[3]HyperWar 'Ships of the U.S. Navy 1940-1945' DD-677 technical block ('High-pressure super-heated boilers, geared turbines with twin screws, 60,000 h.p.'; built at Federal, Kearny; commissioned 19 November 1943) + Fletcher-class design data (navypedia class page; BuShips Ships' Data 1945 per class profile) + Atlas shipyard dataset, Federal Shipbuilding-Kearny record (incl. Owens-Illinois industrial-health survey of the yard, Aug. 30 - Sep. 2, 1944) [other_primary]
- Locator
- HyperWar DD-677 page technical block; navypedia us_dd_fletcher.htm specs block; shipyards.json record 'federal-shipbuilding-kearny'
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/yard inference: a WWII Fletcher-class destroyer with a four-boiler (Babcock & Wilcox) 60,000-shp geared-steam-turbine plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation, lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing; the builder yard (Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock, Kearny) is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (evidence_tier 2) - including a 1944 Owens-Illinois industrial-health survey of the yard documenting insulator work with Johns-Manville Superex asbestos pipe covering and boiler insulation in confined spaces during the wartime production period.

- Population
- Federal Shipbuilding construction trades 1943; crew 1943-1963
- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The 1944 yard survey (Aug. 30 - Sep. 2, 1944) postdates this hull's commissioning (19 November 1943) and Pacific departure (25 January 1944); it documents yard practice in the same era and yard, not materials installed aboard DD-677. Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure.

[4]CourtListener API v4 sweep: 'USS McDermut' (type=o) = 0 results; 'DD-677' (type=o) = 0 results; 'McDermut' (type=o) = 4 hits, all 19th-century surname collisions; 'USS McDermut' (type=r) = 0 results; 'DD-677' (type=r) = 6 dockets, all token collisions [court_record]
- Locator
- CourtListener search results, 'USS McDermut' / 'McDermut' / 'DD-677' query set (type=o and type=r)
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Verified name collisions only: no CourtListener record names this hull. The four bare-'McDermut' opinion hits are 19th-century cases on a party surname (Beck v. Burdett, N.Y. Ch. 1829; Bloomfield v. Snowden, N.Y. Ch. 1831; Hart v. Deamer, N.Y. Sup. Ct. 1831; Taylor v. Taylor, Minn. 1865). The six 'DD-677' docket hits are token collisions unrelated to the destroyer: Color Kinetics v. TIR Systems (D. Mass. patent, 1:03-cv-12491); Harris, Clay, and Fisher v. Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya (D.D.C. terrorism personal-injury, 1:06-cv-00732 / 1:06-cv-00707 / 1:05-cv-02454); In re Global Brokerage/FXCM securities (S.D.N.Y., 1:17-cv-00916); NYT v. Microsoft (S.D.N.Y. copyright, 1:23-cv-11195). None is asbestos litigation and none names the ship.

- Limitations
- Collision classification rests on indexed metadata (cause/nature-of-suit, parties) - underlying docket documents were not retrieved; none of the six 'DD-677' dockets is plausibly a ship-related or asbestos matter. The bare-'McDermut' docket-type query remained rate-limited (HTTP 429, fleet pacing) at session end after repeated attempts; the opinion-type sweep and both exact-name and hull-number docket queries completed.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Unretrieved primary records for this hull: NARA Record Group 24 deck logs (Entry 118, National Archives Identifier 581208) span the ship's commissioned service 1943-1963; WWII war diaries are held in RG 38 (College Park); RG 19 Bureau of Ships 'General Information Books' hold per-vessel material specifications and are the strongest hull-level insulation lead. Disposition-phase records for the 1966 sale to National Metal & Steel Corp., Terminal Island, would sit with MARAD/disposal files or the scrapping firm's successors.

- Limitations
- Archival pointer only - none of these records was retrieved or read. Deck logs and war diaries document operations and muster, not materials content; the BuShips specifications are the lead most likely to state hull-level insulation content. National Archives Catalog search API requires a key and was not queried.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DD-677: no hull ACM survey, no abatement contract, no hazmat or disposal disclosure (hull scrapped February 1966 at National Metal & Steel, Terminal Island - no museum or memorial record exists), and no qualifying asbestos litigation names this hull; all CourtListener hits classify as name or token collisions.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-standard applications are documented at class/era level (ev-uss-mcdermut-dd677-02). Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. The bare-'McDermut' docket sweep was rate-limited at session end; residual coverage gap logged in gaps.
