- NHC service narrative for this hull: 'USS SC-508, a 95-ton 110-foot submarine chaser, was built at Camden, New Jersey. Commissioned in March 1942 as PC-508 and soon renamed SC-508, she conducted initial tests and trials in Chesapeake Bay, then was assigned to the Eastern Sea Frontier with a home yard at Charleston, South Carolina. She subsequently served at the Submarine Chaser Training Center, Miami, Florida, and was assigned to the Eighth Fleet in June 1943 for service in the Mediterranean area. In March 1944, SC-508 was transferred to the French Navy in North Africa under Lend-lease. She was sold to France in March 1949 and served into the 1960s. Her name in the French Navy was initially CH-95, later changed to P 703.' Photographic record: NH 96482 shows SC-508 moored outboard of SC-669 at Charleston Navy Yard, 10 August 1942; 80-G-14662 shows her with 'PC-508' painted on her bow preparing to dock at the Submarine Chaser Training Center, Miami, 11 May 1942.

- Finding
- CORRECTION of the inherited database heading 'USS PC-509 & PC-510 - ex-Yachts (PC-508)': the heading is a parsing artifact of the NavSource index layout, in which the section divider 'PC-509 & PC-510 - ex-Yachts' sits between the 'SC-508 ex-PC-508' row and the 'SC-497 Class - Continued' rows. The real hull is USS SC-508 (ex-PC-508), a Mathis-built 110-foot SC-497-class submarine chaser. PC-509 and PC-510 were completely different vessels - both converted yachts: PC-509 was the yacht Vara (built 1929 by Herreshoff Manufacturing Co., Bristol, RI, for Harold S. Vanderbilt), acquired 7 October 1940, commissioned USS PC-509 on 27 December 1940, and reclassified Coastal Patrol Yacht Valiant (PYc-51) on 15 July 1943; PC-510 was the yacht Sybarita (built 1927 by Consolidated Shipbuilding Corp., Morris Heights, NY), acquired 18 October 1940, commissioned USS PC-510, and reclassified District Patrol Craft YP-105 in September 1941. DANFS confirms the corresponding submarine-chaser numbers were never used: 'SC-509 - Hull numbers not used.' / 'SC-510 - Hull numbers not used.' Record name corrected to USS SC-508; vessel is SC-497 class, not PC-461 class.

- Finding
- A wooden-hulled, diesel-powered 110-foot submarine chaser built in 1941 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era. Era-standard applications on a small diesel craft of this type and period were engine and exhaust-system thermal insulation, machinery gaskets and packing, and electrical insulation in the confined wooden hull volume. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS SC-508 / PC-508 was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried to completion this session - the authenticated helper reported the fleet-wide request budget momentarily spent on every attempt (hourly pace limit, not the daily quota); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. The secondary web sweep surfaced one literal string collision - a 2004 Garlock supplemental interrogatory filing (Newport News Circuit Court consolidated asbestos docket CL90-10000W-01, via toxicdocs.org) in which 'SC-508' appears inside a Garlock product-specification table (Class SC nitrile rubber compounds), not as a vessel reference - classified as a name collision, not qualifying litigation. No 'asbestos aboard SC-508' claims of any kind were located, including in law-firm marketing content.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era inference remains reasonable but unproven, and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (throttled, not run). Deck logs, BuShips work packages, and French-service records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
