[2]NavSource Naval History, PC-491 page (live page; page reports no DANFS history currently available) [other_primary]
- Locator
- PC-491 page, opening lifecycle and specifications lists
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource's PC-491 page identifies this hull as a PC-461-class submarine chaser laid down by Dravo Corporation at Neville Island, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 9 May 1941; launched 6 December 1941; commissioned at New Orleans, Louisiana, on 13 April 1942; struck from the Naval Register on 13 December 1946; transferred to the State Department's Foreign Liquidation Commission in January 1948; sold for scrap to T. Y. Fong on 13 February 1948; and departed Subic Bay Naval Base for the scrap yard on 10 September 1949. It lists a complement of 65 and two Hooven-Owens-Rentschler R-99DA diesel engines with Westinghouse single-reduction gear and two shafts.

- Population
- Construction workforce, Navy crew, and post-service disposal personnel; individuals not identified
- Limitations
- This is a ship-history reference, not a hull survey, maintenance record, asbestos inventory, abatement record, or litigation finding. NavSource expressly says no DANFS history is currently available for PC-491; the listed construction, complement, propulsion, and disposition facts have not been independently confirmed here from a primary Navy record. It establishes nothing about asbestos content, individual exposure, causation, or legal eligibility.

[3]Research ledger: NHHC ship-history collection; NARA Department of the Navy research guide; live NavSource PC-491 page; CourtListener authenticated exact-name docket query [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger entries sl-uss-pc-491-pc491-01 through -04
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Completed authoritative-source and live-source checks located no ship-specific public asbestos survey, abatement record, material inventory, or official disposal-hazard record for USS PC-491. The completed authenticated CourtListener docket query for the exact phrase 'USS PC-491' returned zero results. A qualifying asbestos-litigation record was therefore not located in the completed work.

- Population
- Unknown
- Limitations
- This is a bounded negative finding, not proof that asbestos was absent or that litigation never existed. CourtListener opinion and hull-number base queries were not completed because the required authenticated helper repeatedly reported fleet-wide pacing; Firecrawl also reported keyless-quota exhaustion. No inference about material presence may be drawn from construction era, class, diesel propulsion, or builder.

[4]National Archives, 'Department of the Navy Records' research guide [other_primary]
- Locator
- Guided Research Topics: Navy Deck Logs and Navy Muster Rolls; introductory access note
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's Department of the Navy research guide identifies Navy deck logs and muster rolls among its guided research topics and explains that some Navy records are only available in paper or microfilm at NARA locations. Those records are a lead for independently documenting PC-491's operations, crew, repair periods, and disposal records.

- Study period
- NARA access guide, accessed 2026-10-03
- Population
- Potentially Navy crew and repair/disposal workers; no PC-491 personnel records reviewed
- Limitations
- The guide describes NARA holdings and access routes; it does not identify a PC-491 file, establish that responsive records survive, or document asbestos aboard this hull. Specific deck logs, procurement files, repair records, and disposal records were not retrieved in this research pass.
