NavSource timeline for this hull: laid down 21 September 1943 by the Defoe Shipbuilding Co., Bay City, Michigan; launched 15 November 1943; commissioned USS PC-1146, 13 July 1944; decommissioned January 1947 and laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group; transferred to France in 1951 and named Glaive (P 632); transferred to South Vietnam in 1956 and renamed RVNS Tay Cây (HQ 05); struck from the Naval Register 10 July 1965 and scrapped. Call sign Nan-George-Xray-William. Specifications: 280 t (lt) / 450 t (fl); 173'8" x 23' x 10'10"; 20.2 kt; complement 65; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, one 40mm mount, three 20mm guns, four depth-charge projectors, two depth-charge tracks, two rocket launchers; propulsion two 1,440 bhp General Motors 16-278A diesel engines, Farrel-Birmingham single reduction gear, two shafts. A Marine Nationale photograph dated 10 April 1951 shows Glaive departing Bremerton, WA, in company with the sister ex-PC Trident (P 634), placing this hull's turnover departure at Bremerton in April 1951. NavSource explicitly notes no DANFS history exists for PC-1146.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS and its photograph captions are archival. Contains no asbestos content. The French-name attribution on this page (Glaive) conflicts with French-record sources that map this hull to Trident - see ev-uss-pc-1146-pc1146-09 and gaps; the 1965 RVN end-state is consistent across sources. Finding
DANFS's Yaupon (ATA-218) entry documents this hull's wartime western-Pacific service: on 10 September 1945 Yaupon, towing the floating workshop YR-62, 'sailed for Okinawa five days later in company with the submarine chaser PC-1146 and the water barge YW-102,' with Yaupon's Lt. Lane as officer in tactical command. During 15-16 September 1945 the formation entered heavy squalls building to a typhoon; when YW-102 'lost fuel suction and dropped astern. PC-1146 stood by the hobbled yardcraft until the latter could resume the voyage.' All units hove-to; 'With PC-1146 pounding in the heavy seas, her commanding officer sought permission to proceed independently, which Lt. Lane granted immediately.' Winds reached Force 12 with gusts logged at Force 14-15 before Yaupon anchored in Buckner Bay, Okinawa, 17 September 1945.

PC-1146 crew at SCTC Miami (January 1945)
    Limitations
Ship-specific placement, but a crew memoir compiled by a veteran rather than an official record - treated as corroborating narrative. Establishes the hull was at SCTC Miami in early January 1945, between her July 1944 commissioning and the documented September 1945 Ulithi departure; the interim movements are undocumented (see gaps). PC-1146 crew (postwar Pacific return, May 1946)
    Limitations
Crew memoir, not an official log; the year 1946 follows the narrative's sequence after its 20 April 1946 departure from Guam for Eniwetok. Corroborates that the hull returned from the western Pacific via Pearl Harbor in May 1946, consistent with the January 1947 Columbia River reserve-fleet lay-up. No asbestos content.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era inference: a steel-hulled PC-461-class submarine chaser built 1943-44 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a vessel of this type and period were thermal insulation and lagging on diesel exhaust runs, machinery and piping lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, deck coverings, and fireproofing. As a twin-screw diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but the small-ship confined-space dynamic applies.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1943-44) and U.S. custody era (1944-65, including reserve).

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS PC-1146 was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated helper reported the shared daily quota exhausted (~3.4 h to reset); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and essentially no asbestos content at all for this hull - even the law-firm marketing 'asbestos aboard' listicles that cover named warships do not carry PC-1146.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (throttled, not run). Deck logs and the digitized muster rolls (NAID 192287295) are the leads for crew identification. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
CONFLICT: sources split on this hull's French-service name. NavSource (with Wikipedia escorteur lists and seaforces.org) maps PC-1146 to Glaive (P 632) and sister PC-1143 to Trident (P 634). French naval-history sources - fringant.net's quoted French Navy service extract ('TRIDENT: Escorteur cotier ex US PC 1146. Transfere a la marine nationale le 2 mars 1951'), uboat.net, and postenavalemilitaire's Trident article - map PC-1146 to Trident and PC-1143 to Glaive (P 632); fringant's Glaive page carries PC-1143's exact US build dates (laid down 17 April 1943, launched 25 September 1943, commissioned 16 May 1944). The French mapping also yields the tidy pennant sequence PC-1143 -> P 632, PC-1144 -> P 633 (Mousquet - uncontested), PC-1146 -> P 634. All sources agree the hull transferred to France in 1951, served in Indochina, and became RVNS Tay Cây (HQ 05) in 1956 - only the French name/pennant is disputed. Carried per NavSource (this record's timeline source); conflict documented, not silently resolved.

    Limitations
The Indochina combat narrative that fringant's Trident extract attaches to that name (Operation Eole, the Quang Khe post defense, Operation Camargue, 1951-53) belongs to this hull only if the Trident mapping is correct; it is NOT asserted for PC-1146 in this record. fringant.net is a French naval-history compilation quoting period service records - near-primary for the French period but not an English-registry source. postenavalemilitaire is itself internally inconsistent (its list maps Glaive to PC-1146 while its Trident article maps Trident to PC-1146).
