- Second and third history paragraphs
- Finding type

- Finding
- During World War II Nawona served Service Force, Pacific Fleet, in San Francisco Bay, assisting berthing and docking and performing towing, waterfront fire protection, and inner harbor patrol. She remained active in the 12th Naval District until 1963, and was struck from the Naval Register and sold in September 1964.

- Limitations
- The brief DANFS entry does not date initial service or formal out-of-service action, identify specific overhaul yards, describe vessel materials, or establish exposure to asbestos. Post-sale fate is not given. Re-verified 2026-10-01 via the same archived capture.

- 1946 San Francisco and Treasure Island operations, paragraphs beginning 'Shifting berths on 31 May 1946'
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NHHC's ATR-10 history identifies Nawona (YTB-261) assisting ATR-10 with berth shifts at Treasure Island on 31 May and 4 June 1946, taking ATR-10 to an anchorage on 7 June, and moving it alongside Pier 14 on 27 June.

- Limitations
- The live NHHC page flapped between HTTP 200 and 404 during re-verification on 2026-10-01, so the claim was verified against the 2022-10-02 archived capture. The four Nawona (YTB-261) mentions in that capture corroborate the 31 May, 4 June, 7 June, and 27 June 1946 operations. This independent operational account confirms tug work and location on four dates only. It does not show Nawona undergoing repair at the Bethlehem yard mentioned for ATR-10, and says nothing about Nawona's machinery or asbestos.

[4]Naval History and Heritage Command, Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, 'Cahto (YTB-215)' [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- Opening specifications and first two history paragraphs
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NHHC identifies Cahto (YTB-215), the class lead, as a diesel harbor tug and records its reclassification from YT to YTB on 15 May 1944. This is class background for Nawona, which DANFS explicitly calls Cahto class.

- Limitations
- Cahto is a different hull from a different builder. Its diesel description does not directly document Nawona's installed engine or any asbestos component. No steam boiler or steam-system inference is made for Nawona. The NHHC page returned intermittent HTTP 200/404 on 2026-10-01 and no archived capture was located; this row rests on the 2026-09-25 live verification by the prior session.

- Locator
- QPL-33-P-16, QPL-15091-5, QPL-16265-5 index rows
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- NAVSEA's official asbestos reading-room index lists Navy qualified-product records dating within Nawona's service era, including asbestos rod packing (QPL-33-P-16, 1950-1960), asbestos thermal felt (QPL-15091-5, 1962), and metallic-asbestos piping gaskets (QPL-16265-5, 1961). These establish Navy-era product categories for archival investigation only.

- Limitations
- Navy-wide product qualification is neither a Cahto-class specification nor a Nawona procurement or installation record. It cannot establish which, if any, of these products was aboard Nawona, an exposure pathway, quantity, or causation. NAVSEA's page was available through the indexed official listing but its full page returned HTTP 403 to direct automated retrieval. Re-attempted 2026-10-01: still HTTP 403 (Akamai edge block), consistent with 2026-09-25.

- General Information Books; Board of Inspection and Survey Reports; Cartographic Branch sections
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA identifies RG 19 Bureau of Ships hull drawings, especially S39 insulation and lagging and S48 piping, auxiliary-vessel General Information Books, and RG 38 auxiliary and yardcraft inspection reports as relevant places to seek ship-specific asbestos information. These series are archival leads for Nawona.

- Limitations
- The NARA guide describes record series generally, not records found for Nawona. The guide covers vessels through 1961, so Nawona's later service requires separate archive follow-up. No actual drawing, book, or inspection report for YTB-261 was reviewed. Guide page re-verified live 2026-10-01 (HTTP 200); RG 19, GIB, and RG 38 sections confirmed present.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Authenticated CourtListener searches for "Nawona", "YT-261", and "YTB-261" across opinion and RECAP docket indexes returned no qualifying asbestos case naming the tug. "Nawona" opinions: 0 hits. "Nawona" dockets: 5 hits, all unrelated (one personal-name collision, four non-vessel captions). "YT-261" opinions: 76 hits, all tokenized-number search noise with zero vessel-keyword matches. "YT-261" dockets: 0 hits. "YTB-261" opinions: 5 hits, all noise, zero vessel-keyword matches. "YTB-261" dockets: 138 hits, tokenized-number noise, zero vessel-keyword matches in the top 20 relevance-ranked results.

- Limitations
- This is an absence-of-located-record result within the listed public searches, not proof that the vessel lacked asbestos or that no lawsuit ever existed. Non-digitized construction and maintenance files remain unreviewed. The CourtListener hull-number queries tokenize to bare numbers, so results are search noise; the classification was verified by scanning returned captions and snippets for vessel keywords.

[8]Wikipedia, 'USS Oneyana' (tertiary; article incorporates public-domain DANFS text) [other_primary]
- Locator
- History infobox Reclassified row; lead paragraph
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The sister tug Oneyana (YTB-262), also a Cahto-class district harbor tug built by J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corp. at Tacoma, is documented as laid down as YT-262 on 20 June 1943 and reclassified YTB-262 on 15 May 1944. This establishes the fleet-wide YT-to-YTB reclassification pattern for same-yard sister hulls on the exact date Nawona was named, but it does not document a YT-261 designation for Nawona herself.

- Limitations
- Tertiary source documenting a different hull. Corroborates the reclassification pattern but is not a Nawona-specific primary record; the YT-261 predecessor designation for Nawona remains unverified and is excluded as a ship-specific fact.

[9]Naval Historical Center, Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, 'Nawona' (official page preserved by Internet Archive) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- Nawona heading, specifications and first history paragraph
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Navy DANFS identifies Nawona as Cahto class, YTB-261, with a design complement of 12. J. Al. Martinac Shipbuilding Corp. laid her down at Tacoma in April 1944; she was named 15 May and launched about a month later.

- Role
- supporting
- Documentation level
- ship_specific
- Accessed
- 2026-10-01
- Limitations
- The Navy entry gives a design complement, not a dated muster. It does not provide an exact launch day, in-service date, machinery details, or asbestos information. The batch's YT-261 identifier has not been independently verified in a Nawona-specific primary record. Re-verified 2026-10-01 via the same archived capture; the archived page remains the stable copy because the current NHHC DANFS path for Nawona could not be located (guessed live paths returned 404 or generic pages).
