Mahan; commissioned 18 September 1936 (Comdr. J. B. Waller). Specification block: 1,460 tons, 341'4" length, 34'8" beam, 35 kt, complement 204, 5x5" guns and 12x21" torpedo tubes, class Mahan. Service: Caribbean/South American shakedown Nov 1936-Jan 1937; east coast to July 1937; Pearl Harbor station; at sea with TF 12 on 7 December 1941; Johnston Island reinforcement; convoy screening; Canton Island patrol; Santa Cruz Islands battle 27 October 1942 (splashed four aircraft; collided with USS South Dakota; new bow fitted at Pearl Harbor); New Guinea operations 1943 (Nassau Bay, Finschhafen bombardment and landing, Lae, Arawe, Cape Gloucester); Admiralties Feb 1944; San Francisco overhaul spring 1944; Leyte patrol Nov 1944. Lost 7 December 1944 between Leyte and Ponson Island: three kamikaze hits, fires reached magazines, abandoned, sunk by USS Walke gunfire and torpedoes one hour later. Five battle stars.

- Finding
- Contemporaneous Bureau of Ships damage-summary entry for this hull's loss: 12/7/44, Ormoc/Camotes Sea, Philippines - first suicide plane struck at forecastle deck level just abaft the bridge starboard side (forward smoke pipe and foremast severely damaged; fires); second hit abreast 5-inch gun No.2 at the waterline starboard (engine skidded across platform deck and through port shell plating; flooding and fires); third struck abreast No.2 gun between waterline and forecastle deck port; uncontrolled fires; strafed; sunk by U.S. forces. WDR-51 (Destroyer Report: Gunfire, Bomb and Kamikaze Damage, Preliminary Design Section, BuShips) lists MAHAN (DD364), 1500-ton standard, Kamikaze, Ormoc, 12/7/44, in its analysis of 251 destroyer damage instances.

- Crew aboard at loss (survivors rescued by USS Lamson and USS Walke); casualty figures vary by source - see gaps
- Limitations
- Official damage record documents loss mechanics and fire propagation only - says nothing about materials, insulation, or asbestos aboard. Entry is a data table summary, not a detailed case report (Mahan received no full section in WDR-51). 'Comotes Sea' is OCR of the Ormoc/Camotes area.

- Finding
- Official BuShips photographs document this hull at Mare Island Navy Yard during two yard periods: off the yard 28 April 1942 (consistent with the April 1942 overhaul reported in secondary sources) and off/at the yard 21-24 June 1944 with recent alterations marked (consistent with the spring-1944 overhaul and wartime AA refit). Corroborates Mare Island as a documented repair/overhaul yard for this hull.

[5]CourtListener API v4 sweep: 'USS Mahan' (type=o, 2 hits; type=r, 4 dockets); 'DD-364' (type=o 0; type=r 3); 'Mahan asbestos' (type=o, 31 hits reviewed for ship references) [court_record]
- Locator
- CourtListener v4 /search/ results; Chesher opinion 7324150 footnote 1
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull (DD-364) located in CourtListener. Closest hit: Chesher v. 3M Co., 234 F. Supp. 3d 693 (D.S.C. 2017) - genuine asbestos litigation in which a footnote recites 'Crane admits to supplying valves to the USS Cadmus, USS Fox, USS Mahan, and USS Pratt'; plaintiff's Navy service was 1965-1989, two decades after DD-364 sank in 1944, so the reference resolves to USS Mahan (DDG-42), a Farragut-class guided-missile destroyer in commission 1960-1993. Other 'USS Mahan' opinion/docket hits are collisions: United States v. Coulter (military justice, non-asbestos); Johnson v. 3M (D.S.C., personal-injury docket against firefighting-foam defendants - non-asbestos; Mahan reference unverified); United States v. QTC Medical Services (qui tam); Does 1-7 v. Taliban (judgment enforcement). All three 'DD-364' docket hits (Derichs v. AT&T; Arapahoe Surgery v. CIGNA; US Philips v. Kodak) are unrelated identifier collisions.

- Limitations
- CourtListener covers published opinions and RECAP dockets - not state-court dockets without RECAP coverage, unfiled claims, VA claims, or trust claims. Absence here does not prove no claimant ever alleged exposure aboard DD-364; it means no indexed qualifying case was located. The Chesher footnote is a merits-stage recital of Crane's interrogatory answers (Crane SJ motion denied) but pertains to DDG-42.

[6]DANFS specifications block + Mahan-class technical record (four water-tube boilers - Babcock & Wilcox or Foster Wheeler in class record - two General Electric geared steam turbines, ~46,000 shp, ~600 psi plant); Atlas shipyard dataset checked - United Dry Docks not present [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/class inference: a treaty-era US destroyer built 1934-36 with a high-pressure (roughly 600-psi class figure) four-boiler steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos applications - boiler and turbine insulation, steam-line lagging, valve gaskets and stem packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. The higher-temperature plant is the asbestos-relevant design feature of the class. No hull-specific inventory or specification has been retrieved to confirm applications aboard DD-364 itself.

- United Dry Docks construction trades 1934-36; engineering and repair crews 1936-44; Mare Island yard trades 1942 and 1944
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - NOT a ship-specific finding. The 1944 loss forecloses postwar survey/abatement documentation. Which boiler maker (B&W vs. Foster Wheeler) supplied this hull is unverified. Builder United Dry Docks (Staten Island) is absent from the Atlas yard dataset, so no yard-level industrial-hygiene evidence attaches.

- Finding
- NARA holds a cataloged file unit for this hull: NAID 1903761 'Mahan (DD 364)' within Historic Ship Photographs, compiled by Mare Island Naval Shipyard, covering 1942-1944 (the yard periods documented in ev-03). Separately, NARA RG 19 (Bureau of Ships) General Information Books and Booklets of General Plans are the standard repository for per-vessel material specifications and remain the open archival lead for any hull-level insulation/materials data for DD-364.

[8]Official USS Mahan (DDG-72) Navy website history page (mahan.navy.mil), Wayback capture 2005-02-04, carrying the DANFS-derived history of DD-364 and stating personnel casualties of 'seven crewmembers lost and thirty-one crewmen wounded' [other_primary]

- Finding type

- Finding
- An official US Navy website (the then-active DDG-72 ship's site) restates the DANFS history of this hull and gives loss casualties as seven dead and thirty-one wounded. Secondary sources conflict: NavSource roster work indicates six dead; destroyerhistory.org reads ten killed or missing and thirty-two wounded; Wikipedia's sourced narrative reads one officer and five men missing with thirteen seriously wounded. Carried as an official-source data point; the conflict is logged in gaps.
