- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates track NVR/DANFS-style records but are not independently adjudicated. The Peleliu '4 September 1944' entry is the convoy sortie date; the ship's war diary (see ev-02) places control-vessel duty on 15-16 September 1944. Disposal-date conflict with the Wikipedia retelling (29 vs 16 November 1946) carried in gaps. The page headers the hull 'PC-497 Class' while NavSource's own index and all other sources place it in the PC-461 class - a labeling variance noted in gaps. Contains no asbestos information whatsoever.

- Finding
- PC-598's war diary is digitized in the National Archives Catalog (354 catalog hits for 'PC-598', predominantly the monthly war-diary file units; series covers 3/5-31/43 through 9/1-30/45). Seven monthly units were read directly, covering all six recorded invasions, the August 1944 crew fatality, and the disposal-period overhaul: August 1944 (NAID 78603112) - escort duty USS Antares (to Guadalcanal 4-7 Aug), USS Hercules and USS Tryon screens, repairs at Carter City; at 0906 on 17 August 1944, anchored Macquitti Bay, Russell Island, 'DIELMAN, Galen R., 629-43-81, SM3c., V6, USNR fatally wounded by shell from beach', a Board of Inquiry convened by ComGroupFive PhibsPac later determining the bullet came from a Marine Combat Range; the same unit documents the PCC conversion work - first station 'as control ship in landing rehearsal' 27 August, control-ship landing rehearsal off Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal 29 August, alongside repair ship USS Tutuilla at Purvis Bay for 'installation additional gear' 30 August and 'installing additional gear for radios' 31 August; September 1944 (NAID 633380801) - sortie 4 September 1944 with Task Unit 32.13 for the Stalemate II Peleliu operation, ceasing screening duty 0530 on 15 September to begin control-vessel duty, acting as guide for LCIs and LVTs to White Beach 2, then at 0905 'took over as control ship for White Beaches 1 and 2', relieved 16 September, screening through 25 September; October 1944 (NAID 78665797) - voyage repairs alongside USS Oglala (ARG-1) 4-11 October, sortie 13 October with TF 78.1 (King II) astern of USS PC-623, entered Leyte Gulf 0030 on 20 October, embarked Transport Division 23's Beachmaster and communication team from USS DuPage 0820, took over control of Red Beach anchored 0900, first wave 1000, then anti-submarine screen; grounded on an 'improperly charted and buoyed' reef 23 October, floated free by ATF-110 with slight screw damage; screened the torpedoed LST-695 straggler group toward Palau 25-26 October; January 1945 (NAID 139860885) - ship 'designated as Senior Control Vessel and carried the flag for control ships' with Capt. S.G. Barchet, USN, Senior Control Officer (CTU 78.1.7) embarked, a floating mine sunk by 20mm and rifle fire 1 January 1945, flagship duties for CTU 78.1.7 on the White Beach line of departure for the 9 January 1945 Lingayen Gulf landings (first wave dispatched 0902); April 1945 (NAID 140000193) - release from screening 0405 on 1 April 1945 (L-Day) to serve as Blue Beach Control Vessel off Okinawa under Lt. Vrooman USNR as control officer, hits claimed on an attacking VAL that crashed into the sea, transition to Purple Beach Control Vessel 5 April, a second VAL engaged 6 April, then TranRon 16 unloading control under Lt. Comdr. Dawes from 9 April; June 1945 (NAID 101747092) - underway with TG 31.25 as part of the amphibious landing force to Iheya Shima (ComPhib Group 4 order A408-45), on assigned station for the amphibious landing 3 June, anti-submarine screening in the area 4-6 June, then underway 0035 on 9 June with landing forces for Aguni Jima assuming assigned station for the amphibious operation 0404; July 1945 (NAID 83571602) - departure Okinawa 24 June via Eniwetok (anchored 5-8 July), arrival Pearl Harbor 1300 on 21 July, reporting 'to ComServForc for major overhaul', moored berth DE-2 21-23 July per ComServForc orders, then berth Baker 8 'undergoing major overhaul' 23-31 July.

- Limitations
- Verification is by direct read of the August 1944, September 1944, October 1944, January 1945, April 1945, June 1945, and July 1945 diary pages; the remaining ~14 monthly units are indexed and digitized but were not individually read this session. The war diary contains no asbestos, material, or insulation information - it is operational history only. The diary says 'major overhaul' without specifying scope; the 'engine overhaul' detail is a secondary retelling. Deck logs ('PC-598 Log Book') and administrative/operational remarks cited in secondary retellings were not separately pulled.

Thirty-five PCs were converted to Patrol Craft - Control (PCC) for amphibious landing operations, with extra personnel accommodations and communications equipment added (weight compensated by equipment removal), four twin-mount 20mm guns replacing singles, and SU radar fitted - the configuration PC-598 carried in 1944-45. PCs were designed for ASW, convoy escort, and coastal patrol, releasing destroyers for trans-Atlantic duty.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A steel-hulled patrol craft built at a commercial yard in 1942 sits inside the documented era of asbestos use in U.S. naval and merchant ship construction. Era-standard applications aboard a 173-ft diesel patrol craft of this type and period were thermal insulation on machinery and exhaust uptakes, gaskets and flange packing, valve packing, electrical insulation, interior fireproofing, and deck coverings. With a diesel plant and no boilers or steam turbines, the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but the small-ship confined-space dynamic concentrates whatever materials were installed into the hull's compact working and berthing spaces.

Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity; no manufacturer attribution. Builder Commercial Iron Works is not in the Atlas shipyard dataset, so no yard-level product documentation exists for this hull.

- Finding
- Program-level documentation that the U.S. Navy used asbestos insulation aboard its vessels across the era covering this hull's 1942 construction and 1943-46 service, and that by the late 1970s the Navy was managing asbestos hazards in ship repair and overhaul (GAO surveyed worker-protection practices at naval shipyards).

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record, or verified litigation naming PC-598/PCC-598 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). A 'PC-598 asbestos' web sweep returned only Michigan probate-court Form PC 598 collisions - no law-firm listicle or vendor page asserts asbestos aboard this hull, an unusually clean negative. CAVEAT: three of four CourtListener base queries completed (both opinion searches returned count 0; the 'PC-598' docket search returned 10 name-collision dockets with zero qualifying cases); the 'PCC-598' RECAP docket query never acquired a fleet pacing token and is logged as blocked, not as a negative finding.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the ship was built and disposed of before any modern survey regime, and her post-1946 commercial (or possible foreign-naval) history is undocumented. Any litigation finding is limited to what the search_ledger reports for this session. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
