R. Wilson of Sacramento, CA as fishing boat Lois B.; 1956 by George A. Almand of San Diego; 1962 by Chile-California Corp. of San Diego; out of documentation 1989; fate unknown. Specs: 148 t.; 110'10" x 17' x 6'6"; 15.6 kts; complement 28; 1 x 40mm, 2 x .50cal, 2 Y-guns, 2 DC tracks; 2 x 880bhp GM 8-268A diesels, Snow & Knobstedt single-reduction gear, 2 shafts. - Locator
- ships-sc.html table, SC-497 class block, row 'SC-502 | 1942-44'
- Finding type

- Finding
- The Navy Department's official roster of submarine chasers lists SC-502 in commission during the 1942-44 window, with no Lend-Lease or loss notation - consistent with USN service throughout the war (unlike sisters SC-500, SC-503, SC-506-508, SC-511-517 which carry 'Lend-Lease to France/USSR' notations, and SC-501 which was converted to IX-100 Racer).

[4]CNO, 'U.S. Navy at War, 1941-1945' - official report to the Secretary of the Navy, Appendix C (vessel casualty list), HyperWar transcription; corroborated by uboat.net SC-521 entry [other_primary]

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The official CNO casualty list records 'SC 521 | 11 03 S, 164 50 E | 10 July 1945' - the submarine chaser whose crew this hull rescued. Per uboat.net's SC-521 entry: SC-521 foundered in heavy weather off Santa Cruz, Solomon Islands, at 0852L/11 while en route from Guadalcanal to Pearl Harbor with three other submarine chasers; there was no loss of life - the crew was picked up by USS SC-502 and USS SC-1047, which returned to Guadalcanal together with USS SC-1327. NavSource separately states SC-502 'was cited for its part in rescuing the crew of a sinking SC.'

- Population
- SC-521 crew (~28, rescued); SC-502 crew (~28)
- Limitations
- The loss itself is official (CNO Appendix C); the rescuer attribution - SC-502 picking up the crew - rests on uboat.net's secondary compilation plus NavSource's 'cited for its part' line; no primary action report or commendation was located. uboat.net fixes the time 0852L/11 vs NavSource's 10 July date (zone-date artifact, unresolved). No asbestos content.

- CORRECTION: despite the PC-502 designation this hull was never a PC-461-class 173-foot steel patrol craft. It is an SC-497-class 110-foot wooden-hulled submarine chaser that commissioned under the early-war overlapping patrol-craft numbering as PC-502 on 3 June 1942 and was reclassified SC-502 in July 1942 - one month later. The PC-461 class proper began at hull 461 in steel construction; SC-497-class boats occupied the same PC-4xx/5xx number block only until the July 1942 reclassification sorted them into the SC series.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wooden-hulled, diesel-powered 110-foot submarine chaser built 1941-42 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era, but the plausible onboard inventory is narrow: era-standard small-craft applications were diesel exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. With no boilers and no steam distribution system, the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway that dominates asbestos exposure on steam vessels does not apply to this class.

- Seabrook Yacht construction trades (1941-42); crew (1942-45); shipyard/disposal workers (1945-48)
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, plan, or work package located. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; wooden subchasers of this class plausibly carried far less asbestos than steam combatants, and even the limited applications listed are unverified for this hull. No quantity.

- GAO product page HRD-80-2 Highlights block
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO reviewed the Navy's use of asbestos in ships and its worker-protection efforts: the Navy's 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for repairs, modified in 1979 to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas - documenting that asbestos insulation was present and managed across the Navy fleet through the era covering this hull's construction and service.
