DANFS record for this hull: Sims-class destroyer (dp. 1,570; 348'2" x 36'1" x 13'6"; 35 kt; cpl. 192; 5 x 5", 8 x 21" tt.). Laid down at the navy yard, Norfolk, Va., 7 June 1938; launched 1 June 1939; commissioned 5 March 1940, Comdr. H. B. Jarrett. Flagship of DesRon 2; North Atlantic Patrol summer 1941; at Charleston Navy Yard received the first fire-control radar installed on a destroyer; Pearl Harbor Feb 1942; Coral Sea (rescued ~500 Lexington survivors; damaged); Midway (over 500 Yorktown survivors); Santa Cruz (550 Hornet survivors); Guadalcanal; Attu/Kiska 1943; San Francisco 7-week overhaul; Liscome Bay standby Nov 1943; Wotje, Kwajalein/Namur, Eniwetok; western New Guinea landings (Hollandia, Wakde-Sarmi, Biak, Noemfoor, Sansapor, Morotai); Leyte Gulf and Luzon; Okinawa - kamikaze hit 6 April 1945 on portside between No. 1 and No. 2 guns, fires controlled after 2+ hours; temporary repairs Kerama Retto; departed 22 May, entered Hunters Point drydock San Francisco 18 June; declared neither seaworthy nor habitable; decommissioned 9 November 1945; struck 28 November 1945; stripped and sold to Franklin Shipwrecking 2 August 1947; resold to National Metal & Steel Corp., Terminal Island, Calif., 17 July 1949. 15 battle stars.

    Population
Norfolk Navy Yard construction trades 1938-40; wartime crew (design complement 192); Charleston/Pearl Harbor/Espiritu Santo/Hunters Point yard workers during availabilities
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The entry prints the biography of Robert Morris while the ship's sponsor and dedication were to Commodore Charles Morris - namesake conflict carried in gaps. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404 (standing NHHC link-rot defect, per BATCH-01 precedent).

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Corroborating ship-specific history naming the hull's namesake explicitly: Morris was 'named for Commodore Charles Morris' and was the eighth ship of the Sims class, built at Norfolk Navy Yard with sister Wainwright, commissioned there 5 March 1940; first U.S. destroyer fitted with fire-control radar while at Charleston in December 1941; repairs begun at Hunters Point were suspended when Japan's war effort collapsed; scrapped at Terminal Island by National Metal & Steel Corp. in 1949. Resolves the namesake ambiguity in the DANFS entry (which prints the Robert Morris biography under the Morris VII heading).

Specialist foundation site citing Naval Historical Center records - reputable secondary mirror, not itself an official document; used only to resolve the namesake question and corroborate DANFS dates, which it does independently. Contains no asbestos information.

    Finding
Class/era inference: a Sims-class destroyer of 1938-40 with a three-boiler high-pressure steam plant (3 x Babcock & Wilcox boilers, ~600-665 psi, superheated ~715 F; Westinghouse geared turbines; 50,000 shp; 2 shafts) would have carried period-standard asbestos thermal insulation, steam-line lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing - the era-standard insulated fit for a pre-WWII U.S. destroyer. The BuShips General Information Book series (per-vessel material/machinery specifications held in NARA RG19, exemplar DD-409/410 scanned by the Destroyer History Foundation) is the archival lead for hull-level material specifications; the DD-417 GIB was not located in digitized form.

Norfolk Navy Yard construction trades 1938-40; crew 1940-45; scrapping workers 1947-49
    Limitations
Class-level documentation and era inference only - no ship-specific record names the materials installed aboard DD-417. Does not establish quantity, locations, or that any specific product aboard this hull contained asbestos; not usable as 'documented aboard this hull' support.

  5. [5]Batch-3403 search ledger (this record): DANFS transcription (ibiblio HyperWar); Destroyer History Foundation ship and class pages; NARA catalog (JS-rendered, not retrievable programmatically); Naval Vessel Register (not applicable - hull stricken 1945); web-level litigation pre-screen; CourtListener API v4 (blocked by fleet pacing) [other_primary]

    Finding type

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no ACM survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or adjudicated exposure finding names this hull in the public sources searched (see litigation_sweep row ev-05 for the completed CourtListener result). The hull was sold 1947 and scrapped at Terminal Island 1947-49 - no extant structure, museum record, or modern abatement file exists to document; shipbreaking-era materials records for the National Metal & Steel teardown were not located.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the class/era inference stands independently. Absence of qualifying litigation in the searched indexes does not prove no suit was ever filed (RECAP coverage is incomplete, especially for older state-court filings).

    Finding
Completed litigation sweep (2026-09-27, authenticated, fleet-paced): "USS Morris" type=o = 0 hits; "USS Morris" + asbestos type=o = 0 hits; "DD-417" type=o = 1 hit (Keith v. Corbin, Fla. Dist. Ct. App. 1977 - name collision: non-asbestos state case, token match only, classified NOT qualifying); "USS Morris" type=r = 0 hits; "DD-417" type=r = 1 hit (Blatchford, interim administrator of Virginia Giuffre estate, S.D.N.Y. - name collision: docket/exhibit string, classified NOT qualifying). No qualifying asbestos litigation, no other litigation naming this hull located in the indexed corpus.

    Limitations
Sweep covers CourtListener's indexed opinions and RECAP dockets only - state-court filings never captured into PACER/RECAP, unindexed opinions, and settled/undocketed claims are outside its reach. A zero qualifying result here does not prove no claim was ever filed; it establishes that no qualifying case is retrievable in the indexed corpus searched.
