    Finding
DANFS entry for Mercedes (YT-108), dimensions 'l. 53'6"; b. 9'2"; dr. 3'10"', namesake 'a former Spanish name retained': 'Mercedes (YT-108), a wooden yard tug, was built by the Spanish in the Philippines; captured by the Navy at Cavite in May 1898; turned over to customs authorities shortly after the Spanish-American War; and returned to the Navy 15 November 1902. For the next 40 years, Mercedes was assigned to the 16th Naval District, operating in and around the naval stations at Cavite and Olongapo in the Philippines, at times serving as yard ferry, but most often serving ships of the Asiatic Fleet as a tugboat. Mercedes was sunk by friendly forces to prevent her capture by the Japanese during their attack on Cavite 2 January 1942.'

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The Naval Historical Center's published Official Chronology of the U.S. Navy in World War II (Cressman, 2000) records 'Manila and Cavite, P.I., fall to the Japanese' under 2 January 1942, and under its 6 May 1942 entry (fall of Corregidor) enumerates 'harbor tugs Banaag (YT-104), Iona (YT-107), and Mercedes (YT-108)' in a lengthy list of district patrol craft, lighters, derricks, ferry launches, barges, and pontoons 'lost to Japanese occupation of the Philippines.' This is an official Navy history naming this hull by hull number among the Philippine district-craft losses.

Official Naval Historical Center publication corroborating this hull's loss in the Philippine campaign. The chronology lists YT-108 under the 6 May 1942 catch-all enumeration of craft lost across the whole campaign, not as a claim she survived until May - DANFS's 2 January 1942 scuttle date is adopted as controlling (see gaps). The chronology records no asbestos, materials, or exposure information. Cited via the HyperWar/ibiblio transcription; the NHHC's own hosted chronology URL returned HTTP 404 on 2026-10-05.

Ribbons: American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Defense Medal. Specifications: displacement unknown; length 53'6"; beam 9'2"; draft 3'10"; speed unknown; complement unknown; armament unknown; propulsion 'steam, single screw.' NavSource is a volunteer photo-archive compilation, not a government registry; its timeline agrees with DANFS on all overlapping facts and adds the YT-108 designation date, campaign dates, ribbons, and spec block. Speed, displacement, complement, and armament are all 'unknown' in its own spec table - no figures are asserted anywhere in this record. No asbestos or materials content; supports no asbestos claim.

This independently corroborates the 1898 Cavite capture and places this hull in the YT-102-108 administrative group of late-acquired 1898-1911 yard tugs.

Group-level note naming this hull; corroborates the 1898 capture and the prize-tug grouping. Shipscribe's YT data-table pages currently cover YT 1-101 and 117+ only - no per-hull data row for YT-108 exists on the site yet, so no specs are taken from it. No asbestos or materials content.

The Navy Filing Manual (1941), an official U.S. Navy nomenclature/reference document, lists 'YT108 Mercedes' in its district-craft (YA-YY) hull list without the '(stricken)' annotation applied to deleted hulls in the same list - consistent with the tug still being on the Naval Register as of the manual's compilation, corroborating her YT-108 designation and in-service status on the eve of the war.

Primary Navy document corroborating hull designation and register status circa 1941; the manual's annotation convention (a '(stricken)' tag on deleted hulls) supports but does not prove an exact status date - supplement printings could lag events. Finding
Class/era inference only: Mercedes was a wooden-hulled, steam-powered yard tug of pre-1898 Spanish Philippine construction, in continuous Navy yard service at Cavite Navy Yard through 2 January 1942 - a steam plant and era in which boiler lagging, steam-pipe covering, machinery gaskets, and packing were commonly asbestos-containing. No insulation survey, repair work order, or materials list naming this hull was located.

Cavite Navy Yard station complement and transient tug crews (1902-1942)
    Limitations
Era inference only - this is a weaker inference than for most hulls in the dataset: she was built under Spanish colonial-era Philippine yard practice (not U.S. Navy specification), her exact construction date is unknown, and steam auxiliaries of her small size carried far less lagged surface than warships. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials, quantity, or condition. The hull was lost in 1942; no physical survey is possible. Does not establish individual exposure or causation.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no insulation survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS Mercedes (YT-108) was found in the public sources searched. All four required CourtListener base queries were run: every one overflowed its 20-result page on pure name/alphanumeric-collision noise ('Mercedes' 13,268 opinion and 67,303 docket hits - criminal defendants, civil parties, debtors, and Mercedes-Benz automotive litigation; 'YT-108' 132 opinion and 10,872 docket hits - unrelated cases where the string matches a docket number, exhibit, or citation substring). All four triggered asbestos-qualified variants were then run: 'Mercedes' asbestos returned 182 opinion hits (genuine asbestos cases with incidental 'Mercedes' text matches plus Mercedes-Benz matters) and 1,574 docket hits (overwhelmingly Mercedes-Benz automotive dockets) - none vessel-related; 'YT-108' asbestos returned 9 opinion hits (Texas appellate construction/corporate cases and one Second Circuit campaign-finance case, all incidental text co-occurrences) and 1,172 docket hits (major asbestos-defendant dockets including MDL-875, Federal-Mogul, W.R. Grace, Kaiser Gypsum, and J&J talc where 'YT-108' is an incidental substring match) - none vessel-related. General web sweeps surfaced no law-firm or news source naming this specific hull in an asbestos context.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a pre-1898 steam tug in 40 years of yard service is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials having been present or applied during upkeep. Does not establish presence or absence, quantity, or any individual's exposure or legal eligibility. The hull was lost in 1942, so no physical survey is possible.

Archival leads (not retrieved - require research-room or reproduction order; no spend authorized): NARA RG 181 (Records of Naval Districts and Shore Establishments) holds 16th Naval District records including Cavite Navy Yard material; the Commandant's correspondence, station logs, and the yard's craft/ferry records are the plausible repository for any Mercedes-specific work, crew, or loss documentation. RG 19 (Bureau of Ships) holds hull/ship-history and YT-classification files. Spanish-era construction documentation for a Philippine-built yard tug is unlikely to exist in U.S. custody. NHHC photo catalog: no image of this hull was located (NavSource likewise holds none).
