    Finding
NHHC DANFS identifies Moody as DD-277 and Clemson class, built by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation at Squantum, Massachusetts. It gives laying down 9 December 1918, launching 28 June 1919, commissioning 10 December 1919, decommissioning 15 June 1922, recommissioning 27 September 1923, final decommissioning 2 June 1930, and striking 3 November 1930. Its specifications list complement 122. It records towing to Mare Island in June 1930, partial scrapping in June 1931, and sinking of the hulk off California in February 1933.

    Finding
An NHHC photograph caption places Moody (DD-277) in Puget Sound Navy Yard Dry Dock No. 2 in September 1922 with Henshaw (DD-278) and Meyer (DD-279), receiving modified after deckhouses to carry the after 4/50 guns higher above the waterline.

The caption documents a deckhouse alteration during Moody's first decommissioned interval. It neither documents asbestos nor shows that insulation was disturbed. The date is outside commissioned service.

    Opening Clemson-class design paragraph
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NHHC describes Clemson-class destroyers as two-screw vessels with geared turbines and an original complement of about 122. DANFS assigns Moody to that class, making the class account useful for machinery context only.

    Limitations
Class design does not verify Moody's installed machinery models or any asbestos-bearing part. The H-gram primarily discusses different Clemson-class hulls and later wartime modifications that cannot be assigned to Moody.

    Finding
The U.S. Census historical manufactures volume has a product category for asbestos products, steam and other packing, pipe and boiler covering, and gaskets for the 1899-1929 era. These were available industrial product categories during Moody's construction and service era; none is documented aboard DD-277 by this source.

    Limitations
Census industry classification shows period product availability, not a Navy procurement or Moody installation. The large scanned PDF's table was identified in the source index but individual values were not used. No listed product is attributed to this hull.

    Finding
NARA's Special List 44 indexes Moody (DD-277) deck logs for 10 December 1919-15 June 1922 and 27 September 1923-2 June 1930, independently matching the two commissioned periods in DANFS.

This is a bounded negative search result, not proof asbestos was absent. It excludes nonpublic and unreviewed archival holdings. CourtListener search remained blocked by fleet pacing at drafting and is separately marked pending, so this row makes no litigation-negative claim.
