Name-collision control: DANFS Vol. V p. 185 lists three distinct Navy vessels named Ostrich - I (SP-1249, 35-ft Elco motorboat on loan 1917-1918), II (AMc-51, Accentor-class coastal minesweeper, Herreshoff, 1941-1946; separately recorded as uss-ostrich-amc51, batch-1587), and III (YMS-430/AMS-29/MSC(O)-29, this record). Dates, builder, and disposal of AMc-51 (struck 21 January 1946; to Maritime Commission 21 March 1947) must not be merged into this record.

    Limitations
Inventory entry only - the 1944-45 logbooks themselves were not reviewed and their digitization is unconfirmed. Covers only the first ~9 months of commissioned service; SL-44 has no AMS-29 or MSC(O)-29 entries, but the National Archives Catalog holds digitized MSC(O)-29 deck logs for January 1956-March 1958 (see ev-uss-ostrich-ams29-12). Deck logs record operations, not materials; existence of any asbestos-relevant content is unknown.

Correction: a secondary summary (Wikipedia infobox, 'USS Ostrich (AMS-29)', accessed 2026-09-24) gives 'Decommissioned: 2 April 1946' and 'In service: 10 October 1946'. DANFS does not support either: 2 April 1946 is the arrival date at San Pedro; DANFS records reduced commission at Charleston after 3 July 1946 and restoration to full commission on 10 December 1946, with decommissioning only in January 1958 at Green Cove Springs. The same secondary source gives draft 6 ft 1 in and speed 13 knots vs DANFS 6 ft and 12 knots. DANFS values are adopted.

Era context: peer-reviewed history documents extensive use of asbestos as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding in the 1940s, when World War II expansion drove an unprecedented rise in asbestos utilization - the era in which YMS-430 was built (1943-1944). The YMS-1 class is generally described as wooden-hulled and diesel-powered (no boilers or steam plant), which, if applicable to this hull, would remove the era's dominant shipboard application (boiler and steam-piping thermal insulation).

DANFS contains no materials information; the NARA 1945 action report, 1951 personnel diary, and 1956-1958 deck-log pages reviewed contain no asbestos or insulation-material entries; CourtListener opinion and RECAP searches by exact name and every hull designation returned only token noise and figurative 'ostrich' usages (classified name collisions); builder-level searches ('Tacoma Boat' / 'Tacoma Boatbuilding' + asbestos) returned no case alleging exposure at the builder or aboard its hulls; 'Southern Shipbuilding' + Jacksonville + asbestos returned zero opinions.

    Finding
Contemporary action report places YMS-430 in Task Unit 52.6.4 (six YMS and three LCI; flagship YMS-412, unit commander Lt. John H. Steinhart, USNR) for the moored-mine clearance sweep of Kii Suido, Honshu, Japan, operating from Wakayama Ko / Wakanoura Wan anchorages. YMS-430 is listed in company on 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 and 24 September 1945 (not in the 12 September sweep). On 14 September she fouled her gear in her starboard screw and rudder and returned to anchorage for repairs; on 15 September she fouled a drifting Japanese Mark 93 Mod. 1 mine in her gear, cut the otter and float free, and the mine was sunk by gunfire from YMS-407. On 20 September she was detached to sweep an assigned area independently. The unit rode out a severe typhoon at Osaki Wan 16-19 September (no unit-four ship rendered inoperative) and left for Nagoya/Ise Wan on 26 September 1945.

The day digit of the Mark 93 mine entry is overstruck ('1?'); 15 September is inferred from its position between the 14 and 16 September entries. The same November 1945 action report states as a class-general conclusion that 'YMS vessels are not suitable for any work in typhoon areas' because of 'their wooden hulls and inability to ride heavy seas,' and recommends that the BuShips progressive maintenance schedules be followed. This is a contemporary Navy statement that the YMS type had wooden hulls; it does not describe YMS-430's machinery or materials.

Class-level statement by a unit commander about YMS vessels generally, in a report that names YMS-430 as a unit member; it corroborates wooden-hull construction for the type but says nothing about propulsion (diesel vs other), insulation, or any asbestos-containing material. Must not be read as a ship-specific materials finding; the wooden-hull/diesel inference in ev-uss-ostrich-ams29-05 remains class context only.

DANFS gives 'decommissioned in January 1958' and says she proceeded to Green Cove Springs in December 1957; the January 1958 log title page instead shows her commencing 1 January 1958 at U.S. Naval Minecraft Base, Charleston, S.C., and ending 31 January 1958 at U.S. Naval Station, Green Cove Springs, already attached to the U.S. Atlantic Reserve Fleet. Entries on 13-26 February record her docked there 'receiving miscellaneous services from the dock'; the 15 February entry adds 'all machinery is out of commission.' Finding
NARA's list 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' (page last reviewed 2024-06-26) contains no entry for Ostrich, YMS-430, AMS-29, or MSCO-29. It lists 19 other YMS-origin hulls (e.g., Egret YMS-136, Siskin YMS-425, Turkey YMS-444, Waxbill YMS-479), none of which is this vessel.

    Limitations
Negative for online digitized availability only - it does not mean NARA holds no deck logs for this hull (undigitized RG 24 logs may exist and would be filed under the designation in effect: YMS-430 for 1944-1947). Per NARA's own guide (ev-05), deck logs would in any case provide no direct asbestos evidence. No asbestos finding.

    Limitations
Identity, construction, and spec data only, verified visually against the page scan (OCR renders the hull as 'YMS^30'/'YMS-JfSO'; the printed page reads YMS-430). DANFS names no propulsion machinery and contains no asbestos, insulation, or materials information; this row supports no asbestos claim.

    Limitations
Operational chronology only; DANFS names no shipyard availability, overhaul, or refit for this hull (Charleston 1946 is described as immobilization/reduced commission, not yard work) - but NARA deck logs document a February 1958 drydock period at Southern Shipbuilding Corp., Jacksonville (ev-uss-ostrich-ams29-11), and date decommissioning to 5 March 1958, not January (ev-uss-ostrich-ams29-10). No asbestos information; supports no asbestos claim. Buyer and scrapping location are not named.
