- DANFS (fourth Nightingale): built 1940 by Western Boat Building Co., Tacoma, WA, as Saint Francis, a wooden-hulled, diesel-powered purse seiner. Acquired by the Navy from owner Hubert Ursich at Tacoma 1941-12-13; designated YP-150 and performed district patrol duties in the Seattle area. Entered the Western Boat Building yard 1941-12-21 for conversion to a coastal minesweeper; renamed Nightingale 1942-04-22; placed in service as AMc-149 at Seattle 1942-05-21. Redesignated IX-177 on 1944-07-10 after all minesweeping equipment was removed; continued Puget Sound operations including utility services for the Torpedo Training Program out of NAS Whidbey Island. Placed out of service 1945-12-03 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton; struck from the Navy List 1946-02-07; returned to the War Shipping Administration for disposal.

- Crew (NavSource-compiled figure of 17, unverified); Western Boat Building yard conversion workers (1941-12 to 1942-05)
- Limitations
- Official U.S. Navy history (public-domain DANFS text) accessed via transcription mirrors because the NHHC canonical URL was not located (same link-rot pattern logged in BATCH-01). Establishes identity, acquisition, conversion, service, and disposal chain. Contains no asbestos, insulation, or materials information whatsoever - supports no asbestos claim.

- Finding
- Compiled specifications and milestones: displacement 160 tons; length 93 ft; beam 24 ft 1 in; draft 9 ft 5 in; speed 11 kt; complement 17; armament four machine guns; propulsion one 350 shp Enterprise diesel, one shaft. Milestone list adds 'transferred to the War Shipping Administration in April 1946 for disposal; fate unknown.'

- Limitations
- Volunteer-compiled secondary archive, not an official record - specifications are NavSource compilations, not builder or Navy figures. Beam differs from secondary web compilation (24 ft 1 in vs 22 ft 0 in - unresolved, see gaps). Complement of 17 unverified against DANFS/NHHC. No asbestos information; supports no asbestos claim.

[3]HyperWar 'Ships of the U.S. Navy, 1940-1945: Coastal Minesweepers' - converted-vessel class block carried on the AMc-149 page (compiled by Patrick Clancey from official sources) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Converted Vessel Class Coastal Minesweeper specification block, AMc-149 page
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Class context for the converted-vessel coastal minesweepers (AMc-149 group): hulls were 'converted from commercial fishermen (except 203 and 204): mostly draggers and purse seiners, largely tuna clippers from west coast ports.' Class-aggregate ranges: 76 ft 7 in-136 ft length, 165-270 tons, 8.5-14 kt, complements 15-47.

- Limitations
- Class-aggregate compilation establishing the design origin of the type (commercial fishing hulls), not a record for this hull. Confirms the wooden/diesel fishing-vessel baseline that bounds any asbestos inference; contains no asbestos information.

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era in which this vessel was built (1940) and naval-converted (1941-42).

- 1940s era documented; article 1987
- Population
- WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (class context)
- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarship on WWII shipbuilding generally, centered on shipyard workforces and steel/steam construction; does not name this hull. For a wooden-hulled diesel craft without boilers or steam plant, era inference is materially weaker than for steam vessels - it does not establish that asbestos was or is aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, exposure, or causation.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Archival lead (not retrieved - requires research-room or reproduction order; no spend authorized): the vessel's 1941-1945 deck logs, if extant, sit in NARA RG 24 'Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations, 1941-1992' (Entry A1-118; NAID 581208); NARA Special List 44 indexes logbooks 1801-1947 by ship name and number. The batch brief asserts 1941 Navy deck logs establish service; the NARA digitized deck-log index contains no Nightingale/YP-150/AMc-149/IX-177 entry, so no digitized copy is publicly available. Related files: Western Boat Building contract records (RG 19/RG 72-type acquisition files) and WSA disposal records for the 1946 transfer.

- Limitations
- Record-group mapping only - no box-level retrieval performed and no digitized log for this hull located in NARA's index. Whether this vessel's logbooks survive and where they sit is unverified until surveyed in person. Nothing in this row is an asbestos finding.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming YP-150, AMc-149, IX-177, Nightingale, or Saint Francis was found in the public sources searched. MARAD ShipHistory contains no vessel record (endpoint control-verified); the Naval Vessel Register carries no entry (stricken 1946, outside NVR scope); the NARA digitized deck-log index lists no log for this hull; CourtListener API sweep was blocked by daily quota and a supplementary web-index check returned no qualifying case (see search_ledger).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - wooden/diesel construction reduces but does not eliminate era-consistent asbestos applications. The litigation check is partial: the authenticated CourtListener API returned a rate-limit response (2,800/day quota exhausted) and only a web-index supplement was run. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
