- DANFS record for this hull: '(DD-100: dp. 1,199; l. 314'5"; b. 31'; dr. 9'2"; s. 33.5 k.; cpl. 133; a. 4 4", 1 3", 12 21" tt.; cl. Wickes)'. Namesake paragraph: Matthew Fontaine Maury, astronomer and hydrographer, born Spotsylvania County, Va., 14 January 1806; first superintendent of the Naval Observatory (1844-1861); 'Pathfinder of the Seas'; died Lexington, Va., 1 February 1873. Laid down 4 May 1918 by Fore River Shipbuilding Co., Quincy, Mass.; launched 4 July 1918, sponsored by Miss Anna Hamlin; commissioned 23 September 1918, Lt. Comdr. J. H. Newton in command. Departed New York 12 November 1918 escorting a France-bound convoy; detached off the Azores; Gibraltar 26 November; western Mediterranean; reported to the Adriatic Detachment at Venice 18 February 1919 for five months of 'umpiring' duty (Adriatic mine clearance, Balkan food distribution, refugee support). Returned New York 25 July 1919; Philadelphia overhaul until 24 April 1920; redesignated DM-5, light minelayer, 17 July 1920; reported to Mine Squadron 1 at Gloucester, Mass., 23 July 1921; seven years east-coast cruising with winter Caribbean fleet problems (1925 excepted - Pacific problem). Winter 1929 off Cuba; summer Gulf of Mexico; moored Philadelphia 30 September 1929; decommissioned 19 March 1930; struck from the Naval Register 22 October; sold 17 January 1931 to Boston Iron & Metal Co., Baltimore, Md.; scrapped 1 May 1934.

- Finding
- NavSource build and minelayer-configuration record for this hull: Wickes class destroyer ('Little' group - 'Built to a different set of plans (Bethlehem) than the wickes (Bath)') / Stribling-class light minelayer. Laid down 4 May 1918 at Fore River Shipbuilding, Quincy (with the note 'Ships Data, U.S. Naval Vessels lists keel laid 26 February 1918'); builder's hull no. 306 per the NH 43023 photo caption (Israel hull 304 and Maury hull 306 on the Fore River ways, 20 June 1918). Launched 4 July 1918; commissioned USS Maury, Destroyer No. 100, 23 September 1918 at Boston Navy Yard; reclassified light minelayer DM-5, 17 July 1920; decommissioned 19 March 1930 at Philadelphia and berthed there until sale; struck 26 October 1930 (DM-5 page - DANFS reads 22 October; DD-100 index page also reads October 22); sold for scrap 17 January 1931 to Boston Iron & Metal Co., Baltimore. DM-5 specifications block: displacement 1,191 t (1921: 1,189 t); 314'4.5" x 30'11.25" x 9'2"; 34 kt (1921: 34.59 kt); complement 103 (1921: 122); armament four 4"/50 mounts, two 1-pounders, one depth-charge projector, two depth-charge tracks (1921: one 3"/23 replaces the 1-pounders) - torpedo tubes removed in conversion. Propulsion: four White-Foster boilers, two 12,100-shp Parsons turbines, two shafts (1921 Ships Data: four Yarrow boilers, two 26,890-shp Curtis geared turbines, two shafts).

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer-maintained archive transcribing official records (spec block derives from Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels). Struck-date conflict (26 October vs DANFS 22 October), laid-down conflict (26 February vs DANFS 4 May), and the White-Foster/Parsons vs Yarrow/Curtis machinery discrepancy are carried in gaps, not silently reconciled. Asbestos content is not addressed by these records.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Minelayer-conversion context naming this hull: on 17 July 1920, fourteen flush-deckers - Stribling, Murray, Israel, Luce, Maury, Lansdale and Mahan (ex-DDs 96-102), Hart, Ingraham and Ludlow (ex-DDs 110-112), and Burns, Anthony, Sproston and Rizal (ex-DDs 171-174) - were reclassified DMs 1-14, their torpedo tubes replaced with tracks carrying approximately 80 mines; work was completed during the following year. 'Six of these ships lasted only until 1930, when they were scrapped' - Maury (decommissioned March 1930, sold January 1931) is within that cohort. The foundation's interwar history documents the 1929 finding that flush-deckers with Yarrow boilers (60 destroyers plus six destroyer-minelayers in commission) had reached the end of their useful life, with 56 Yarrow-boiler ships broken up in 1930-31 - consistent with NavSource's 1921 spec block listing four Yarrow boilers for this hull.

- Limitations
- Destroyer History Foundation is a nonprofit naval-history archive summarizing Alden, Friedman, Roscoe, DANFS/NHHC, and Nevitt - not itself an official record. The Yarrow-boiler linkage for this hull rests on NavSource's 1921 spec line, not a ship-specific survey; treat as contextual explanation of the early disposal, not documented machinery fact.

- Finding
- Era inference: peer-reviewed reviews of U.S. Navy asbestos practice document shipboard asbestos thermal insulation in use from the 1880s through the 1950s, spanning this hull's entire 1918-1930 service life and her 1920-21 minelayer conversion. A flush-deck destroyer built 1918 with a four-boiler, two-shaft geared-turbine steam plant (White-Foster [sic] boilers/Parsons turbines as built per NavSource; Yarrow boilers/Curtis geared turbines per the 1921 Ships Data block) would have carried period-standard asbestos-containing boiler and steam-line insulation, turbine lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing. Builder Fore River Shipbuilding Co. (Bethlehem, Quincy) is documented in the Atlas yard dataset as a tier-3 yard with asbestos products across boilers, pipes, turbines, fireproofing materials, gaskets, packing, and electrical components.

- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The cited reviews are state-of-the-science literature covering era practice and do not name this hull; the Fore River yard's flagship asbestos findings in the dataset postdate this hull's construction by decades. No insulation specification, survey, or material test for this hull was located; nothing quantifies material or establishes any individual's exposure.

- Finding
- CourtListener litigation sweep for this hull: exact-name 'USS Maury' returns zero opinion hits and a single docket hit - United States v. QTC Medical Services, Inc., No. 2:14-cv-08961 (C.D. Cal., False Claims Act, filed 2014, terminated 2019), a qui-tam medical-exam-contractor case in which the string appears in indexed docket text unrelated to asbestos or vessel exposure - classified other-litigation/name collision, non-qualifying. 'DD-100' returns 4 opinion hits, all the same Ohio Supreme Court attorney-discipline matter (Mahoning County Bar Assn. v. Alexander, docket 'DD-100'/'1970-DD0100', 1997) - docket-designator collisions; and 66 docket hits, all exhibit/document-numbering collisions (sealed 'Exhibit DD-100' strings in civil-rights, criminal, pharmaceutical-MDL, and bankruptcy dockets) - none referencing a vessel. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming DD-100/DM-5 was located in completed queries. Plausible collision sources for any future hit are the same-name hulls: USS Maury (DD-401, Gridley class, in commission 1938-1946) and USS/USNS Maury (AGS-16/T-AGS-16, in service 1958-1994).

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no hull survey exists or is feasible (the hull was scrapped in 1934 and does not exist), no abatement or hazmat disclosure exists, and no qualifying asbestos case names DD-100/DM-5. The ship was scrapped four decades before the asbestos-litigation era and was never preserved, so the usual exposure-record pathways (museum hazmat disclosures, veteran litigation, abatement contracts) do not exist for it.
