Live NHHC DANFS page returns 404 (standing defect since batch-01); verbatim transcription at destroyerhistory.org cited. Commissioning date conflicts with NavSource/uboat.net (25 vs 27 July 1942) and collision casualty count conflicts with secondary retellings (38 vs 35) - carried in gaps.

- DANFS-derived spec compilation - identity/specs only, no materials or asbestos content. Dimensions differ slightly from secondary compilations (348'4" x 36'1" per Wikipedia/DANFS infobox variants); class machinery figures carry a documented 47,000 vs 50,000 shp discrepancy (BuShips Ships' Data 1945 vs DANFS-type) recorded at class level.

- Finding
- NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research surveyed this hull's sunken bow section by towed Kraken KATFISH synthetic-aperture sonar in July 2019, at the request of the NOAA Office of Response and Restoration after the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service reported potential oil slicks in the vicinity. The bow lies on its port side near the head of Hudson Canyon, ~185 km (100 nmi) southeast of New York Harbor, with gun turrets and tower structure resolved in the imagery. The feature corroborates the DANFS casualty figure ('the forward half of the ship was sheared off and sank with 38 officers and men aboard', 21 October 1943, tanker Bulkoil) and notes the stern's seven-month New York repair and post-repair service (Normandy, southern France, Okinawa).

- Population

- Limitations
- Environmental/imaging survey of the sunken bow only - documents wreck location and condition; the oil-slick interest concerns petroleum, not asbestos, and no hazardous-material assessment of the wreck is reported. Does not address the surviving (scrapped) hull's materials. Corroborates, not establishes, collision facts.

- Finding
- Era/yard inference: a Benson-class (1941-repeat 'Laffey' group) destroyer built 1941-42 at Bethlehem Steel's Mariners Harbor (Staten Island) yard with the class-standard four-superheated-boiler, ~50,000-shp geared steam-turbine plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation - boiler and steam-line lagging, turbine lagging, valve/flange gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. The 1943-44 replacement of the entire bow at the New York Navy Yard was a second wartime construction event on this hull; that yard is Atlas-documented at tier 3 for asbestos (Kaylo products; consolidated wartime-exposure litigation). The builder yard (Bethlehem Steel, Mariners Harbor) does NOT exist in the Atlas yard dataset - the 'bethlehem-shipbuilding' record covers the Quincy/Sparrows Point facilities - so builder-yard inference here is era-only; NARA RG19 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications are an archival lead for hull-level specs.

- Limitations
- Class/era and yard-context inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. No material schedule, insulation specification, or yard work-order naming DD-603 located; yard-level asbestos records document the yards, not materials installed on this hull. Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure. NARA GIB retrieval not performed.

- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - placing this 1941-42-built hull (including its 1943-44 bow replacement) entirely inside the documented asbestos-use era. All phases of this hull (construction, wartime service, 1946-1970 reserve, 1972 disposal) predate the substitution era.

- Finding
- Litigation surface for this hull. Exact-phrase '"USS Murphy"' on the published-opinion index (type=o): zero results. Same phrase on the RECAP docket index (type=r): zero results. Hull-number ('DD-603'/'DD 603'), 'U.S.S. Murphy', and 'aboard the Murphy' sweeps were deferred when the fleet-wide CourtListener pacing budget (~114 requests/hour shared across sessions) was exhausted mid-session; the residual risk is carried in gaps. Name-collision frame: DD-603 is the only U.S. Navy ship bearing exactly 'USS Murphy' (the distinct USS Michael Murphy, DDG-112, entered service 2012 - a partial-name collision for exact-phrase queries), but 'Murphy' is an extremely common surname in captions and judge names, so bare-name results would be near-unreadable noise and were not attempted.

- Limitations
- Sweep completeness limited to the exact-phrase opinion and docket queries completed (0 hits each); the hull-number and phrasing-variant queries remain open under fleet pacing - an unadjudicated pleading naming the hull could exist in the unindexed or unqueried portions of the corpus. A negative result bounds the public index, not the world: unindexed state-court or settled matters cannot be excluded.

- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, materials inventory, hazmat disclosure, or adjudicated exposure finding located for this hull. The hull was sold and broken up beginning late 1972, so no museum, donation-condition, or drydock-documentation channel ever existed for it - the channel that produced ship-specific records for preserved destroyers (e.g., USS Laffey's 2009 drydock field report) never applied. The asbestos picture rests on class/era inference (ev-04, ev-05) and documented yard context at construction (Bethlehem, Staten Island - not in the yard dataset), bow rebuild (New York Navy Yard), repairs/refit (Boston Navy Yard), and inactivation (Charleston).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located ship-specific record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-standard applications are documented at class/era level. Absence may reflect the hull's 1972 scrapping eliminating the museum/disclosure phases that produced records for preserved hulls.

- Archival leads that could carry hull-level material specifications, equipment lists, or repair-documentation for this hull were identified in the NARA catalog but not retrieved: the ship's compiled War History and monthly War Diaries in RG 38 (digitized on Fold3 microfilm rolls A2071/A2009), plus the RG 19 BuShips General Information Book series. The war diary for the collision period (October-November 1943) and any New York Navy Yard bow-replacement work packages would be the highest-value hull-level leads.
