- NavSource record for this hull: laid down 25 January 1943 by the Defoe Shipbuilding Co., Bay City, MI; launched 10 May 1943; commissioned 18 November 1943; ENS Kirk Douglas, D-V(G), USNR served aboard as Communications Officer 18 November 1943 - 24 February 1944; decommissioned 23 July 1946 and laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group; the Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949 still lists the planned decommissioning/reserve placement; fate unknown. Photograph dated fall 1945 shows the vessel anchored alongside PC-1243 at Chi Chi Jima, Bonin Islands (courtesy of Sam S. Rice, USNR, Ret., who served in PC-1139). Specifications: 295 t. light / 450 t. full; 173'8" x 23' x 10'10"; 20.2 kt; complement 65; one 3"/50 DP mount, one 40 mm, three 20 mm, two rocket launchers, four depth-charge projectors, two depth-charge tracks; two 1,440 bhp GM 16-258S diesels, Farrel-Birmingham single reduction gear, two shafts. Commanding officers: LTJG John O. McCormick, USNR (from 18 November 1943); LTJG D. P. Atkinson, USNR (1945). Page states 'There is no DANFS History currently available for PC-1139.'

[5]U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, VA News '#VeteranOfTheDay Navy Veteran Kirk Douglas' (March 21, 2019; Veterans History Project-based profile) [other_primary]
- Locator
- VA News article, paragraphs 4-6 (PC-1139 assignment, depth-charge accident, 1944 discharge)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Official U.S. government account of a named crew member aboard this hull: Kirk Douglas enlisted in 1941, trained as an antisubmarine-warfare communications officer, was assigned to PC-1139 and sent to the Pacific, serving as gunnery and communications officer hunting Japanese submarines. During an attack on a sonar contact a crewman accidentally launched a live depth charge instead of a marker; the detonation hurled PC-1139 into the air and Douglas was thrown against the ship, suffering abdominal injuries. At Balboa Hospital, San Diego, chronic amoebic dysentery was also found, and he was discharged in 1944 at the rank of lieutenant junior grade.

- USS PC-1139 crew (1943-44)
- Limitations
- Veterans History Project-based feature article; the piece prints the accident date as 'Feb. 7, 1943', which is inconsistent with the hull's 18 November 1943 commissioning and Douglas's documented 18 Nov 1943 - 24 Feb 1944 window aboard (NavSource) - the consistent reading is 1944; carried in gaps. Vessel-history fact only - this record makes no exposure claim for any individual, including Douglas.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Reputable-press corroboration of Douglas's service aboard this hull, including a documented attribution discrepancy: 'Some press accounts report that Ensign Douglas ... was assigned to Patrol Craft 1137, a PC-146 (later Bluffton)-class sub chaser, but in his autobiographies he said he reported to PC-1139.' Repeats the VA account of the live depth-charge accident aboard PC-1139 and the 1944 LTJG discharge; the embedded photo caption credits the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command.

The PC-1137 variant attribution exists in press but is not adopted here - NavSource's service window, VA, and Douglas's own autobiographies all give PC-1139. No asbestos content.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A 173-ft steel submarine chaser built January-November 1943 at a Michigan yard sits inside the documented Navy asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a diesel patrol craft of this type and period were engine and exhaust-system lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, thermal insulation in machinery spaces, and deck coverings - concentrated in the confined engineering spaces of a small hull. As a diesel-engined craft she carried no steam plant, so the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.
