8 December, Eniwetok oiler-convoy round trip. 16 December sailed with a replenishment group, joining the main body the morning after 'the disastrous typhoon of December 1944' (Typhoon Cobra); supported the Lingayen Gulf landings; Ulithi 14 January 1945. 8 February-4 March, Logistics Support Group, FIFTH Fleet, Iwo Jima (second combat star). 13 March-11 June, Logistics Support Group off Okinawa; in the 5 June typhoon passed through the storm's center - barometer 28.18 inches, wind 100 knots, rolled 65 degrees, 'only superficial damage was suffered' (combat star). 2 July-20 August, Logistics Support Group, THIRD Fleet, against the Japanese homeland. 22 August 1945 Lt. Comdr. John D. Lawson relieved Lt. Comdr. James W. Wilson. 24 August sailed with replenishment tankers to Tokyo Bay - 'the Lyman was the first Destroyer Escort to enter the bay,' about noon 30 August; remained through the surrender ceremony, departing 3 September; escorted three ammunition ships to Leyte Gulf, then Ulithi, and received orders home. Logistics-group work included transfers to 'as many as thirty ships in one day'; four mines exploded or sunk; no enemy action encountered by gunfire.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Date-conflict resolution: DANFS reads 'Her first port availability period at Manus, Admiralty Islands, was marked 7 November by the explosion of an ammunition ship nearby.' The ship's own contemporaneous war history reads that she 'was present when the U.S.S. MOUNT HOOD (AE-11) blew up on 10 November 1944.' The primary document (10 November) is carried - it matches AE-11's documented loss date; the DANFS '7 November' is retained only as the source of the discrepancy.

- Limitations
- Resolves a one-line DANFS ambiguity against the hull's own submission; the event itself (nearby explosion, shrapnel aboard, no Lyman casualties) is not in dispute. Does not bear on materials or asbestos.

- Compiled building/operational record for this hull: keel laid 22 April 1943 by Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, Cal.; launched and christened 19 August 1943 (sponsor Mrs. Chan Lyman); commissioned 19 February 1944, Lcdr. James W. Wilson in command; decommissioned 5 December 1945 at Kaiser Yard #2, Richmond, Cal., after 1 year 9.5 months of service; struck from the NVR 19 December 1945; sold for scrapping 26 December 1946 to the Puget Sound Navigation Co., Seattle, Wash. CO list: Wilson (19 Feb 1944-22 Aug 1945), Lawson (22 Aug-3 Dec 1945). Specs block: Evarts class, GMT type (diesel-electric tandem-motor drive, short hull, 3" guns); 4x GM 16-278A diesels, electric drive, 6,000 shp, 2 screws, 19 kt; complement 15/183.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer-compiled archive, not an official Navy source - the strike date and the Kaiser Yard #2 decommissioning detail rest on its compilation (consistent with DANFS's 'sailed to Richmond ... decommissioned 5 December 1945'); no digitized NVR extract was located. Its complement figure (15/183) conflicts with the DANFS design figure (156) - carried in gaps.

- Finding
- Era/design inference for a GMT-type (diesel-electric) destroyer escort built at Mare Island Navy Yard 1943-44: NO boilers or steam plant - the steam-lagging pathway does not apply; plausible asbestos applications on this type concentrate in diesel-engine and exhaust-system insulation, gaskets and packing throughout the engineering spaces, electrical insulation/cable, deck coverings, accommodation-space insulation, and brake/friction linings on deck machinery. GAO HRD-80-2 documents that the Navy did not begin systematic asbestos substitution until the early 1970s - decades after this hull left service (1945) and was sold for scrap (1946). Builder yard (Mare Island) is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (tier 2 - 1998 Navy/Vallejo EIS/EIR documents ACM in yard buildings); inactivation yard (Kaiser Richmond) likewise (tier 3 - DTSC Richmond Harbor records document ACM at the Kaiser shipyard site).

Yard-level ACM documentation speaks to the facilities, not to material installed aboard DE-302. Does not establish presence, absence, or quantity of ACM aboard.

- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation names this hull. "USS Lyman" exact-phrase: 1 opinion hit - Andrews v. State (Miss. 1954), a Grenada County burglary prosecution, name collision; 2 RECAP docket hits, both asbestos cases, BOTH RESOLVED BY FULL-TEXT REVIEW as references to a different hull - USS Lyman K. Swenson (DD-729): Pelton v. John Crane (368 P.I. Asbestos, removed from Cook County 2021L006906) alleges pipefitter/shipfitter service aboard 'U.S.S. Lyman K. Swenson (DD-729), U.S.S. Pritchett (DD-561) and the U.S.S. Frontier (AD-25)' 1959-1963 (ECF 1/12-1); Dennis v. Air & Liquid Systems ('Diversity-Asbestos Litigation') contains 'USS Lyman K. Swenson (DD 729)' only in a stipulated protective order's exhibit list of export-controlled Navy documents (ECF 81, Ex. A). "DE-302": 18 opinion + 386 docket hits, all identifier collisions (ECF 'DE' docket-entry numbers, exhibit/page/statute references). "aboard the Lyman"/variants: 0 hits. "Lyman"+asbestos: 65 surname collisions (parties/counsel named Lyman), no naval context.

- Limitations
- The only asbestos-docket matches for 'USS Lyman' name DD-729 (explicit hull number in both documents) - a Sumner-class destroyer, not this hull; classified as name collisions after full-text review, not as qualifying hits. A complaint's ship list is a pleading-stage allegation even where a hull IS named; here the named hull is not DE-302 at all. Sweep covers CourtListener's opinion and RECAP indexes - state-court filings not captured by RECAP are out of scope, as are PACER documents not yet mirrored.
