    Finding
Mazapeta (YT-181), a Woban-class tug, was laid down by Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, Florida, 7 August 1942; launched 8 May 1943; and placed in service 12 August 1943. Initially assigned to the 3d Naval District, she transferred in 1944 to the 12th Naval District, headquartered at San Francisco. DANFS reports a May 1947–September 1950 reserve/out-of-service interval at Mare Island and otherwise miscellaneous tugging service for the 12th Naval District into 1969. The same entry records reclassification as YTB-181 on 15 May 1944 and YTM-181 in February 1962.

    Population
Gibbs Gas Engine Co. construction trades (1942–43); Navy district-tug crew and maintenance personnel (1943–at least 1969)
    Limitations
This is ship-specific operational history, not an asbestos or material record. It does not identify propulsion machinery, insulation, products, repair periods, individual exposure, quantity, or present-day condition. The live canonical URL was verified through web search on 2026-10-05; direct scripted retrieval returned HTTP 404, a documented access-path limitation.

    Finding type
    gov_survey
    Finding
GAO’s Navy asbestos-worker-protection report is Navy-wide program context for the era of this hull’s construction and service. It supports prioritizing asbestos research for Navy vessels and Navy maritime workforces, but does not name Mazapeta or describe any material on her.

    1979 report; Mazapeta construction/service era 1942–1969
    Population
Navy workers covered by the GAO program review
    Limitations
Program-level context only: this report cannot establish asbestos aboard this hull, a product, quantity, disturbance event, individual exposure, causation, or legal eligibility. The live GAO product URL was verified 2026-10-05 but automated access returned HTTP 403, so its full text was not relied on for a hull-specific assertion.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
NAVSEA’s inactive-ship history table lists YTB-0181 as MAZAPETA and records final disposition as ‘UNK’; its removal-date field is blank.

    Limitations
This is a ship-specific registry-style lead for unresolved disposition only. It does not provide a service chronology, material information, an asbestos finding, or proof that the vessel remained in Navy ownership at the report date.

  5. [5]Authenticated CourtListener API v4 base-query sweep through /Users/charlesfletcher/devin-prompts/cl-auth-search.py [court_record]
    Locator
    search_ledger rows sl-uss-mazapeta-yt181-05 through -08
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
The completed YT-181 docket base query returned two non-qualifying name/search collisions: a Chapter 13 bankruptcy (Carlos Luis Ugalde, Bankr. S.D. Fla., 10-38237) and In re Vioxx Products Liability Litigation (E.D. La., 2:05-md-01657). Neither names Mazapeta or alleges asbestos exposure. The other three required base queries were submitted through the authenticated helper but their results could not be collected before the shared fleet limiter/interface window ended; no asbestos-qualified variants were run because no completed base query overflowed 20 results.

    Limitations
This is an incomplete litigation sweep, not proof of no litigation or no exposure. The two returned dockets are not qualifying asbestos litigation and provide no hull evidence. Pending helper-query results must be reviewed before asserting a comprehensive CourtListener negative.
