    Finding
NARA identifies RG 19 Destroyer, Destroyer Escort, and Frigate General Information Books and Related Documentation (Entry P 9), plus Ship Engineering Drawings (19-Hull) and microfilm drawings (19-Micro), as archival series useful for asbestos research. For a ship-specific follow-up, request DD818 correspondence and drawings, including insulation/lagging and piping material groups where present.

  3. [3]CourtListener API v4 authenticated helper sweep, exact-name opinion query "USS New"; docket and hull-number queries incomplete [court_record]
    Locator
Authenticated helper output on 2026-09-27: type=o, query="USS New", count=8; subsequent type=r and DD-818 attempts did not complete
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
CourtListener sweep is incomplete. The required authenticated exact-name opinion search for "USS New" returned eight search hits, whose visible results included unrelated criminal, veterans-benefits, and municipal matters; no qualifying asbestos result was identified from the returned material. Required authenticated docket and DD-818 searches did not complete because the fleet pacing limiter did not grant a request token before the execution window ended.

    Limitations
This is not a completed negative litigation finding. The returned exact-name opinion hits were not asbestos litigation on the material reviewed, but the docket and hull-number searches remain incomplete; no inference about absence of litigation or asbestos exposure may be drawn.

    Locator
Beginning Research; General Information Books; Cartographic Branch (RG 19, 19-Hull and 19-Micro)
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
NARA's authoritative research guide states that use of asbestos in U.S. Navy materiel from 1941 through 1961 is a frequently requested subject and identifies RG 19 records, including destroyer General Information Books and hull engineering drawings, as avenues for vessel-specific research. It directs research by hull designation, class, construction yard, and overhaul period.

U.S. Navy materiel and researchers; not DD-818-specific
    Limitations
This is Navy-wide, era-level research guidance, not evidence that asbestos was installed aboard DD-818. It identifies archival routes but does not establish product identity, location, quantity, condition, exposure, causation, or legal eligibility for this hull.
