    Finding
NavSource documents this hull as a PC-461-class submarine chaser laid down 20 August 1941 by Defoe Shipbuilding Co., Bay City, Michigan; launched 15 September 1941; commissioned USS PC-474 on 11 February 1942 at Algiers Naval Station, New Orleans, Louisiana; assigned to the European theater in the Moroccan and Eastern Sea Frontiers; decommissioned 1 June 1944 and transferred to France as L'Indiscret (W 32) at Casablanca; later reclassified P-622; leased for mercantile trade in the 1950s; struck from the Navy Register 25 January 1960; fate unknown. Its specification block gives 450 tons displacement, 173 feet 8 inches length, 23 feet beam, 10 feet 10 inches draft, 20.2 knots, complement 65, and two General Motors 16-258S diesel engines driving two shafts.

    Population
Defoe construction trades (1941); U.S. Navy crew (1942-1944); French and later mercantile-service populations unknown
    Limitations
Ship-specific identity, history, and specifications only; the page does not document asbestos, material content, exposure, abatement, or litigation. The source explicitly reports the later fate as unknown, which is carried without speculation.

    Finding
The National Archives ship-number list records PC-474 with a commission date of 2/11/1942 and a decommission date of 6/1/1944, corroborating the NavSource dates used for this hull.

GAO HRD-80-2, pp. 10-12 and 21-22; Navy statements on shipboard applications
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
The GAO report reproduces Navy statements that asbestos was used in Navy shipboard thermal insulation for machinery, equipment, and piping, and in shipboard piping-system gaskets and packing, pipe-hanger liners, deck coverings, and equipment brakes. PC-474's 1941-42 construction and 1942-44 Navy service fall within the historical Navy shipbuilding and operating era addressed by this program context.

    Population
Navy shipbuilding, repair, and operating populations at program level
    Limitations
Class/era and Navy-program context only. The report does not name PC-474, does not establish that any listed product was installed aboard this hull, and does not establish quantity, condition, individual exposure, causation, or present-day asbestos status.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The accessible PC-474 archival record states that there is no DANFS history currently available for PC-474. The record supplies the available construction, service, and disposition summary but no material or asbestos documentation.

    2026-10-03 search status
    Limitations
This is an access/coverage finding, not proof that no Navy archival record exists. NARA, Bureau of Ships, and Naval History holdings for PC-474 remain archival leads; the absence of a located DANFS entry is not a negative asbestos finding.

  6. [6]Official-source sweep and required authenticated CourtListener helper searches; see search_ledger [other_primary]
    Locator
    search_ledger rows sl-uss-pc-474-pc474-01 through -08
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material specification, or other primary asbestos record for USS PC-474 was located in the sources searched. The required CourtListener base searches were invoked through the authenticated helper for exact-name opinion, exact-name docket, hull-number opinion, and hull-number docket; the helper returned authenticated-request diagnostics but no usable result payload. Litigation status is therefore an access gap, not a negative result, and no litigation hit is classified or carried.

    2026-10-03
    Limitations
A negative public-source search does not prove absence of asbestos aboard or absence of litigation. CourtListener was not supplemented with asbestos-qualified variants because no base-query overflow was available to establish the permitted condition; no anonymous or raw API request was made. Firecrawl official-source searches were blocked by a multi-hour keyless quota wait and fallback research is disclosed in the report.
