- Finding
- DANFS 'Parrakeet II (YMS-434)': YMS-434 was laid down 30 October 1943 by J. M. Martinac Ship Building Corp., Tacoma, Wash.; launched 10 May 1944; sponsored by Miss Dorinda Rathbone; commissioned 15 November 1944. Upon completion of fitting out she was assigned to the U.S. Pacific Fleet and operated in the Aleutians and off the northwestern coast of the United States. Reclassified AMS-30 and named Parrakeet 18 February 1947; decommissioned 21 May 1947 at Puget Sound; struck from the Naval Register 23 June 1947; sold 9 October 1947 and renamed Dan. She stranded in Queen Charlotte Sound, B.C., 30 March 1949 and was declared a total loss.

- The live NHHC page returned HTTP 503 on every direct fetch this session (history.navy.mil unavailable to this environment; hazegray.org DNS failure; navsource.org DNS failure / navsource.net egress-blocked). Text was obtained only as search-engine index excerpts attributed to this official page, not a direct read - carried unverified pending re-check against the live page. Establishes identity, builder, key dates, and in-scope Navy service (commissioned 1944-11-15; decommissioned 1947-05-21). The operational summary ('Aleutians and off the northwestern coast') is incomplete against the NARA war diaries - see correction row ev-04. The strike, sale, renaming and 1949 stranding sentences were surfaced by search-engine summaries attributed to this DANFS page; a parallel session's excerpt of the same page did not include them, so they are the weakest part of this row. The 1949 stranding occurred in private (non-Navy) service as 'Dan'. Contains no asbestos, insulation, machinery-material, or hazardous-material information; supports no asbestos claim.

- NARA RG 38 'World War II War Diaries, Other Operational Records and Histories' holds monthly war diaries of USS YMS-434 for February through August 1945 (digitized). Pages read directly: February 1945 - underway 1 Feb in company with LST 851 from San Diego to Pearl Harbor; arrived Pearl Harbor 2 Feb; 3-12 Feb moored in Navy Yard, Pearl Harbor, undergoing alterations to radar and radio equipment; 13 Feb underway in T.U. 16.8.5 escorting convoy PD-297 to Eniwetok with YMS 90, 91, 388, 423 and 431, attached to ComMinPac; moored Eniwetok 27 Feb; departed 28 Feb for Ulithi in T.U. 96.3.22. April 1945 - with sweep unit 15 (YMS 423, 90, 91, 388, 431, PGM 18), task unit 52.6.4, off the western coast of Kerama Retto and Okinawa (area Zebra off Pt. Bolo); repeated general quarters for air attack; 3 Apr searched for a floating mine off western Okinawa (negative). August 1945 - attached to M squadron 105 (CTF 95.4 mine flotilla); moored Unten Ko, then Buckner Bay, Okinawa; 6-11 Aug transited to San Pedro Bay, Leyte; 13-14 Aug anchored close by repair ship ARG-10 (Palawan) to carry out repairs to ship.

The Pearl Harbor Navy Yard work is described only as radar/radio alterations and the ARG-10 repairs are unscoped; neither entry mentions insulation, lagging, machinery overhaul, or any material, and neither supports any asbestos claim or individual exposure. - Finding
- Corrections and discrepancies logged: (a) Service area - DANFS summarizes post-fitting-out service as the Aleutians and the U.S. northwest coast, but NARA war diaries and an AA action report place YMS-434 in the western Pacific in 1945 (Pearl Harbor, Eniwetok, Ulithi transit, Kerama Retto/Okinawa sweeps and AA action, Buckner Bay, Leyte). The record treats DANFS as incomplete, not wrong; Aleutian/northwest service is carried only as a DANFS statement and its dates are unknown. (b) Name spelling - the prompt listing 'Parakeet' is corrected to the official 'Parrakeet' (DANFS 'Parrakeet II'); the vessel_id/file slug 'uss-parakeet-ams30' is retained as assigned. (c) The HyperWar YMS tabulation's 'Comm. 1942-5' entry for YMS-434 is a class-wide range (1942-45) repeated on every YMS line, not a commissioning date for this hull; DANFS 1944-11-15 is adopted.

(2) Remaining war-diary file units (March, June, July 1945) and remaining pages of those read. (3) Deck logs: NARA guidance says Navy deck logs are cataloged by ship name and hull designation; catalog keyword searches for 'YMS-434', 'YMS 434', 'Parrakeet' and 'deck log' returned war diaries and the muster roll but no deck-log file unit this session. Deck logs would be expected under 'YMS-434' (1944-1947) and 'Parrakeet (AMS-30)' (Feb-May 1947). (4) Builder construction records (J. M. Martinac, Tacoma) and the 1947 disposal/sale file.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for this hull under any designation (YMS-434, Parrakeet AMS-30, merchant 'Dan'): no asbestos survey, abatement record, hazardous-material disclosure, machinery or insulation specification, or disposal/sale condition report was found. The war-diary pages read record yard and tender work (Pearl Harbor Navy Yard radar/radio alterations, Feb 1945; repairs alongside ARG-10 Palawan, Aug 1945) without naming any material. The hull left Navy custody in 1947 and was lost in 1949, so no present-day abatement record would be expected; the asbestos question is historical only (builder workforce 1943-44, crews 1944-47, yard/tender work periods).
