Official NHHC ship-history summary covering the post-1970 window the DANFS entry lacks (NRF transfer, decommissioning, Korean disposal). Does not address asbestos or materials. March 1949 DDR-883 date conflicts with the DANFS narrative's 'in 1950' - carried in gaps. 'Until 1998' ROKN service conflicts with secondary sources' 1997 decommissioning.

    Finding
Era/class inference for this hull: DD-883 is a Gearing-class destroyer built October 1944-July 1945 at Consolidated Steel, Orange, Texas - a 2,425-ton, four-boiler, 60,000-shp geared-steam design completed at the peak of naval asbestos use; period-standard fit for such a plant included boiler and turbine lagging, steam-line insulation, gaskets and packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. The Destroyer History Foundation records that in May 1945 the Navy selected twelve more Gearings (DDs 830-835 and 878-883 - which includes this hull) for radar-picket conversion, and that 44 Gearings received FRAM I conversions beginning in the late 1950s - both programs applying to this hull per NHHC.

Shipyard trades and crew aboard this hull's construction, conversion, and FRAM periods (inference only)
    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no source names materials installed aboard DD-883 itself; 'this hull would have carried' remains an inference from design and era, not a finding. Radar-picket and FRAM conversions are documented ship events; their asbestos disturbance scope is inferred, not documented.

Class-level litigation recital: the omnibus opinion in Goodrich v. Air & Liquid Systems Corp. (E.D. Va. asbestos docket) recites that 'an engineering drawing for the insulation and lagging of forced draft blower turbines for the class of destroyers (DD 692, USS Allen M. Sumner class), within which the USS Harlan Dickson fell, specifies the use of amosite felts and asbestos cloths' and quotes an expert report's 'partial tally of the weight of the asbestos-containing thermal insulation and lagging products in the fire ... and engine rooms of a ship belonging to the USS Allen M. Sumner (DD 692) and USS Gearing (DD 710) classes of destroyers' as 30.3 tons. The Gearing class is a 14-foot hull-plug lengthening of the Sumner design sharing its machinery plant; DD-883 is a Gearing-class member.

    Limitations
Litigation-record recital of an engineering drawing and expert partial tally - not an adjudicated classwide quantity; the opinion treats some related exposure conclusions as speculative. Drawing covers Sumner-class DD-692 machinery shared by Gearing design; 30.3 tons is a fire/engine-room partial tally, not a whole-hull inventory. Never a ship-specific finding for DD-883. Qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull at the pleading stage: Spiro v. Burnham LLC et al., No. 1:25-cv-10605 (D. Mass., filed 2025-03-13; Judge Julia E. Kobick; RECAP docket 69734930, PACER case 281975). The complaint alleges plaintiff Robert Spiro served in the U.S. Navy as a machinist mate aboard USS Coolbaugh (DE-217) approximately 1957-1959 and aboard USS Newman K. Perry (DD-883) approximately 1959-1960, plus post-service work as a heating-products salesman ca. 1976-1979; he attributed his mesothelioma to naval and civilian asbestos exposure; claims included negligence/failure-to-warn counts against product defendants and a conspiracy count against Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. (with Johns Manville/Raymark). An amended complaint was answered with crossclaims in June-July 2025. D. Mass. asbestos-docket clerk's notes (Nov. 2025, Jan. 2026) record that Mr. Spiro's deposition was completed before his death, a probate appointment for the estate was received, and the case transferred to the asbestos docket, Trial Group Y, in discovery.

    Limitations
Pleading-stage allegation only - the least-final litigation posture: the complaint's ship list is an allegation, not a finding. Case rests at discovery stage on the D. Mass. asbestos docket (Trial Group Y) with the plaintiff deceased and an estate representative substituted; no adjudication of exposure aboard this hull, no product identification for DD-883, and no determination of causation. The ca. 1959-60 service window postdates construction-era yard work and falls between the 1953 Boston overhaul and the 1964-65 FRAM I conversion. Docket existence and posture verified via CourtListener RECAP index and D. Mass. clerk's notes; the specific ship-list allegations come from the complaint as reported in legal-industry press - the complaint document itself was not retrieved this session.

Screven, 19 S.C. 445 (1883), where 'N. K. Perry' appears as an attorney/party name predating the ship; '"Newman Perry"' type=o returned 3 hits, all person-name collisions (Newman v. State, Fla. 2008; State v. Wilcox, Or. 2025 x2); '"DD-883"' and '"DDR-883"' type=o each returned 0. On the docket side, '"1:25-cv-10605"' type=r confirmed Spiro v. Burnham LLC (mad, filed 2025-03-13, RECAP docket 69734930) - the qualifying asbestos litigation at ev-uss-newman-k-perry-dd883-06 - plus two unrelated same-number dockets (ilnd, nysd); '"Spiro"' type=r returned a surname flood (3966; top-20 all unrelated bankruptcy/person names). Exact-name and hull-number docket queries ('"Newman K. Perry"', '"Newman Perry"', '"DD-883"' type=r; 'Spiro asbestos', '"Spiro" "Metropolitan Life"' type=r; 'Spiro "Newman"' type=o) remained pacing-starved through end of session - fleet budget contention; logged honestly in the ledger as pending.
