Shakedown in Chesapeake Bay; assigned to the 7th Fleet; with LCT-1210 aboard departed New York 18 October 1944 via Guantanamo and the New Hebrides to Seeadler Harbor, Admiralty Islands (unloading 16 December). Took on supplies for a PT base 7 January 1945; joined a convoy to the partially liberated Philippines and operated there four months; put elements of the 41st Army Division ashore at Zamboanga, Mindanao, 10 March; departed Leyte 28 April for Cairns, Australia; transported elements of the 7th Australian Infantry Division to the assault beaches at Balikpapan, Borneo - landings of 1 July and followup resupply missions; returned to the Philippines 27 July. Embarked occupation troops and discharged them at Tokyo 15 September; Japanese occupation duty until 30 November; China-coast duty until 13 May 1946, then departed Tsingtao for the United States; arrived east coast 12 July 1946. Naval Reserve training ship at Bayonne, N.J., later Gulfport, Miss., until December 1949; deactivated at Green Cove Springs, Fla., decommissioned and entered the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. Recommissioned 14 December 1951 (Korea reactivation), Lt. H. W. Childress in command; based at Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, Va., as a Marine Corps training ship operating from Greenland to the Caribbean for 4-1/2 years. Named Maricopa County (LST-938) 1 July 1955; inactivation overhaul at New York; reached Green Cove Springs 2 December 1955; decommissioned 29 February 1956. Towed to Philadelphia Navy Yard late October 1961; stricken from the Navy list 1 June 1962; transferred to Vietnam and commissioned as Da Nang (HQ-501) 12 July 1962. Assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater; participated in the Mindanao Island landings in March and April 1945 and the Balikpapan operation in June and July 1945; occupation duty in the Far East and service in China until mid-May 1946; Naval Reserve training; decommissioned December 1949 and assigned to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet; recommissioned 14 December 1951 as Marine Corps training ship; redesignated Maricopa County (LST-938) after a county in Arizona; decommissioned 29 February 1956; struck from the Navy list 1 June 1962; transferred to the Vietnamese Navy 12 July that year as Da Nang (HQ-501). Yard history per the same page: Bethlehem Hingham Shipyards, Inc. was built in 1941 for destroyer-escort construction with a $35 million Navy investment; 16 ways; managed by Bethlehem Quincy; peak employment over 23,000; closed and liquidated after the war.

- Finding
- An LST-542-class tank landing ship built July-September 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era: GAO documents that asbestos thermal insulation was the Navy's major shipboard use of asbestos until specifications were revised in 1973, and that 'all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables.' As a diesel-powered amphibious ship she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - but era-standard applications aboard a vessel of this type and period were machinery and exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and interior/accommodation fireproofing in crew and troop spaces. Wartime build at a Navy-funded emergency yard places construction inside the period when federal asbestos supply was reserved for shipbuilding.

- Finding
- GAO reviewed the Navy's asbestos worker-protection efforts at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards and documented the program-wide picture: 'although all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables, most ships delivered in the last several years or now under construction have little or no asbestos as thermal insulation, which was the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships.' Product specifications for thermal insulation were changed in 1973 to asbestos-free materials, but asbestos materials already purchased were in some cases installed in ships under construction; the Navy's October 1975 removal policy (replaced damaged insulation only) was modified in 1979 to include selective replacement in high-maintenance areas. The Navy estimated a one-time removal program at $2 billion.

- Finding
- NARA's own research guide confirms that asbestos use in U.S. Navy materiel 1941-1961 'is a frequently requested topic' documented through Record Group 19 (Bureau of Ships) general/confidential/secret correspondence, filed by Navy Filing Manual codes: individual hulls under their hull designation (for this hull, 'LST938'), classes under the namesake hull ('LST542 Class'), types under the type code ('LST'), and private contract builders under 'QM/<yard name>' (here, QM/Bethlehem-Hingham). This is the archival path through which a ship-specific material answer for this hull would run; none of the series is digitized.

Documented for this hull: transferred to the Republic of Vietnam Navy 1962 as RVNS Đà Nẵng (HQ-501); taken over by the Vietnam People's Navy in 1975 and reused as Trần Khánh Dư (HQ-501); used by the transport unit of the 126th Naval Infantry Brigade for a seaborne landing in Cambodia against the Khmer Rouge in 1979; used in the 1988 Spratly (Trường Sa) conflict for transport and sovereignty protection; underwent a restoration/modernization program directed by the General Department of Engineering (Tổng cục Kỹ thuật), described in a QĐND Online article, which restored full operation of the ship and sustained its twin 40mm Bofors mounts including domestic ammunition manufacture; participated in seaborne landing exercises in 2016 and a live-fire amphibious exercise reported August 2017; helicopter deck marked for Mi-8/17 and Ka-28 operations. Báo Nghệ An describes Vietnam's successful restoration of the captured LST type and states HQ-501 is the only surviving hull (sister HQ-505 was lost after the 1988 Johnson South Reef fighting). VPN-era specs per the same coverage: ~3,698 t full displacement, 100 m x 15 m, two GM 12-567 diesels, max ~22 km/h, ~140 naval infantry embarked, 2 landing boats, PT-76/BTR-60PB capacity, eight twin 40mm Bofors.

Captured LSTs could embark ~20 PT-76 amphibious tanks or BTR-50 APCs and doubled as patrol craft; they took part in the 1978 invasion of Cambodia; two participated in the 1988 Johnson South Reef Skirmish with China, where HQ-505 was heavily damaged and sank under tow back to Cam Ranh; the surviving LSTs remained in service alongside the newer Polnocny-class ships, 'with one even surviving into the modern age in VPN service, seeing use to this day' - captioned photograph: 'A Mi-17 helicopter prepares to land on the last of Vietnam's three Landing Ship Tanks Trần Khánh Dư (HQ-501).'

- CORRECTION: the DANFS Maricopa County entry contains three errata against companion sources. (a) The narrative opens 'LST-988 was laid down 14 July 1944' - LST-988 was a different ship; the correct hull is LST-938, which the same paragraph and spec block use everywhere else (verified on the live page via firecrawl and against the 2025-04-27 Wayback capture). (b) It credits 'five battle stars for World War II service' while the parallel DANFS LST-938 entry and NavSource both record two - consistent with the two documented campaigns (Mindanao landings; Balikpapan). Two is the campaign-consistent count carried here. (c) Its spec block classes the ship 'LST-511'; NavSource and standard references class her LST-542. The 'LST-511' label is not a one-off typo - the DANFS spec block of sister Bethlehem-Hingham hull Marinette County (LST-953) carries the same 'cl. LST-511' label, so it is a DANFS labeling convention for this builder group, retained here only as a documented variant. Minor: the two DANFS entries transpose the commissioning CO's initials ('H. W. Limes' vs 'W. H. Limes'; NavSource gives the full name Howard W. Limes).

- Corrects documentary errata, not a material claim about the hull. Does not establish why the M-entry says five stars or LST-511 - recorded as unresolved source conflicts. No asbestos content.
