- DANFS record for this hull: laid down 30 June 1943 by Federal Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Kearny, N.J.; launched 14 November 1943; sponsored by Mrs. F. V. McNair, Jr.; commissioned 30 December 1943, Comdr. M. L. McCullough, Jr. in command. Pacific service with DesRon 54 from June 1944 (Saipan, Tinian, Palaus, Leyte Gulf - covering the gulf entrance while DesRon 54 sisters made the Surigao Strait night torpedo attack, Lingayen Gulf, Iwo Jima carrier strikes incl. escorting the damaged Saratoga, Okinawa, Paramushiro bombardment 12 August 1945); occupation duty Aomori-Ominato; decommissioned San Diego 28 May 1946. Recommissioned 6 July 1951; Atlantic Fleet/Newport; Korea gunfire support and 7th Fleet carrier screen 1952-53 (world cruise out Panama, back Suez, Newport 11 April 1953); Middle East 1956; Mediterranean/Red Sea 1957 (DesDiv 202); Lebanon patrol July-August 1958; 6th Fleet 1959; then Naval Reserve training ship, 4th Naval District, Philadelphia; reserve crew recalled during the August 1961 Berlin crisis; final northern-European deployment from mid-February 1962; Philadelphia Navy Yard pre-inactivation overhaul August 1963; decommissioned 30 December 1963, Philadelphia Group, Atlantic Reserve Fleet. Eight WWII and two Korean battle stars.

- Population
- Federal Shipbuilding construction trades 1943; wartime and postwar crew (design complement 319)
- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The specifications block gives complement 319 (DANFS design figure; wartime complements grew with armament additions per class documentation). Live NHHC page 404s - verbatim Wayback capture of the NHHC page cited; a hazegray transcription mirror carries OCR errors ('DesRon 34' for DesRon 54, '11143' for 1943, '1931' for 1951) and was not relied on where it diverges.

- Finding
- Disposition record for this hull: stricken from the Naval Vessel Register 1 December 1974; sold 10 June 1976 and broken up for scrap - NavSource's compiled entry gives the buyer as Ship's Inc., Camden, N.J. NVR itself no longer carries a DD-679 detail page because vessels disposed before 1987 are not yet loaded into the online register (site notice). Hull leaves the record at scrapping - no museum, transfer, or surviving-structure phase.

- Population
- Scrapping workers, Camden NJ, 1976
- Limitations
- Stricken date corroborated across DANFS-era summaries and secondary compilations; the 1976 buyer identity rests on NavSource's volunteer compilation (credible but secondary). NVR detail-page absence is a coverage artifact, not evidence about the hull. No disposal-phase hazmat or survey record located.

- Finding
- Era/yard inference: a WWII Fletcher-class destroyer with a four-Babcock-&-Wilcox-boiler, 60,000-shp geared-steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation - boiler and steam-line lagging, turbine lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. The builder yard is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset: an Owens-Illinois industrial-health survey of Federal Shipbuilding, Kearny (Aug. 30-Sep. 2, 1944) recorded insulators cutting and fitting asbestos pipe covering (Johns-Manville Superex) and boiler insulation in confined spaces during the same wartime construction program that built this hull.

- 1943-1946 (construction/active era); survey 1944-08/09
- Population
- Federal Shipbuilding construction trades 1943-44; crew 1943-63
- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The 1944 yard survey postdates this hull's 30 December 1943 commissioning and March 1944 departure by roughly eight months: it documents Kearny yard practice during the same production program, not materials installed aboard DD-679. Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure. NARA RG19 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications are the archival lead and were not retrieved.

- Finding
- Hull-specific primary records exist at NARA: a May 1945 war diary for USS McNair (NAID 140045333, covering the Okinawa period) is indexed in the National Archives Catalog, and the ship's deck logs fall within RG 24/NAID 594258 (1941-1978 series, digitization in progress). These are the documentary trail for yard periods, repair availabilities, and maintenance events that would bear on material disturbance aboard this hull.

- Crew and yard workers named in logs if retrieved
- Limitations
- Archival lead only - the war diary and deck logs are operational records; they may log yard availabilities and repair periods but are not expected to state asbestos content. Not retrieved; no asbestos finding is drawn from them.

[6]Batch-3654 search ledger (this record): CourtListener API v4 exact-name and hull-number sweeps (type=o and type=r); NHHC/DANFS; NARA catalog; Atlas shipyard dataset; secondary compilations checked for leads only [court_record]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-mcnair-dd679-01 through sl-uss-mcnair-dd679-11
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DD-679: CourtListener returned zero opinion and zero docket results for the exact name 'USS McNair', zero opinion results for hull number 'DD-679', and the two docket hits for 'DD-679' are name collisions - the string appears as an exhibit/document reference in the Deepwater Horizon MDL-2179 exhibit lists (E.D. La.) and inside a 2026 D.N.J. civil-rights complaint (Hexa Builders v. Monroe Twp.), neither asbestos litigation and neither referencing this hull. No ACM survey, abatement contract, or hazmat disclosure exists in the sources searched (hull scrapped 1976 - no museum or owner disclosure channel). Ship-name collision risk noted and checked: 'General Lesley J. McNair' was a separate WWII transport; no bare 'McNair' litigation reference to resolve remained after the exact-name sweeps returned empty.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943 steam destroyer would have carried era-standard insulation per the class/era row. Does not establish or defeat any individual claim of exposure or legal eligibility. CourtListener sweeps run under fleet pacing on 2026-09-27; all subqueries completed after spaced retries (see search ledger).
