NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation that generally tracks official register data - all milestone values here are independently corroborated by the official BuShips Ships' Data register (ev-02). Contains no asbestos or material content. NavSource lists no decommissioning or stricken dates for this hull. The per-engine rating is rendered '2,880bhp' on the page while the official register and class data give 2,880 shp combined (2 x 1,440 bhp) - register figures carried.

    Finding
The official wartime BuShips register lists PC-573 among Patrol Vessels - Submarine Chasers (PC) in service as of the register's effective date: builder Dravo Corp., Pittsburgh, Pa.; laid down 14 October 1941; launched 5 March 1942; commissioned 13 June 1942. Characteristics table entries for this hull: engine manufacturer and model 'H.O.R. R-99DA' (Hooven-Owen-Rentschler), shaft horsepower 2,880, Westinghouse reduction gear, trial displacement 348 tons, trial speed 20.2 knots.

Official register entry confirms builder, dates, engine, and trial figures; contains no material or asbestos content. 348-ton trial displacement and 20.2-knot trial speed are condition-specific figures, not the design displacement (class standard ~284-295 t; full/extreme ~450-463 t across sources). vessel_history
    Finding
Ship-specific primary record: PC-573 was an escort of convoy TAG-20 (Trinidad to Guantanamo) when USS Erie (PG-50), the lead escort, was torpedoed by U-163 off Curacao on 12 November 1942. PC-573's own report (verbatim): 'This vessel proceeded towards Sector 1 to relieve SPRY which stood over to assist ERIE. Between 1710 and 1725 observed ships on starboard bow of convoy firing deck guns to starboard. At 1725 sighted five men in the water, position marked by a flag. Searched area and Sector 3, no contact. The Dutch cruiser lowered a boat to pick up the survivors at 1755. Observed ships in the convoy to fire their deck guns on port bow of the convoy, but could not see their target. At 2010 this vessel fired four [rounds] of star shell, nothing was sighted. Resumed patrol in Sector 5.' Companion reports in the same memo are from PC-624, PC-545, USS Spry, USS Biddle, and the escort commander; HNLMS Van Kinsbergen and Queen Wilhemina (ex-PC-468) also operated with the escort.

    Finding
Official DANFS narrative for USS Erie corroborates the event PC-573's report describes: Erie 'got underway from Port-of-Spain 10 November for Guantanamo Bay, and when 2 days out of Curacao, was torpedoed' (i.e., 12 November 1942); fires and magazine explosions followed; seven killed and 11 wounded; 'Survivors were taken from the water by a Netherlands ship, HMNS Van Kinsbergen.' Erie was towed into Willemstad and capsized/sank there 5 December 1942 during salvage preparations.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
Secondary reconstruction grounded in the HNLMS Van Kinsbergen deck log places PC-573 as one of four escorts of convoy TAG-63 (Trinidad-Aruba-Guantanamo), which sailed from Port of Spain 29 May 1943 - escorts HNLMS Van Kinsbergen (escort commander), HNLMS Queen Wilhemina (ex-PC-468), USS Biddle (DD-151), and USS PC-573 - and notes the same four ships had escorted together through the Caribbean convoy battles including the November 1942 Erie action. The TAG series ran Trinidad-Aruba-Guantanamo August 1942-May 1945. uboat.net's command chronology for this hull lists Gordon Marvin Street, USNR, in command from commissioning (13 Jun 1942) to mid-1943, succeeded by six further USNR officers through late 1945. shipbuildinghistory's production table lists PC-573, Dravo Corp., Pittsburgh, delivered/commissioned 13 June 1942, sold 1948.

    Limitations
The Log Book Project is a researched secondary compilation, not an official record - its load-bearing source is the Van Kinsbergen deck log (Dutch naval archive), which is the archival lead here; PC-573's own deck logs are the unaccessed U.S. counterpart (ev-09). CO chronology is uboat.net secondary data, unverified against primary records. The same article's '10 November 1942' dating of the Erie loss is incorrect - the memo and DANFS fix it at 12 November 1942; the error is not carried.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
A steel-hulled patrol craft built 1941-42 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were machinery and diesel-exhaust insulation/lagging, gaskets, valve and flange packing, electrical insulation, and deck coverings/cement, plus shipyard-applied finishes. As a diesel-propelled vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; the plausible exposure pathways are the engine-room/exhaust systems, machinery gaskets and packing, and construction/repair disturbance of installed materials.

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Published appellate record documents asbestos litigation history for this hull's builder: per stipulated facts recited by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, Dravo Corporation (publicly owned, Pittsburgh-based, heavy industry incl. watercraft manufacture, existing since the late 1880s) faced lawsuits 'beginning in at least the early 1990s' alleging asbestos-related injuries, claims 'typically ... based on allegations of exposure to asbestos during Dravo's operations from the 1940s through the 1980s' - a window covering PC-573's 1941-42 construction at Dravo's Neville Island yard. Hundreds of asbestos claimants asserted claims against Dravo by the July 13, 2020 claim bar date in the dissolution proceeding, and Dravo resolved all timely filed claims (insurance settlement approved July 17, 2020). In the separate veil-piercing consolidation, the Superior Court (307 A.3d 146, 2023) had allowed asbestos plaintiffs to pierce the veil to reach parent Carmeuse Lime (CLI); the Supreme Court reversed, holding veil piercing is not available under the LLC Act for these time-barred claims.

Asbestos claimants alleging exposure during Dravo operations 1940s-1980s (hundreds of claimants); Dravo Neville Island workforce incl. 1941-42 PC construction trades
    Limitations
Litigation-stage discipline: the veil-piercing opinions do not adjudicate exposure - they decide a corporate-recovery question on stipulated facts. The recital that Dravo faced asbestos claims alleging exposure 'during Dravo's operations from the 1940s through the 1980s' is itself a stipulated description of pleadings, not a finding that asbestos exposure occurred at the Neville Island yard specifically (Dravo's operations also included steel mills, chemical plants, and construction/engineering sites). Builder-level, not hull-level: does not establish asbestos aboard this hull, individual exposure, quantity, or legal eligibility. Underlying individual suits against Dravo were resolved under the claim-bar process; outcome detail not public.
