    Finding
The PC-473 page identifies this hull as a PC-461-class submarine chaser, laid down 18 August 1941 by Defoe Shipbuilding Co. at Bay City, Michigan; launched 19 November 1941; commissioned USS PC-473 on 9 December 1941; assigned during World War II to the European theater, Moroccan Sea Frontier, and Mediterranean; transferred to France at Casablanca on 7 July 1944 as L'Ardent (W 39), later reclassified P-653; and lost after collision with SS Empire Abbey in Cora Harbor, Morocco, on 15 February 1945. The page states that the stern section blew up on 20 February 1945 and that the Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949 listed the loss date as 10 March 1945; it gives the strike date as 10 March 1945.

    Limitations
NavSource is a secondary compilation and the page itself states that no DANFS history is available for PC-473. This row establishes the ship's identity and reported service/disposition history, not asbestos content, exposure, causation, or legal eligibility.

    Finding
The National Archives' Navy deck-log finding aid lists PC-473 with a commission/start date of 12/9/1941 and an end date of 7/7/1944. The end date corresponds to the transfer date reported by the PC-473 history page and independently bounds the U.S. Navy deck-log coverage identified by this finding aid.

    Limitations
This is a finding aid listing date coverage, not the deck-log content itself. It does not describe materials, asbestos, work practices, individual exposure, or the later French-service period.

    Finding type

    Finding
GAO reported that it reviewed the use of asbestos in Navy ships and Navy shipyard asbestos-protection efforts. The report states that in 1975 the Navy removed and replaced with nonasbestos materials insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for repairs, and that the policy was modified in 1979 to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas. This provides Navy-wide era context for a 1941-built Navy vessel, not a finding about PC-473.

    Population
Navy shipyard workers and Navy vessels covered by the program review
    Limitations
Program-level evidence only. GAO did not identify PC-473, its builder, its spaces, or any component aboard this hull; this row cannot establish that asbestos was installed aboard PC-473 or that any person was exposed.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, donation condition, material specification, or other qualifying asbestos record was located in the authoritative sources reviewed for PC-473. The record therefore remains class/era-level for asbestos documentation, with no flagship evidence.

    Limitations
This is a bounded negative finding, not proof that asbestos was absent. CourtListener was not successfully queried because the authenticated helper returned the fleet-wide pacing stand-down on all four required base queries; litigation is an open gap rather than a negative result. NARA deck-log content and Navy construction/material files were not individually reviewed.
