  1. [1]Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, Oratamin (YTB-347), reproduced by HistoryCentral [nhhc_danfs]
    Locator
Entire short vessel entry; construction and service paragraphs
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The reproduced DANFS history identifies Oratamin as former Port Kent, Maritime Commission hull 451, built by Ira S. Bushey & Sons in Brooklyn, launched 23 December 1942, completed and taken over by the Navy 15 February 1943. It places her in San Juan Harbor through 1951, then in the Norfolk and Hampton Roads area, and gives the YTM-347 redesignation as February 1962.

    Limitations
This is a reproduction of the DANFS text on a third-party site because the direct NHHC Oratamin entry could not be retrieved. It provides vessel history only, not equipment, asbestos content, individual exposure, or final disposition. The YTB-347 designation is in the entry heading but its effective date is not given.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding

    Limitations
Corroborates Oratamin's identity, YTM designation, and a specific Norfolk harbor operation; says nothing about Oratamin's construction materials, asbestos, or crew exposure.

    Highlights, Navy insulation policy paragraph
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
GAO reported that the Navy's 1975 policy was to replace asbestos insulation only when damaged or when removal was required for repairs, and that the policy was broadened in 1979 for selected high-maintenance areas.

    Limitations
Navy-wide policy based on Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyard review; GAO does not identify Oratamin or any material on her. The 1975 and 1979 policies postdate much of her documented service and cannot establish exposure on this tug.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
NARA identifies asbestos use in U.S. Navy materiel during 1941-1961 as a research subject; Oratamin's documented Navy service overlaps that period.

    Population
U.S. Navy ships and personnel in the 1941-1961 period
    Limitations
This is era-wide Navy materiel context only. NARA does not identify any asbestos product or item installed on Oratamin; overlap of service dates with the era cannot establish hull-specific material, exposure, or causation.

    Finding type

    Finding
A NAVSEA ship-history table lists YTM 0347 ORATAMIN with a removal date of 5 June 1970 and a final-disposition code of 'SCRAP SALE'.

    Limitations
The row was visible in a search-engine index of the official NAVSEA PDF; direct PDF download returned HTTP 403. 'SCRAP SALE' is the source's disposition code, not proof of physical scrapping or its date. 'Removal date' is used as labeled in the table, without equating it to decommissioning or striking.

    Limitations
A negative search result is not proof that asbestos was absent. The exact-name CourtListener opinion hits concern The Oratamin Club, Inc., a name collision; docket searches could not be completed because the fleet helper repeatedly reported pacing. This row does not determine personal exposure, causation, or legal eligibility.
