[2]NavSource Online, Submarine Chaser Photo Archive: PC-489, including Sullivan Dry Dock and Repair Co. chronology, specifications, and captioned ship photographs. [other_primary]

- PC-489 page: chronology/specifications block and photo-caption table
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource reports that PC-489 was laid down 17 March 1941 by Sullivan Dry Dock and Repair Co., Brooklyn, New York; launched 20 December 1941; commissioned at the Brooklyn Navy Yard 14 July 1942; decommissioned 21 December 1945; struck 8 January 1946; transferred to the Maritime Commission 5 November 1948; and sold for scrap to W. B. Fountain of Ingleside, Norfolk, Virginia. Its page identifies the vessel as a PC-461-class submarine chaser and reports a 65-person complement, two Hooven-Owen-Rentschler R-99DA diesel engines, Westinghouse single-reduction gear, and two shafts. Captioned photographs identify a 18 July 1942 New York Navy Yard image as a Sullivan Dry Dock Co. photograph and depict the hull in drydock, on convoy escort, and during depth-charge activity.

- Sullivan construction trades (1941-42); ship's company during 1942-45 service (complement reported as 65)
- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer photo archive and secondary compilation, not an official Navy registry; the chronology and specifications were not independently verified against a Navy construction or commissioning record in this session. The page contains no asbestos survey, product identification, abatement record, or exposure finding.

- PDF p. 69, entry 'PC-489 7/14/1942 12/21/1945'
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 lists PC-489 with logbook coverage dated 14 July 1942 through 21 December 1945. This is an official archival trail for operational records of the hull during its full reported commissioned period.

- Population
- PC-489 ship's company during the listed logbook period
- Limitations
- The list identifies logbook coverage, not the contents of the logs; it does not itself establish commissioning or decommissioning, materials aboard, asbestos presence, exposure, or any individual's duty. The underlying logbooks were not reviewed this session.

[4]National Archives Catalog, 'USS PC-489 - War Diary, 5/1-31/43,' NAID 134219559, Records of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, World War II War Diaries, Other Operational Records and Histories. [other_primary]

- NARA NAID 134219559; title 'USS PC-489 - War Diary, 5/1-31/43'
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's catalog identifies a ship-specific May 1943 war diary for USS PC-489 (NAID 134219559). The record is a direct archival lead for operational history and any contemporaneous references to repairs or material work.

- Population
- PC-489 ship's company, May 1943
- Limitations
- The current Catalog page did not render record metadata to this research environment; its title, date range, provenance, and NAID were cross-checked in the DPLA record that links to NARA. The diary contents were not reviewed. This record establishes neither asbestos presence nor exposure.

- GAO HRD-80-2 Highlights and Full Report listing
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO's Navy-wide 1979 review addressed asbestos use in Navy ships and stated that other Navy ships contained large quantities of asbestos insulation; it described the Navy's 1975 and 1979 policies for removal and replacement of asbestos insulation. PC-489's documented 1942-45 logbook period predates those policies.

- 1975-1979 policies; report published 1979
- Population
- Navy shipyard workers and Navy vessels addressed by GAO's 1979 review
- Limitations
- This is Navy-wide, post-service context based on reviews at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, not a survey of PC-489. It does not identify asbestos on this hull, any material type or quantity, an exposure pathway, or legal eligibility. Direct GAO page/PDF requests returned HTTP 403 in this environment; the live official search result was used to verify the report summary and the access gap is logged.

[6]Batch-7864 authenticated CourtListener search ledger for USS PC-489 / PC-489, four required base searches invoked through cl-auth-search.py. [court_record]
- Locator
- Search ledger rows sl-uss-pc-489-pc489-05 through sl-uss-pc-489-pc489-08
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No CourtListener result can be classified from this session. The authenticated helper was invoked once for each required base query: exact-name opinion and docket searches for "USS PC-489", and hull-number opinion and docket searches for "PC-489", each with limit 20. In each invocation the helper confirmed an authenticated request but did not return JSON before the execution harness ended; therefore no hit, no-result, or overflow conclusion is recorded and no asbestos-qualified variant was run.

- Limitations
- This is an incomplete litigation sweep, not a finding that no litigation exists. Because results were unavailable, it establishes no exposure allegation, product identification, adjudication, or disposition. The four base queries should be re-run via the authenticated helper when results can be retained and reviewed; do not run variants unless a completed base result overflows 20.
