DANFS record for this hull: Clemson-class destroyer, displacement 1,190, length 314'5", beam 31'8", draft 9'3", speed 35 kts, complement 120, armament 4x4", 2x3", 12x21" torpedo tubes. Laid down 20 April 1918 by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., Quincy, Mass.; launched 22 September 1918, sponsored by Mrs. Charles M. Howe; commissioned 5 April 1919, Comdr. R. B. Coffey in command. After shakedown off the Massachusetts coast, assigned to the Pacific Fleet; placed in reserve at San Diego October 1919 and decommissioned June 1922; recommissioned 18 December 1939, overhauled and fitted out, steamed to the east coast; decommissioned as a U.S. Navy ship at Halifax, Nova Scotia, 8 October 1940 and commissioned in the Royal Navy the same day as Bradford (H-72) under the destroyers-for-bases agreement. As Bradford she performed Atlantic escort duty including convoys to North Africa for Operation Torch, 1941-1943; declared no longer fit for ocean escort work 3 May 1943 and ordered decommissioned at Devonport, where she served as an accommodations ship for the remainder of the war; scrapped at Troon 19 June 1946.

    Limitations
DANFS documents construction, service history, and disposal - not materials or asbestos content. It gives no day for the June 1922 decommissioning and no strike date; both are carried in gaps. Mirror transcription cited because live NHHC DANFS pages return 404.

    Finding
The Navy Department's Navy Filing Manual, 4th edition (issued over the Secretary of the Navy's signature 27 August 1941), lists 'DD264 McLanahan (stricken)' in its destroyer name-title group - a contemporaneous official record that this hull had been struck from the Navy list no later than August 1941, within a year of her October 1940 transfer to the Royal Navy.

Establishes stricken status as of the manual's 27 August 1941 issuance but not the exact strike date. Secondary sources give 8 January 1941 (destroyers.org disposition list) and 8 January 1942 (NavSource, NavalCoverMuseum); the 1942 date is inconsistent with this primary record, and 1941-01-08 is carried as the best-supported date with the conflict logged in gaps.

Two destroyers were named for him - this hull (DD-264) and DD-615.

    Finding
Primary-program documentation of the transfer context: by agreement executed 2 September 1940 the United States acquired 99-year base leases in British possessions in exchange for '50 of our over-age destroyers' (President's message to Congress, 3 September 1940); the Navy Department's official base-construction history confirms Britain received fifty over-age destroyers under the agreement signed 2 September 1940. This hull was one of the fifty, transferred at Halifax on 8 October 1940 (per DANFS, ev-01).

    Finding
Era/class inference: a Clemson-class destroyer built 1918-19 at a Bethlehem yard with the class-standard four-boiler, geared-steam-turbine, twin-screw plant would have carried period-standard asbestos materials - magnesia-asbestos block and sectional lagging on boilers and steam lines, asbestos cloth, sheet gaskets and packing at flanges and machinery joints, and asbestos-bearing fireproofing in machinery spaces. The builder's corporate-level Atlas yard record documents these product types (85% magnesia block, Marinite board, aircell pipe covering, asbestos lagging, gaskets and packing) at Bethlehem shipbuilding operations of the period generally.

Bethlehem Squantum construction trades 1918-19; ship's company 1919-45 (era exposure pathway only)
    Limitations
Class/era and builder-corporate inference only - no hull-specific specification, General Information Book, survey, or work record was located for DD-264. The yard dataset's product documentation is weighted to Bethlehem's Sparrows Point/Baltimore operations; the Squantum Victory Destroyer Plant is the specific build site and has no separate asbestos record in the dataset. Does not establish asbestos content aboard this hull, quantity, or exposure to any individual.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
Ship-specific primary records that would establish machinery fit and any material specifications for this hull exist in principle - the Navy's own Ships' Data Books (annual GPO editions, e.g. 1920-1922 covering DD-264's first commission) carry per-hull machinery entries, and NARA RG 19 General Information Books carry per-vessel construction/material specifications; RN-period logs for HMS Bradford are in UK National Archives ADM 53. None were retrievable in usable text form in this session: the located Ships' Data scan (shipscribe SDB1922, Google Books source) is image-only with no text layer, and the NARA/TNA records are undigitized.

    Finding
CourtListener v4 sweep returned no qualifying litigation naming this hull. Exact-name "USS McLanahan": zero opinions (type=o), zero dockets/RECAP entries (type=r). Hull number "DD-264": zero opinions; three docket hits, all unrelated string collisions (Garcia v. Walmart D.N.J. 2017; Casumpang v. Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar D. Haw. 2012; United States v. Prive M.D. Fla. 2014 - 'DD-264' matching docket/exhibit text, none asbestos or vessel-related). Bare-surname "McLanahan": 897 opinions and 342 dockets; returned-page review classifies every hit as a person/corporation surname collision (e.g., McLanahan v. Keith probate series; McLanahan Crushed Stone; Eagle Iron Works v. McLanahan Corp.; E.D. Wash. pro se filer; bankruptcy cases) - zero asbestos, Navy, or vessel hits. "HMS Bradford" variant queries were deferred by the fleet-wide pacing limiter.

Complete zero/collision-only results on both indexes for exact name and hull number plus first-page review of both bare-surname sweeps - coverage satisfies the exact-name AND hull-number requirement. Deferred: 'HMS Bradford' variants (RN service name; any US asbestos case naming this hull would almost certainly index under 'USS McLanahan'/'McLanahan', both covered). Deep pagination of the 897-opinion surname result was not performed - hits are relevance-ranked and page one showed only surname cases.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, material specification, museum or custodian hazmat disclosure, or official document naming asbestos aboard USS McLanahan (DD-264) / HMS Bradford (H-72) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was broken up at Troon in 1946, predating modern asbestos-survey regimes; no preservation-era documentation exists because nothing of the ship survives.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1918-19 steam destroyer with a four-boiler plant is consistent with period-standard asbestos use, and the ship's 1946 UK scrapping predates any documentation regime that would have recorded it. Does not establish that asbestos was or was not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
