- DANFS record for this hull: Wickes-class destroyer laid down 4 May 1918 by Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, Mass.; launched 4 August 1918; commissioned 24 October 1918, Lt. Comdr. F. P. Conger in command. Shakedown off Cuba; May 1919 guide ship in the Azores for the NC-1/NC-3/NC-4 transatlantic flying-boat flights; returned to Boston via Brest 21 June 1919; converted to a light minelayer and redesignated DM-7, 17 July 1920. Operated east coast, Caribbean, and off the Panama Canal Zone 1920-1929 (one Pearl Harbor maneuver cruise early 1925); International Six Meter race patrols 1922 and 1927; salvage operations for submarines S-51 (September 1925, off Block Island) and S-4 (December 1927-mid-March 1928, off Provincetown); Caribbean reserve-training cruises 1928-September 1929; served throughout as an experimental ship testing new equipment. Entered Philadelphia Navy Yard 20 September 1929; decommissioned 1 May 1930; struck from the Navy Register 22 October 1930; sold for scrap 17 January 1931 to Boston Iron & Metal Co., Baltimore, Md.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Live NHHC DANFS page could not be located (standard URL patterns return 404); verbatim HyperWar/ibiblio transcription cited. DANFS's launched date (4 August 1918) conflicts with the NavSource destroyer index (18 August 1918) - carried in gaps.

- NavSource records for this hull: Wickes class, Bethlehem 'Little' variant ('Built to a different set of plans (Bethlehem) than the Wickes (Bath)'); built Bethlehem Steel, Quincy, MA (yard no. 308); laid down 4 May 1918; commissioned 24 October 1918 at Boston Navy Yard; reclassified light minelayer DM-7 at Boston Navy Yard 17 July 1920; decommissioned Philadelphia 1 May 1930 and berthed there until sale; stricken 22 October 1930; sold 17 January 1931 to Boston Iron & Metal, Baltimore, and broken up. - Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer-maintained archival compilation, not a government source; it agrees with DANFS on all principal dates except launch day (4 August on the DM-7 page and DANFS vs. 18 August 1918 on the NavSource destroyer index - variance carried in gaps). The '1921' machinery change is NavSource's entry; no primary re-engining/re-boilering order was located. Documents machinery and dates, not asbestos content.

- Finding
- Era inference: a World War I-era destroyer built 1918 with a four-boiler geared-steam-turbine plant would have carried period-standard asbestos-containing insulation and lagging on boilers, turbines, and steam lines, plus asbestos gaskets and packing in steam and machinery systems; builder Fore River Shipyard is documented in the Atlas yard dataset as a tier-3 yard with era asbestos product use (boilers, pipes, turbines, fireproofing, gaskets, packing, electrical components, asbestos wire insulation, asbestos cement, asbestos paint).

- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. No insulation survey, abatement record, or materials documentation for DD-102 exists or was located; the hull was scrapped in 1931. The yard's located asbestos records (e.g., O'Connor v. Raymark, 1940s welding blankets; Oliver v. GE, 1967-70 apprentice exposure) postdate this hull's existence and evidence the yard's practices, not this ship's materials.

[4]Chesher v. 3M Co., 234 F. Supp. 3d 693 (D.S.C. 2017) (Crane Co. summary-judgment motion denied) [court_record]
- Locator
- Opinion footnote 1 (ship list); background section (service dates 1965-1989)
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Verified name collision: 'USS Mahan' appears in this asbestos personal-injury opinion only in a footnote listing ships on which plaintiff James Wilson Chesher served (Crane 'admits to supplying valves to the USS Cadmus, USS Fox, USS Mahan, and USS Pratt'). Chesher's Navy service ran 1965-1989; throughout that window the only commissioned USS Mahan was DDG-42 (Farragut-class guided-missile destroyer, in commission 1960-1993). DD-102 was scrapped in 1931, more than three decades before Chesher's enlistment - the opinion cannot refer to this hull.

- James W. Chesher (USN machinist mate/officer 1965-1989, mesothelioma) - different hull
- Limitations
- Documents a different hull (DDG-42); establishes nothing about DD-102. Carried as a correction row because CourtListener exact-name searches for 'USS Mahan' + asbestos return this merits-stage opinion; unreviewed readers could otherwise misattribute it. The opinion itself resolves a duty-to-warn summary-judgment motion (denied), not any exposure finding as to this vessel.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation names DD-102/DM-7. The hull was scrapped in 1931, before asbestos-litigation and hazmat-survey regimes existed; no post-service custodian (museum, memorial, reserve fleet) generated disclosure records. CourtListener exact-name hit (Chesher v. 3M) is a verified DDG-42 name collision; hull-number queries returned identifier collisions only (docket-number and text-token matches in non-naval cases).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1918 steam-plant destroyer is consistent with era asbestos use, and the hull was broken up without any documented survey. Does not establish or defeat any claim of historical exposure or legal eligibility.
