- DANFS record for this hull: laid down 23 July (year reads '1933' in the transcription - see gaps) by Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Wash.; launched 6 May 1937, sponsored by Miss Elizabeth P. Patterson; commissioned 22 September 1937, Comdr. Francis T. Spellman in command. Moored at Pearl Harbor 7 December 1941 - gunners downed one enemy plane. Overhaul at Mare Island Naval Shipyard April-May 1942. Guarded Guadalcanal transports 7-8 August 1942 (four torpedo planes downed 8 August); Battle of Savo Island 9 August - first Allied ship to raise the alarm ('Warning! Warning! Strange ships entering the harbor!'), hit by a 5-inch salvo, 10 killed and 8 wounded, No. 4 gun knocked out. Collision with USS McCalla night of 29-30 September 1943 - 3 killed, 10 injured, bow nearly severed; false bow at Espiritu Santo; Mare Island Naval Shipyard for reconstruction arriving 22 December 1943, back to sea 8 March 1944. Marianas (Saipan 15 June, Battle of the Philippine Sea), Tinian, Yap bombardment 8 September, Palaus to 9 October; Leyte Gulf and Cape Engano 24-25 October 1944; Lingayen Gulf January 1945; Iwo Jima 19 February-10 March (rescued 106 USS Bismarck Sea survivors 21 February); Okinawa March-June 1945. Arrived New York Naval Shipyard 11 October 1945; decommissioned there 8 November 1945; struck from the Naval Vessel Register 25 February 1947; sold for scrapping 18 August 1947 to Northern Metals Co., Philadelphia, Pa. Thirteen battle stars for WWII service.

- Puget Sound Navy Yard construction trades 1935-37; wartime crew (design complement 158); Mare Island and Pearl Harbor overhaul/repair workers; New York Naval Shipyard inactivation workers
- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The DANFS specification block lists class as 'Gridley' (the navy-yard-built Bagley group was a Gridley-design derivative) and the transcription reads 'laid down 23 July 1933' - inconsistent with the class authorization and all sister-ship laydowns (July-October 1935); 1935 is carried per NavSource and is noted in gaps. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

Laid down by Puget Sound Navy Yard July 23, 1935; launched May 6, 1937; commissioned September 22, 1937; decommissioned November 8, 1945; stricken February 25, 1947; sold August 18, 1947 to Northern Metals, Philadelphia, and broken up. Photographs credited to NHHC show DD-392 and sister USS Jarvis (DD-393) together in the building dock at Puget Sound Navy Yard before their 6 May 1937 launch.

- NavSource is a volunteer-edited naval history archive (secondary), not an official record - it corroborates DANFS dates and supplies class/machinery figures DANFS omits. Contains no asbestos information. Its July 23, 1935 laydown is class-consistent (all Bagley sisters laid down July-October 1935) and is the date carried; the DANFS transcription's '1933' is in gaps.

- Finding
- A hull-specific Booklet of General Plans for DD-392 survives in NARA Record Group 19 (Bureau of Ships) Alphabetical Series of Ship Engineering Drawings, digitized and mirrored via DPLA/Wikimedia Commons. The booklet includes inboard/outboard profiles and deck plans; per the NARA series description, hull construction, mechanical, and electrical drawings are rarely included. The February 28, 1944 Mare Island update aligns with the documented post-collision bow reconstruction (December 1943-March 1944).

- Limitations
- Plans record only - profiles and deck plans of this series do not normally carry insulation or materials schedules, so the booklet is a lead toward hull-level specification records (e.g., RG 19 General Information Books, machinery specifications), not asbestos documentation in itself. Individual sheets were not examined for material callouts.

- Finding
- Era/yard inference: a Gridley-group (Bagley-class) destroyer built at a navy yard 1935-37 with a 49,000-shp geared-steam-turbine plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation, lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. Builder Puget Sound Navy Yard and the documented overhaul/reconstruction yard (Mare Island, April-May 1942 overhaul and December 1943-March 1944 bow rebuild) are documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset for asbestos-containing products and industrial-hygiene conditions; Pearl Harbor voyage repairs (early 1942) and New York Naval Shipyard inactivation (October-November 1945) are additional yard-contact periods.

- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - the ship-specific findings for this hull are ev-01 through ev-03 (history and plans) and ev-05 through ev-07 (litigation sweep and negative finding); this row adds context, not an independent ship-specific finding. Yard-level asbestos documentation at Puget Sound and Mare Island postdates this hull's construction period (study periods 1970 and 1998).

- Finding
- Two asbestos dockets contain the string 'USS Patterson' in indexed document text. Both are MDL-875-era asbestos personal-injury dockets whose sampled indexed documents include 'Declaration of James M. Haddock' filings by defendant Owens-Illinois, Inc. (Deliberali ECF 8; Siegfried ECF 51) - Navy ship/product declarations of the type that append schedules of vessels associated with a defendant's insulation products. A follow-up query co-occurrence test ('Patterson' + 'Kaylo', type=r) returns both dockets among its 218 hits, consistent with the Owens-Illinois Kaylo ship-schedule context. Whether 'USS Patterson' appears in such a ship schedule (and, if so, whether the entry identifies DD-392 by hull number or instead the Knox-class DE/FF-1061) is unverified; document retrieval was not performed.

- Limitations
- Docket-index text match only, classified at the lowest stage (unadjudicated document text). The string 'USS Patterson' is hull-ambiguous: three Navy ships bore the name (DD-36, DD-392, DE/FF-1061); plaintiff service eras in 2018-filed cases fit DE/FF-1061 (1970-1991) at least as readily as WWII-era DD-392. Establishes nothing about materials aboard this hull. Pleading/exhibit-stage references are allegations, not findings.

Cal. 2:18-cv-01575): asbestos dockets containing 'USS Patterson' in indexed document text with unresolved hull attribution (archival leads, ev-05); Bergstrom v. United States Navy (W.D. Wash. 2:21-cv-00055): Administrative Procedure Act / 10 U.S.C. 1552 military-records correction suit, not asbestos - other litigation; 'DD-392' docket hits (Santiago v. Russo habeas; Archdiocese of New Orleans bankruptcy; SIPC v. Madoff exhibits; Bergstrom admin record) are string-fragment/name collisions - no result as asbestos litigation. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement record, materials inventory, museum/transfer hazmat disclosure, published opinion, or docketed case verifiably naming DD-392 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The one VA BVA decision surfaced naming a USS Patterson identifies DE-1061 (the Knox-class frigate) - a different hull (name collision).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the ship was scrapped in 1947, decades before ACM surveys or transfer-disclosure regimes existed, so the disclosure channels that produce hull-level records for preserved or recently disposed ships never applied here. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
