- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestones generally track official records but the Resor item contains two errors vs the primary record: the torpedoing is dated 26 February 1942 (the Eastern Sea Frontier war diary logs it under 27 February 1942; uboat.net logs the attack at 06.36 German time = about 0036 local, 27 February) and 'Sea Girt, DE' is a mislabel - Sea Girt is in New Jersey and the cited position (39 deg 47'N, 73 deg 26'W) is off the NJ coast (see ev-02, ev-05). Contains no asbestos content.

- Finding
- Primary-source documentation of PC-507 in the R.P. Resor response: under February 27, 1942 - 0035: 'Great light and explosion 095 deg T. and about 5 miles from Sea Girt. Vessel torpedoed and afire. Some survivors taken aboard ship's boat to Bradley Beach. Others in PC-507 and Coast Guard. VALPARAISO?' (the diary's tentative identification; the vessel was the tanker R.P. Resor, torpedoed by U-578 - uboat.net logs the attack at 06.36 hours on 27 February at 39 deg 47'N, 73 deg 26'W, complement 50 with 48 dead and 2 survivors, consistent with 'just after midnight' local-time accounts). 0610: 'Inspat reports PC-507 will arrive Tompkinsville at 0640 with two survivors.' 0815: 'Agt. Carmody of Coastal Intelligence reports no survivors on board PC-507.' 0820: 'Coast Guard says survivors were transferred from PC-507 to a Coast Guard Cutter, but as yet this cutter has not returned to its base at Manasquan.' The diary thus places both Resor survivors aboard PC-507 before their transfer to a Coast Guard cutter for the Manasquan landing.

- Limitations
- Digitized transcription of a primary Navy record hosted on a non-government site; content is the war-diary text itself. Reconciles conflicting secondary attributions of the survivor pickup (NavSource credits PC-507; uboat.net's Resor entry credits USCGC CG-4344): the diary shows survivors aboard PC-507 and then transferred to a Coast Guard cutter - PC-507 recovered/carried them, CG-4344 landed them. Micro-detail of who first pulled each man from the water remains secondary-source territory (Bilby & Ziegler name CG-4344 for crewman Forsdal). Resor casualty counts differ across sources (49 or 50 aboard; 2 survivors in all accounts). No asbestos content.

- Finding
- Primary-source documentation of PC-507's anti-submarine patrol employment in the Third Naval District, spring 1942: March appendix lists PC-507 on the Shrewsbury-to-Manasquan-Inlet patrol sector; records a PC-507 sound contact 5 miles N.E. of Sea Girt at 0112 on 6 March (the Larch and Zircon proceeded to the scene); records PC-507 with Icarus, Antietam, Zircon, YPs 189 and 191, and Larch investigating a reported submarine off Rockaway Inlet with negative results; and on 17 March records PC-507 and CG-464 dispatched at 0015 to explosions heard by Army and Coast Guard off Atlantic City, Ocean City and Bethany Beach - PC-507 reported no submarine seen or contacted in the designated area (7 miles S/E of Atlantic City), with subsequent sector assignments Atlantic City to Barnegat, Barnegat Buoy to Atlantic City, Barnegat Buoy to Five Fathom, and Atlantic City to Five Fathom Buoy. April appendix continues PC-507 on the Manasquan-to-Barnegat sector; the April roster lists her among Third Naval District local forces 'actually not assigned to Eastern Sea Frontier.'

- Finding
- The Mathis Yacht Building Co. construction table lists hull #249 as 'SC 507, US Navy, Sub Chaser, 148d, 110 ft, delivery 19-Jan-42, To France 1944 as CH 85' - identifying this hull by the builder's own hull number and confirming the 19 January 1942 delivery/commissioning date and 1944 French transfer as CH-85. The yard narrative documents that Mathis Yacht Building operated at Cooper's Point, Camden, and that the yacht-building operation moved to Gloucester City NJ under John Trumpy & Sons in mid-1942 - after this hull's construction. A second Shipbuilding History table (WWII sub-chasers list) independently gives 'SC-507, Mathis Yachts, Camden NJ, 148, 110, 19 Jan 1942, to Free French 1944 as CH-85.'

- uboat.net's warship entry adds the contract/order date (ordered 14 January 1941) and a five-officer commanding-officer roster, all USNR: William Robert Taylor (19 Jan 1942 - mid/late 1942); Lt. George Washington Cassleman (mid/late 1942 - early 1943); E. D. Ring (early 1943 - mid/late 1943); F. L. Townsley (mid/late 1943 - late 1943); G. A. Doyle (late 1943 - 29 Mar 1944, the transfer). Its merchant entry for R.P. Resor records: completed 1936 by Federal Shipbuilding, Kearny NJ; hit by one torpedo from U-578 at 06.36 hours 27 February 1942 about 20 miles east of Manasquan Inlet NJ at 39 deg 47'N, 73 deg 26'W; complement 50 (48 dead, 2 survivors); cargo 105,025 barrels of Bunker C fuel oil, Baytown TX to Fall River MA; hulk stayed afloat until it capsized and sank about 31 miles east of Barnegat NJ nearly 48 hours after the hit.

The Resor survivor-pickup attribution to USCGC CG-4344 conflicts with NavSource's 'rescued by PC-507' and is reconciled by the ESF war diary (survivors aboard PC-507, transferred to a CG cutter) - see ev-02. Its German-time attack stamp (06.36, 27 Feb) equals ~0036 local on 27 February, making NavSource's '26 February' off by a day. No asbestos content.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wooden-hulled diesel submarine chaser built 1941 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard small-craft applications aboard a boat of this type and period were diesel-exhaust and muffler lagging, engine gaskets and packing, electrical insulation and switchboard panels, and winch brake linings. As a diesel boat with a wooden hull she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but crew worked in a confined 110-foot hull alongside insulated machinery.

No quantity. Wooden-hulled small craft plausibly carried less asbestos tonnage than steel steam vessels of the era - the inference is about product categories, not presence aboard this hull.

- CORRECTION: batch input labeled this hull 'USS PC-507, PC-461 class.' She was never a PC-461-class vessel - the PC-461 class is the 173-foot steel-hulled patrol-craft type. This hull belongs to the SC-497 class, the 110-foot wooden-hulled submarine-chaser series ('splinter fleet') that was ordered and initially commissioned under PC-series numbers (her sister SC-497 was likewise ex-PC-497) and reclassified to SC during the war. For this hull: commissioned USS PC-507 on 19 January 1942, reclassified SC-507 in April 1943 (NavSource; navypedia gives a September 1942 reclassification - variant unresolved, see gaps).
