DANFS record for this hull: laid down 3 September 1940 by Bath Iron Works Corp., Bath, Maine; launched 23 September 1941, cosponsored by Mrs. Ryland W. Greene and Mrs. Edward H. Chew, granddaughters of Commodore William H. Macomb; commissioned 26 January 1942 (Lt. Comdr. W. K. Duvall). Atlantic convoy/carrier escort; Casablanca carrier screen (November 1942); Argentia North Atlantic patrol and British Home Fleet tour (1943); Mediterranean from 20 April 1944; 72-hour group hunt commencing just before midnight 16 May 1944 ending in the sinking of U-616 (DANFS credits Macomb's depth charges and guns); southern France invasion mid-August 1944. Arrived Charleston Navy Yard 9 November 1944 for conversion to destroyer minesweeper; redesignated DMS-23 15 November; Mine Squadron 20, TG 52.2, first task group into Okinawan waters mid-March 1945; three planes splashed 27 April; kamikaze crash 3 May causing extensive damage; Navy Unit Commendation for the Okinawa campaign; Saipan repairs; Tokyo Bay 29 August 1945 ahead of Missouri and Iowa; minesweeping Japan/Okinawa/Yellow Sea/Chosen Straits; departed Sasebo 5 December 1945 for Norfolk; Charleston home port June 1946; three Sixth Fleet Mediterranean tours (1949, 1951, 1953); in reserve July 1954; decommissioned 19 October 1954 and transferred to Japan as Hatakaze (DD-182), JMSDF. Five World War II battle stars.

Bath Iron Works construction trades 1940-42; wartime and postwar crew (DANFS design complement 276)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. NHHC's own online text carries OCR artifacts ('cl. Weaves' for Gleaves; 'wasplaced'); the hazegray transcription of the same entry introduces additional errors (misprints the hull number 'DD-468', reads commissioned 28 January, Charleston home port June 1948, and Emmons sunk 8 April) - NHHC text controls. Ammunition/dimension figures differ between the two transcriptions and NavSource.

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull: a signed district-court opinion entered on the docket recites that in Answers to Standard Interrogatories plaintiff Harold Thomasson, a U.S. Navy Metalworker 3rd Class 1950-1954, alleged asbestos exposure aboard USS Fitch between 20 February 1952 and 15 November 1953 and aboard USS Macomb from 15 November 1953 through 22 May 1954. The opinion itself decides only the timeliness of federal-officer removal under 28 U.S.C. §§ 1442/1446(b) - plaintiffs' remand motion denied 17 June 2013 - so the exposure allegation is recited from discovery responses, not adjudicated. During 1953-54 the only USS Macomb in existence was this hull (DD-458). The opinion twice misspells the ship 'USS Malcomb'.

    Population
Harold Thomasson, USN Metalworker 3rd Class 1950-1954, aboard DD-458 Nov 1953-May 1954 (alleged)
    Limitations
Discovery-stage allegation (interrogatory answers) recited in a removal-timeliness opinion - pleading/discovery posture, never a merits finding: it alleges but does not adjudicate exposure aboard this hull, and does not identify which materials or products caused exposure. Notably the complaint EXPRESSLY DISCLAIMED Navy-service asbestos claims against the removing defendants (CBS f/k/a Westinghouse, Foster Wheeler, GE); the Navy-exposure allegation surfaced only in interrogatory answers. Case terminated 2016-01-28; merits disposition not located in the sweep.

    Finding type
    litigation_product_id
    Finding
Same opinion recites that the removing defendants 'were then able to research and confirm that GE manufactured the turbines on the USS Macomb, that Westinghouse manufactured the turbines for both the USS Fitch and USS Macomb, and that Foster Wheeler manufactured the economizers on the USS Fitch and USS Macomb' - a litigation-context identification of machinery OEMs aboard this hull, made by the defendants in support of a federal-government-contractor removal theory.

2013 (litigation recital of wartime construction provenance)
    Population
Crew serving in machinery spaces, 1942-1954 (by implication only)
    Limitations
Recital of defendants' research inside a removal-timeliness opinion - equipment provenance, not an asbestos-content finding and not adjudicated. The recital assigns both GE and Westinghouse turbines to Macomb, which conflicts with NavSource's spec block (two Westinghouse geared turbines); which builder made which set is unresolved and carried in gaps. Does not establish that the identified equipment contained asbestos.

    Limitations
NavSource is a reputable volunteer-maintained archival compilation - secondary tier; post-1954 foreign-service detail (JMSDF/ROCN dates, pennant 'DD 1016' vs the 'DD-16' form used in Jane's-derived sources) is not covered by DANFS and rests on this and related secondary compilations. ROCN 'decommissioned 1974' conflicts slightly with the Jane's-chain account (decommissioned 1972, struck 1974, dockside trainer through 1978).

Era/yard inference only: a Gleaves-class (1941-repeat 'Bristol' group) destroyer built 1940-42 with four superheated Babcock & Wilcox boilers and twin geared steam turbines would have carried period-standard asbestos boiler/turbine insulation, steam-line lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. Builder Bath Iron Works is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (tier 2) including the 1942 Drinker study of pipe-covering-shop dust risk; the November-December 1944 conversion to DMS-23 was performed at Charleston Navy Yard, also a tier-2 yard with documented asbestos products. No ship-specific ACM inventory, survey, or abatement record is public.

Class/era and builder-yard inference only - this row does NOT establish asbestos aboard this hull. The only ship-specific asbestos-related records are the Thomasson allegation and product-ID recital (ev-02, ev-03), both allegation-stage. NARA RG 19 General Information Books (per-vessel material specifications) and the DD-458/DMS-23 deck logs (NAID 594258 series) are unexamined archival leads.

    Finding
No non-litigation ship-specific asbestos record located for DD-458: no hull ACM survey, no abatement contract, no museum or donation-condition hazmat disclosure (the hull was never preserved - transferred to Japan 1954, Taiwan 1970, cannibalized in ROC service), and no NPS/HAER or government survey names this hull. CourtListener sweep: exact-name 'USS Macomb' returned zero opinion hits and one qualifying asbestos docket (Thomasson, ev-02/03); 'DD-458' returned Thomasson plus docket-number collisions (a Fla. DCA 'No. DD-458', a bankruptcy, a civil-rights case); 'Macomb' + asbestos returned 25 opinion hits and 323 docket hits, all Macomb County MI / place-name / surname / corporate-name collisions - the only asbestos dockets in that set match 'Macomb' as a plaintiff surname (Macomb v. A-C Product Liability Trust, E.D. Pa., MDL-875 dismissal order) or a corporate defendant (Macomb Group, Inc., in French v. A.W. Chesterton, N.D. Ohio), neither referencing a vessel; 'USS Malcomb' (the opinion's misspelling) returns only Thomasson; 'DMS-23' returned 48 docket-number/entity collisions, none asbestos or vessel-related.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1940-42 steam-destroyer build is era-consistent with asbestos materials, but that is not a ship-specific finding. Exact-name and hull-number sweeps could still miss dockets indexed under OCR variants not anticipated here; within the sweep run, no asbestos case other than Thomasson names this hull.
