DANFS record for this hull: Admirable-class minesweeper (dp. 945; l. 184'6"; b. 33'; dr. 9'9"; s. 14.8 k.; cpl. 104; a. 1 3", 4 40mm.; cl. Admirable). Laid down '17 September 1943' per the transcription - internally inconsistent with the 12 June 1943 launch in the same sentence; NAVSHIPS 250-011 prints keel laid 17 Sept 42 (see ev-02), and all secondary sources read 1942. Builder Gulf Shipbuilding Corp., Chickasaw, Alabama; launched 12 June 1943; sponsored by Mrs. John F. Brown; commissioned 23 December 1943, Lt. R. B. Williams, USNR, in command. Shakedown via New Orleans to Little Creek, Va.; minecraft training for precommissioning crews; departed Norfolk 3 May 1944 for Argentia, Newfoundland; embarked Coast Guard meteorologists and sailed 22 June for Davis Strait as a weather patrol ship providing North Atlantic convoys weather data; ordered 27 October to Boston then Norfolk for minesweeping training and overhaul. Departed Norfolk February 1945 for the Pacific via Bermuda, the Panama Canal, and San Diego, arriving Pearl Harbor 5 April; departed 28 April for the Western Pacific; joined TU 94.19.18 for Okinawa 24 May; operated in and around Kerama Retto on antiaircraft patrols 30 May - 4 July 1945, then continuous East China Sea minesweeping - over 100 contact mines swept in two months; occupation duty after the surrender of Japan 2 September; continued Western Pacific sweeping and patrol until decommissioned 29 May 1946 at Shanghai and turned over to the Foreign Liquidation Commission, simultaneously transferred to the Chinese Maritime Custom Fleet. Two battle stars for World War II service.

The official 1945 BuShips register names NOTABLE, official number AM 267, in the mine-sweeper tables: builder 'Gulf Shipbuilding Corp.'; keel laid 17 Sept 42; launched 12 Jun 43; date of first commission 23 Dec 43. The propulsion table carries the AM-267 row inside the 'C. B. GSB-8' (Cooper-Bessemer GSB-8) ditto block - shaft horsepower 1,710, 'Nat. Sup.' (National Supply Co.) single reduction gear. The AM214-311 class characteristics block prints: 2 propellers, geared 'Diesel' drive with single reduction gears (the register distinguishes this from 'Diesel elec.'); length 184'6" o.a. / 180'0" w.l.; extreme beam 33'0"; limiting-draft displacement 945 tons; trial displacement 850 tons; trial speed 14.8 knots; limiting draft 9'9"; total accommodations 11 officers + 93 enlisted; armament 1 x 3"/50 cal. Finding
Source discrepancies logged, not silently merged: (a) Keel-laid year - the hazegray DANFS transcription prints 'laid down 17 September 1943,' postdating the printed 12 June 1943 launch; the contemporaneous NAVSHIPS 250-011 register prints '17 Sept 42' and NavSource/uboat.net/Wikipedia all read 1942. Carried as 1942-09-17; the DANFS '1943' is a typo. (b) Build-yard city - DANFS, the NavSource chronology line, and uboat.net read Gulf Shipbuilding, Chickasaw, AL; Colton's Madisonville yard table files AM-267 under Gulf's Madisonville, LA yard (yard hull #10, in the same table as the AM-126..131 Auk block and sisters AM-268/269/270/271), and his minesweepers master table likewise reads 'Gulf SB, Madisonville LA.' DANFS (official) is carried for builder_location; the Madisonville assignment is documented, not adopted - NAVSHIPS confirms the corporation but prints no city, so the yard-city question remains open pending the contract file. (c) A NavSource photo caption asserts the hull was built at American Ship Building's Lorain, OH yard - contradicting that page's own chronology line, DANFS, and NAVSHIPS; treated as a caption error. (d) Propulsion - NAVSHIPS prints geared 'Diesel' drive, Cooper-Bessemer GSB-8, 1,710 shp, National Supply gear; NavSource agrees; Wikipedia's class-infobox prints 'ALCO 539 / Farrel-Birmingham' and HyperWar's compiled card prints 'diesel-electric, 1,800 h.p.' - both contradicted by the official register. (e) Displacement - DANFS and NavSource 945 t (full/limiting load); HyperWar 625 t; Wikipedia 650 t (standard vs full-load convention). (f) HyperWar prints 'commissioned 1945' - an error; all other sources read 23 Dec 1943. (g) Colton's Madisonville table carries Auk-class boilerplate figures (890d, 221 ft) for the Admirable-class rows - table-formatting artifact, not adopted.

Era/design inference: this hull is a 1942-43-built steel Admirable-class minesweeper with a geared-diesel twin-screw plant (two Cooper-Bessemer GSB-8 diesels, National Supply reduction gear, per the official register) - no boilers, no steam distribution, no steam turbines. Its insulation load was materially lighter than a steam combatant's, but machinery and construction materials of the 1942-43 wartime era were commonly asbestos-containing: diesel exhaust-system and muffler lagging, machinery gaskets and packing, valve stem packing, electrical-cable insulation, accommodation/galley joiner insulation, winch and windlass brake linings, and deck compositions of the period. Exposure-relevant populations if any such material was present: Gulf Coast construction trades (1942-43); Norfolk availability/overhaul workers (Oct-Nov 1944 - 'Norfolk for minesweeping training and overhaul' per DANFS, facility not named); the wartime crew (design complement 104) across Davis Strait weather patrol, Okinawa/Kerama Retto antiaircraft patrol, and East China Sea mine clearance; and the Chinese Maritime Customs crews after May 1946.

    Limitations
Inference from documented design, machinery type, and construction era - NOT a hull materials record. No survey, specification, or material schedule naming AM-267 was located; establishes no asbestos content, quantity, location, condition, individual exposure, or causation. The geared-diesel plant makes even era-level inference weaker than for steam vessels of the same era.

Industry-wide wartime survey, not a hull record - does not name this vessel, Gulf Shipbuilding, or the Admirable class; its reassuring conclusion ('not a dangerous occupation') is itself now criticized as deeply flawed (Kelly, New Solut 2026;36:138-150, PMID 42307414). Finding
The only litigation document located naming a 'USS Notable' is a name collision, not a hit on this hull: the Agee v. Chesterton mass-joinder asbestos complaint (D. Del., filed 30 Oct 2006) alleges plaintiff John M. Brown of Birmingham, Alabama 'was also in the United States Navy as a mine sweeper from 1965 to 1967 on the USS Notable' (Complaint p.20-21, para. 17; asbestosis diagnosis 27 May 1998). During 1965-1967 the only commissioned USS Notable was the second ship of the name - MSO-460 (ex-AM-460, Aggressive-class, Higgins Inc., in commission 1955-1971); this record's hull, AM-267, had been decommissioned and transferred to the Chinese Maritime Customs at Shanghai on 29 May 1946. The case was transferred to MDL-875 (E.D. Pa.) with the D. Del. docket closed 3 April 2007; the allegation was never adjudicated.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942-43-built vessel is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials even accounting for its lighter geared-diesel insulation load. The hull's post-1946 whereabouts and disposition are unknown, foreclosing any present-day survey pathway. CourtListener coverage was completed via the public search UI and Atom feeds rather than the authenticated API (HTTP 429, shared key at quota) - result counts and case names are verified; the docket-text review of Agee was performed against the archive.org RECAP mirror of ECF No. 1.
