Contemporaneous ship-generated history for this hull: built by Defoe Shipbuilding Corporation at Bay City, Michigan; after construction and fitting out at Bay City the ship departed about 1 January 1944, transited lakes Huron and Michigan, the Chicago Canal to Joliet, Illinois, and the Mississippi River to the open sea; placed in full commission 1000 on 23 February 1944 by Captain Rufus King, USN (ret.), representative of the Commandant, Eighth Naval District, at Naval Pier, Todd-Johnson Dry-Docks Corporation, Algiers, Louisiana; shakedown Bermuda March 1944 with a five-day availability at the Charleston Navy Yard on return; escort and hunter-killer operations with Task Group 30.4 (Solomons; the history credits the group operation with six enemy submarines sunk); patrol, escort and hunter-killer work from Ulithi, Palau and Saipan; attached to hunter-killer TG 30.4 in the Western Carolines December 1944-January 1945; Guam Patrol and Escort Unit from February 1945; on 26 August 1945 departed Guam with USS Currier (DE-700) for Rota Island where a preliminary surrender conference was held aboard Osmus with Japanese Army and Navy representatives; on 30 August with USS Stack (DD-406) awaited USS Portland (CA-33) and USS Talbot (DD-390) for the Truk surrender signed aboard Portland 2 September, Osmus and the destroyers furnishing the screen; remained at Truk one week as a communications representative; on 18 September 1945 departed Guam in company with USS George (DE-697) for San Pedro to undergo general overhaul. Appended: roster of officers and enlisted men who remained with the ship from commissioning until return to the United States.

Defoe construction trades; commissioning/yard workers at Todd-Johnson Dry Docks (Algiers, LA) and Charleston Navy Yard; wartime crew (named roster appended to the document)
    Limitations
War-history narrative documents construction, fitting-out route, commissioning site, yard availability, and operations - it does not address materials or asbestos content. Group-level claims (TG 30.4 submarine kills) are task-group results, not ship-specific actions. NavSource hosts the scan; the document itself is the official ship-submitted history (NHHC/NARA record series). Some lines are partially legible in the scan.

    Finding
Era/design inference: DE-701 is a Buckley-class (TE, turbo-electric) destroyer escort - one of only two DE classes built with a full steam plant (the other, John C. Butler WGT). BuShips Ships' Data 1945 design groups 2-3 give two 'D' express-type boilers at 435 psi/750 deg F superheat feeding GE turbo-electric machinery, 12,000 shp, 2 shafts, 23.6 kt; per the navypedia per-block boiler-manufacturer map the Defoe-built block DE-693-705 (which includes DE-701) carried Combustion Engineering boilers. A 1943-44 steam ship of this plant would have carried era-standard asbestos applications: boiler and fireroom insulation, steam-line and turbine lagging, gaskets and packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding: no contract specification, material schedule, or survey for DE-701 itself was located. The boiler-manufacturer block map is navypedia-sourced and unverified against contract documents. Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure.

  5. [5]CourtListener API v4 sweep, 2026-09-29: "USS Osmus" / "Osmus" / "DE-701" across opinions (type=o) and dockets (type=r), with asbestos co-occurrence narrowing [court_record]

    Finding
CourtListener sweep located no qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull. "USS Osmus" (exact) returned 0 opinion and 0 docket hits. Bare "Osmus" produced 63 opinion and 160 docket hits - all surname collisions (parties/debtors named Osmus, e.g. Swaters v. Osmus 11th Cir. 2009; Osmus v. City of Oklahoma City 1977). "DE-701" produced 7 opinion and 82 docket hits - all identifier collisions (docket/entry/document strings); narrowing by asbestos co-occurrence returned 0 opinions and a single docket, Powell v. Home Depot, 9:07-cv-80435 (S.D. Fla.), a patent-infringement action - non-qualifying.

    Limitations
Zero-qualifying sweep: absence of indexed opinions/dockets is not proof no suit ever named the hull - state-court and unindexed matters are outside CourtListener coverage. Collision classification rests on case-name/cause inspection of result sets, not per-docket full-text review.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the steam-plant design is era-consistent with asbestos use, and scrapping (1973-74) predates ACM-inventory practice. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
