    Finding
DANFS record for this hull: laid down 1 May 1941 at Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp., Seattle, Wash.; launched 30 April 1942 (sponsor Mrs. Reed Knox, granddaughter of Comdr. Roderick S. McCook); commissioned 15 March 1943. Atlantic convoy escort from June 1943 (Casablanca, United Kingdom, coastal); COTCLANT destroyer-crew training Dec 1943-Jan 1944; Trinidad shakedown escort with new carrier Wasp Jan-Feb 1944 (transcription prints 'CV-8' - carried in gaps). Damaged in a 28 May 1944 air raid at Weymouth Roads (radar, sound gear, rangefinder, main battery director; five guns disabled; bridge steering lost; no casualties; repaired by tender Melville AD-2). Normandy 6 June 1944: bombardment of Pointe du Hoc-Vierville-sur-Mer from 0320, assigned targets neutralized by 0616; in invasion area to 14 July. Operation Anvil Aug-Sep 1944: screening south of Toulon, 35 days of gunfire support. Six transatlantic convoy round trips by 24 May 1945, then Philadelphia Navy Yard for destroyer-minesweeper conversion; reclassified DMS-36 on 30 May; conversion completed 12 July. Pacific: Okinawa 28 Sep 1945; Yellow Sea minesweeping with MinRon 1 - cut 77 of 500 mines, 23 Oct-15 Nov; Sasebo duty from 17 Nov; typhoon damage on a Wakayama courier run 14 Dec; repairs at Sasebo; Inland Sea swept-channel checks Feb 1946; Shanghai; San Francisco 31 Mar 1946. Overhaul at Mare Island Naval Shipyard; San Diego from 14 Jan 1947 (Underwater Training Unit); Marshalls-Marianas cruise Jul-Sep 1947. Deactivation began Jan 1949; decommissioned 27 May 1949 to Pacific Reserve Fleet, San Diego; later berthed at Bremerton; reclassified DD-496 15 Jul 1955; struck 15 Jan 1972; sold 27 Aug 1973. Three WWII battle stars.

    Limitations
DANFS documents construction, service history, yard periods, and specifications - not materials or asbestos content. The strike/sale sentence is a bracketed post-publication update to the 1969-era entry. Transcription artifact noted for the Wasp hull number (printed 'CV-8'; the carrier on shakedown in Jan-Feb 1944 was CV-18). Finding
NavSource archive record for this hull: laid down as 'Farley' 1 May 1941 at Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding, Seattle WA (yard hull YN 4); renamed 'McCook' by CNO letter dated 28 November 1941 (letter image hosted on the page); General Electric turbines, 50,000 shp, two screws; reclassified High Speed Minesweeper DMS-36 30 May 1945; decommissioned 27 May 1949 at San Diego into Pacific Reserve Fleet, San Diego Group; transferred to Pacific Reserve Fleet, Bremerton Group; reclassified DD-496 15 July 1955; struck from the Navy Register 15 January 1972; sold 27 August 1973 and broken up for scrap. Photo captions include the ship alongside USS Wasp (CV-18), consistent with the Jan-Feb 1944 shakedown escort.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-maintained archive of official USN records and photographs - the rename rests on a scanned CNO letter (a primary document), while tabular data are compilations. 'Crew 208' listed there conflicts with the DANFS complement figure of 276 - carried in gaps. navsource.org did not respond to automated fetch at access time; the identical navsource.net mirror was retrieved.

    Finding
Era/design inference for this hull: a Gleaves-class destroyer built 1941-43 with four superheated Babcock & Wilcox boilers (class machinery data: 575 psi/700 deg F per BuShips Ships' Data 1945) and geared steam turbines would have carried the period-standard asbestos-insulated fit - boiler casing and fireroom insulation, steam-line and turbine lagging, valve/flange gaskets and packing, fireproofing, deck tile, accommodation insulation. Documented ship-specific yard periods that would have disturbed such material: the 24 May-12 Jul 1945 destroyer-minesweeper conversion at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard (Atlas tier-3 yard: named ACM products incl. pipe covering, block insulation, gaskets and packing documented in appellate litigation product-ID records and a 1989 OSHA inspection with bulk-sample results) and the 1946 Mare Island Naval Shipyard overhaul (Atlas tier-2 yard with ACM and litigation documentation).

    Population
Seattle-Tacoma construction trades 1941-43; crew 1943-49; Philadelphia NSY and Mare Island yard workers during documented 1945/1946 yard periods
    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. No source documents which products were installed aboard or removed from DD-496/DMS-36; the yard-level records document the yards' asbestos environment, not this ship's materials. Establishes no quantities and no individual exposure.

    Finding
Builder-yard regulatory context: the Seattle yard where DD-496 was built began as the Todd Dry Docks facility on Harbor Island (opened 1918), was expanded from October 1940 under a Navy destroyer contract, operated during this hull's construction as Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp., and was renamed Todd Pacific Shipyards in June 1944 (UW/MOHAI company-history caption: 'The yard ultimately completed 45 destroyers'). The site lies within the Harbor Island (Lead) Superfund site, EPA-listed in 1983; the 1996 Record of Decision for the Shipyard Sediment Operable Unit documents shipyard-derived sediment contamination - copper, lead, mercury, zinc, and tributyltin from sandblasting and ship work - at the Todd and Lockheed yards.

Shipyard workforce at the Harbor Island yard (1940s onward)
    Limitations
Yard-site environmental documentation, not hull evidence: the ROD's enumerated contaminants are metals and organotin in sediment - it does not list asbestos and says nothing about materials aboard any vessel built there. Establishes only that the builder site is a long-documented industrial-contamination area.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DD-496/DMS-36: no hull ACM survey, no abatement or hazmat disclosure, and no qualifying asbestos case naming this hull were found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). Authenticated CourtListener API v4 sweep completed 2026-09-27 across opinion and RECAP docket indexes: 'USS McCook' opinions 0 hits and dockets 0 hits; 'McCook' + 'DD-496' 0; 'DD-496' opinions 0 and dockets 1 (Andrews v. D'Souza, N.D. Ga. 2022 - identifier collision in a non-naval docket); 'DMS-36' 0; 'aboard the McCook' 0; 'McCook' + asbestos returned 11 opinions and 140 dockets, all name collisions - plaintiff/defendant surnames (incl. asbestos plaintiff McCook v. A.R. Wilfley & Sons, E.D. Pa. 2009), the Village of McCook, Illinois, and In re McCook Metals LLC bankruptcy citations (verified by full-text review of Paloian v. LaSalle Bank, N.D. Ill. Bankr. 2013). No opinion or docket naming the vessel exists in the index. The hull was sold and broken up in 1973 - no surviving museum/landmark documentation pathway exists, and no present-day survey is possible.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941-43 steam destroyer is era-consistent with asbestos use, but that remains inference. Search coverage is limited to CourtListener-indexed opinions and RECAP docket text; non-indexed dockets, state-court filings outside RECAP, and un-digitized records are outside coverage. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility for anyone who served aboard or worked on this hull.
