    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and characteristics, not materials or asbestos content. The entry prints the ROC name as 'Yung Shun (MSF-46)' - contradicted by ROC-side records identifying this hull as Yung Ning (永寧) and Yung Shun as ex-USS Logic AM-258 (see ev-uss-magnet-am260-07). DANFS also gives no decommissioning-location facility detail beyond 'Miami.' Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404 and the HyperWar DANFS mirror lacks AM-260.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-run archive reproducing official characteristics and NVR data; the propulsion row is not independently confirmed against a primary BuShips specification sheet - the Admirable-class builder/engine breakdown places the Lorain block (incl. AM-255-266) in the Cooper Bessemer GSB-8 / National Supply group, matching same-yard sisters, while Wikipedia's ship infobox gives class-generic ALCO 539/Farrel-Birmingham and HyperWar reads 'diesel-electric, 1,800 h.p.' (conflict logged in gaps). NavSource repeats DANFS's 'Yung Shun (MSF 46)' ROC-name error and prints 'removed from service 1963' - contradicted by ROC-side records of the 1958 Green Island loss (see ev-08). Contains no materials or asbestos information.

Builder context: the Lorain yard that built this hull began as Cleveland Shipbuilding (1886), relocated to Lorain in 1897, and was acquired by American Ship Building Co. in 1899, becoming its Lorain Division. AmShip was the largest Great Lakes shipbuilder by 1952; the Lorain yard closed December 1983 and the company entered bankruptcy in 1993. Colton's AmShip Lorain yard table confirms this hull as yard #835 ('Magnet (AM 260)', U.S. Navy minesweeper, 650d/184 ft, delivered Apr-44, 'To China 1948 as Yung Ning, to Taiwan 1949, struck 1963') and places it in the Lorain Admirable block AM-255 through AM-266 with sisters Jubilant, Knave, Lance, Logic, Lucid, Mainstay, Marvel, Measure, Method, Mirth, Nimble.

GAO's program review of Navy asbestos exposure records the Navy's position that 'all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables' and that thermal insulation was 'the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships.' Era-level confirmation that WWII-built Navy hulls carried asbestos-containing components; for this diesel minesweeper the thermal-insulation pathway is largely absent by design, leaving the small-component uses (cable insulation, gaskets, clutch/brake linings, exhaust lagging) as the era-consistent candidates.

    Finding
Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and emergency construction program under which this hull was built at American Shipbuilding Co., Lorain, in 1943. VA adjudication guidance (DVB Circular 21-88-8, carried into M21-1) likewise recites that chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite 'were used extensively in military ship construction' during WWII.

Admirable class minesweepers formed the majority of American minesweepers built during World War II.' It documents USS Hazard (AM-240) as 'one of the best preserved and intact warships remaining from World War II ... a virtual time capsule dating from 1945' - evidence that class-standard WWII construction survives essentially unaltered on at least one sister hull.

    Finding
Source conflict resolved: DANFS, NavSource, uboat.net, and NavalCoverMuseum all print this hull's ROC name as 'Yung Shun (MSF-46).' ROC-side records consistently identify ex-USS Magnet (AM-260) as ROCS Yung Ning (永寧), pennant AM-46: navypedia's Yung Ning group table maps ex-Magnet (Lorain, laid 3.1943, launched 5.6.1943, comm 3.1944 // 8.1945 - exact match to this hull's dates) to 永寧 Yung Ning and ex-USS Logic (AM-258) to 永順 Yung Shun; Colton's Lorain yard table independently maps AM-260 to 'Yung Ning' and AM-258 to 'Yung Shun'; a ROC Navy photo-archive image (Gwulo) shows Yung Ning, Yung Ting, and Yung Shun as three distinct hulls. DANFS appears to have grafted the correct pennant (46) onto the wrong name - Yung Shun was Logic's ROC name at pennant AM-44 (see batch-1230 uss-logic-am258 record). Yung Ning carried; 'Yung Shun (MSF-46)' is not adopted for this hull.

ROC-era disposition of this hull: as Yung Ning (永寧) she served through the Chinese Civil War and withdrew to Taiwan in 1949. On the night of 26-27 January 1958, carrying American passengers on a visit to Green Island (綠島) off Taitung, she was caught at anchor in the outer roadstead by a storm and driven onto the reef off Zhongliao on the island's north side - a constructive total loss. Her commanding officer, Lt. Liu Ho-chien - later ROCN Commander-in-Chief and Chief of the General Staff - ordered abandon ship and attempted to go down with her (UDN recounts the crew forced him into a boat; the NTU chronology records he shot himself and was severely wounded). All hands and passengers were evacuated. Unsalvageable, Yung Ning was decommissioned and dismantled in place 1 March 1958.

U.S.-side compilations (NavSource 'removed from service 1963, believed scrapped'; Colton 'struck 1963') conflict with the documented 1958 loss - carried in gaps. Finding
Archival leads for hull-level material documentation: BGSU holds the American Ship Building Company and Predecessors records (GLMS-0075), whose primary component is naval architectural drawings covering Great Lakes-built vessels including warships, plus a Specifications and Contracts series - a hull-level drawing or specification set for AM-260, if present, could resolve the materials questions the public record does not. At NARA: deck logs for the 1944-45 U.S. service period (RG 24) and a WWII war diary (RG 38) covering commissioning through the lend-lease transfer likely exist - sister hull USS Logic (AM-258)'s war diary is confirmed in the catalog (ID 77500818, microfilm serial 142624) for the identical service period; BuShips design records (RG 19) are the only realistic path to a class materials schedule.

Finding-aid level confirmation only - the BGSU collection is unindexed to hull in public description (drawings in offsite storage, 72-hour access notice). NARA catalog API returned an HTML shell, not queryable records, in-session (same limitation as batches 1154/1227/1230), and the DPLA API now requires a key, so a Magnet war-diary record could not be individually confirmed - inferred likely from the sister hull's confirmed holding. Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943 combatant hull is era-consistent with asbestos-containing components, and the hull's documented history contains no survey or abatement event that would generate such a record; the 1958 reef loss and in-place dismantling foreclose future in-situ documentation. Does not establish that asbestos is or was not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. Litigation coverage is incomplete pending an unthrottled CourtListener pass.
