- Specifications block; service narrative, paragraphs 1-7; final disposition paragraph
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS identifies MacLeish (DD-220) as a Clemson-class destroyer built by William Cramp & Sons at Philadelphia: laid down 19 August 1919, launched 18 December 1919, commissioned 2 August 1920. It records Mediterranean/Black Sea and China-station service, decommissioning 11 March 1938, recommissioning in September 1939, Atlantic convoy service during World War II, target-ship duty in 1944-45, redesignation AG-87, final decommissioning 8 March 1946, striking 13 November 1946, sale to Boston Metals Co. 18 December 1946, one battle star, and a specifications complement of 101.

- Limitations
- This is a ship history, not a material inventory or exposure record. Its 5 January '1915' redesignation is a chronological typo; the narrative places the event after 1944 service, so 1945 is inferred and the exact year remains flagged. DANFS prints 25 September 1939 for recommissioning; the NARA deck-log index begins 26 September. The 101 complement is a specifications figure, not a verified wartime headcount.

[3]National Archives, Special List 44, Named Vessels, Macleish entries [other_primary]
- Locator
- Alphabetical table, two Macleish (DD-220, AG-87) rows
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's Special List 44 identifies deck-log runs for Macleish (DD-220, AG-87): 2 August 1920 to 11 March 1938 and 26 September 1939 to 30 June 1945. These are archival holdings dates, not proof of materials or a final decommissioning date.

- Limitations
- The public index gives log coverage only; individual logs were not inspected. NARA says deck logs can narrow overhaul dates but provide no direct evidence of asbestos. The 1939 start differs by one day from the DANFS recommissioning date.

[4]National Archives, 'Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961' [other_primary]

- General Information Books; Board of Inspection and Survey Reports; Cartographic Branch ship engineering drawings; Other Records and their usefulness
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's shipboard-asbestos research guide identifies potentially relevant, unexamined holdings: RG 19 destroyer General Information Books (Entry P 9); RG 38 destroyer material inspection reports (Entry P 1-D); and RG 19 hull-number-arranged engineering drawings, including the uncommon S39 insulation/lagging and S48 piping drawings. These series are the next route to verify DD-220-specific material content.

- Limitations
- The guide identifies record series, not a DD-220 item within them. GIB coverage is incomplete; no DD-220 GIB, inspection report, S39 drawing, or S48 drawing was retrieved. NARA explicitly says deck logs and muster rolls give no direct evidence of shipboard asbestos.

[5]NHHC, H-064-2, 'Close Quarters Antisubmarine Warfare (Part 2)'; NAVSEA, NSTM Chapter 050, section 050-7.2.7 (2005) [other_primary]
- Locator
- NHHC H-064-2, Clemson-class paragraph; NSTM 050, section 050-7.2.7
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NHHC's Clemson-class account describes the class as two-screw, geared-turbine destroyers. NAVSEA's inactive-ships technical manual states that past naval shipbuilding programs extensively used asbestos in installations such as thermal insulation and deck tile. Together these provide class and broad-era context for research, without identifying any asbestos aboard MacLeish.

- Limitations
- NHHC discusses Clemson-class Borie, not MacLeish's individual plant; NAVSEA discusses past Navy programs generally in a 2005 manual. Neither identifies an asbestos product, location, installation date, or exposure aboard DD-220. No ship-specific finding may be inferred from these sources.

[6]Documented negative finding from the 2026-09-27 official-source search ledger, with NARA's asbestos research guide as method reference [other_primary]
- Locator
- Search ledger sl-01 through sl-05; NARA guide, Beginning Research and Other Records
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No DD-220-specific asbestos survey, specification, abatement record, or other primary material document was located in the reviewed online NHHC, NARA, and NAVSEA sources. Asbestos presence and crew or yard-worker exposure aboard this hull remain unknown.

- Limitations
- A negative finding about this bounded online search, not proof the ship lacked asbestos. Unexamined archival records may change the result. No individual exposure, product, quantity, location, or causal conclusion is supported.
