[2]Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, Orono entry, reproduced at HistoryCentral [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- Orono YTB-190, two narrative paragraphs; official NHHC candidate URL returned 404
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The reproduced DANFS entry identifies Orono as YT-190, laid down 16 May 1942 by Pacific Coast Engineering Co. at Alameda, launched 11 July 1942, and placed in service 29 May 1943. It describes 13th Naval District work around the Columbia River; the tug was based at Astoria and helped move Portland-built escort carriers and attack transports for outfitting. It records reclassification to YTB-190 in May 1944, later work at Tongue Point, reassignment in 1961, and reclassification to YTM-190 in February 1962. The entry states service with the 12th Naval District into 1970.

- Limitations
- The accessible text is a reproduction with obvious transcription errors (including 'Ororo,' 'Port Doeks,' and 'Yort Doeks'); the current official NHHC entry could not be fetched. The service history is attributed to the reproduced DANFS text, not independently confirmed by an original scan. It gives no asbestos, material, exposure, or disease information. It says placed in service, not commissioned.

[3]U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Library, Veteran Exposure to Asbestos (reviewed March 2026) [other_primary]
- Locator
- What are sources of asbestos exposure in the military?; page lines 111-116
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The Department of Veterans Affairs states that asbestos-containing materials were used in Navy ships and shipyards before the mid-1970s, including engine-room and other below-deck areas, and lists general military uses including lagging, gaskets, brakes, and floor coverings.

- Population
- Navy service personnel and shipyard workers generally
- Limitations
- Fleet- and era-level VA guidance issued long after Orono's known service; it does not name Orono or the Woban class. Listed materials and work areas are not attributable to this tug and cannot establish its installation, quantity, condition, handling, or exposure.

[4]Batch-9321 search ledger: reproduced DANFS entry, NHHC URL attempt, NARA research guides, VA historical context, and CourtListener helper pacing notices [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-orono-yt190-01 through sl-uss-orono-yt190-06
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No Orono-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, material specification, or exposure finding was located in the public sources searched; the accessible vessel history contains no asbestos statement. CourtListener searching was prevented by fleet-wide helper pacing, so this negative result does not cover a completed litigation sweep.

- Limitations
- A search-limited negative finding is not proof that asbestos was absent, that no exposure occurred, or that no case exists. The original DANFS page and underlying NARA series were not retrieved, and CourtListener did not execute a search at the time this row was drafted.

[5]National Archives, Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961; Ship Plans in the Cartographic Research Room [other_primary]
- Locator
- RG 38 Entry P 1-I; Specification Files; RG 19 hull-series plans; https://www.archives.gov/research/cartographic/ship-plans
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA identifies RG 38 Entry P 1-I as Auxiliary and Yardcraft Material Inspection Reports (1940-1978), RG 19 ship-specification and correspondence series as potential sources for materials research, and the RG 19 hull series of engineering drawings as requestable by hull number. These are leads for YT/YTB/YTM-190 records; no Orono file was retrieved.

- 1940-1978 holdings
- Limitations
- NARA describes record series, not the existence or contents of an Orono-specific file. The lead does not document asbestos aboard this hull. The hull-series plan guidance principally describes commissioned ships, while Orono is described as placed in service, so coverage requires confirmation.

[6]National Archives, An Introduction to Navy Deck Logs; DANFS Orono reproduction [other_primary]
- Locator
- Opening paragraphs concerning service vessels; DANFS Orono opening paragraph
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA explains that most harbor tugs were 'in service' rather than commissioned and their logs were generally not retained as permanent deck logs; Orono's reproduced DANFS entry likewise says she was placed in service.

- Limitations
- This explains a research limitation generally; it does not establish whether any Orono log survives in a parent command collection and says nothing about asbestos.
